Tucking his gun in his holster, Hannibal crouched down a few feet from the girl, âI promise you, weâre the good guys. We wonât let anybody else hurt you.â He spoke softly, eyes never leaving the terrified girlâs face, even for a second, âBut we have to go, right now. Itâs not safe to stay.âÂ
The little girl chewed on her filthy and cracked lip, considering the grey haired maleâs words and his face before sliding out of the corner, âOkay.â She dragged her inquisitive brown eyes over Demetri and then Hannibalâs bloody clothes, âAre they all dead?âÂ
Hannibal nodded, slowly getting reaching out to offer his arms to the child, âEveryone is dead or very close. Which is why we must leave now.â He breathed, trying to keep the urgency from his voice, âCome, weâll get you clean clothes and some food.âÂ
At that the girl bit the bullet and ran into Hannâs outstretched arms, allowing him to pic her up and settle her on his hip with ease, âMâSvetlana.. I prefer Lana though.â She muttered, eyeing Demetri again, âWhoâre you?â
Giving a cursive sweep of the room, deciding that everything there was Darkoâs and definitely not Svetlanaâs, he headed for the bedroom door, âMy name is Hannibal, thatâs Demetrius, we call him Dem. Itâs a pleasure to meet you Lana.â He smiled, pulling his gun as he crossed the threshold of the room and leading the way back up to the ground floor of the house.Â
Just as he was emerging from the staircase with Lana in his arms, Hann had to dart back as two bullets embedded in the wall just inches from his face, chunks of wall spraying on impact and leaving a gash on his cheek from the impact. He cared more for the child in his arms though, making sure she had been protected from the debris before turning to Dem, âGuess we know where the rest of them went, probably took out some of the team and circled back.â
Tabitha curled into Valâs embrace, her arm moving around his neck to keep him as close as possible. She flinched at the first kiss to her face, such tenderness not having been seen in months, it took her a moment to relax again and nod, every inch of her body trembling.
Val stood with Tab, giving Nicolae a nod to go ahead and clear the path of any stragglers, âAlright, lets go home.â He said, stepping over the body with very little regard for it. He stopped, turned, hawked up the biggest amount of spit and phlegm he could muster and spat on Darko, smirking as it landed dead centre of his forehead, âThatâs for Demetrius.â Without another word, he turned and left with Tab. knowing Will wouldnât be far behind.
As soon as they reached the stairs, Tabbyâs hand around Valentinâs neck was reaching back to grip Willâs tank top. Even though her expression was blank, it was clear that the female was simply trying to convince herself this was really happening and not all another elaborate dream.
Shots from the bottom of the stairs had Val stopping, signalling Nicolae to go ahead and try to get a handle on what was happening. As far as those left standing knew, he was still on their side.
Demetrius nodded shortly, vaguely listening to Hannibal as he took in their surroundings, listening intently to everything. Whipping around to his left he took out another man then stowed his gun in his pants cautiously, nodding his agreement, âYeah I think weâre safe now. You get her to the car and Iâll make sure Val gets out safe with Tab and Will then follow.âÂ
He wasnât sure how he felt about the small child in his loverâs arms. She needed help and he could appreciate that but he didnât want Will to get any bright ideas about taking her in. Dem had never wanted children and he didnât think that they fit into their lifestyle. Still though, she was scared and innocent so he attempted to shoot her what he hoped was a reassuring smile, âYouâre okay with the Boss man, honey. He ainât gonna let you get hurt.â
Will pressed himself close to Valentinâs back as they decended the stairs, making sure that he was close enough for Tabitha to touch if that was what she needed. His keen eyes were also darting everywhere though, nervous of danger when they were most vulnerable.
Watching Hannibalââs back he turned to survey the area, getting distracted as he heard footsteps on the stares. He barely had time to lock eyes with Nicu before blood sprayed over him, blossoming from the other manâs neck as his prone body plummeted down the last few steps. Swearing harshly and cursing his own stupidity, Dem went to pull his weapon again but he didnât have the time. His left bicep jerked backwards at what felt like someone hauling off and punching him full power hit it and he fell to hit knees with a grunt. He could hear gunshots vaguely in the distance but his ears were ringing. As the bodyguard turned to look at his arm he saw blood gushing from a hole in the flesh and as soon as he acknowledged the injury white hot pain shot through his body. Letting out a roar of pure agony he surged to his feet, adrenaline kicking in as he drew his weapon and took on the four men approaching.
âJESUS FUCKING CHRIST!â He roared, barely able to hold them back and suddenly finding he was the last man standing, âVal, you get your sweet ass outa that door, Iâll be right behind you.â He growled, barrelling towards Darkoâs men and hoping Valentin had enough sense to take advantage of the distraction,
