Why do you draw unicorns with like round horns? (I think they're very cute. Hope I don't sound rude I'm just wondering)
i answered this forever ago but im happy to ‘reawnser it’ with an update to me explaining it with more/better examples
so i have a few diff styles of horns i do typically
but their suppose to be hereditary or whatever
Unicorns with horns that are more jagged and curl and sometimes have little spikes on their outward side like this?
is called the ‘sun’s curl’ style horn. it is seen typically in Unicorns who ancestry belongs to ‘the house of the sun’ which lemme dip into my headcanon stuff real fast. back in old equestria there used to be a good handful of alicorns and they were treated much more like deities. they had ‘houses’ where families of ponies would pay patreon to live under the protection and guidance of one of the alicorns. ponies who lived under an alicorn house often changed their names to contain, for example in the home of the sun, to have sun in it as a representation of being of the family of Celestia. some ponies would court celestia or her kin which is how the trait passed out over generations.
the houses are no longer a thing but the ancestry of the houses still is visibly around via genetics. Unicorns will have their curled spikey horns that are rough and warm to the touch. Often having white or darker spots on their coats called ‘sunspots’
and this doesn't just apply to just Unicorns as other races of ponies patreoned the House of the sun.
Earth ponies are adorned with warmer coat colors, the spots and unlike typical earth ponies will have lighter hoof colors opposed to the natural dark colored hooves
applejack and their family are a big branch of earth ponies who patreon the sun. in general a lot of earth ponies and unicorns typically went to Celestia. For earth ponies it was to seek being in good favors with celestia to they may have good sunshine and weather for harvest and Unicorn it was to share and expand their abilities in magic.
Pegasus were less common but happen, giving pegasus more colorful manes and wings tips, a trait considered attractive in pegasus culture. Their bodies will be typically speckled in colored feathers laced through their pelts. and then the typical white spots, which pegasus carried white underbellies a lot more in old equestria but only became more prominent in pegasus in the house of sun
then theirs ‘Moon’s Curl’ horn
much like celestia, these horns stem from the ponies who payed patreon to Luna in the House of moon.
they have lot horns that curl into a crescent shape, their horns are velvety and soft.
Most of Luna’s house consisted of Unicorns who sought to learn magic from the younger sister who was experienced in transmogrification and dreams and other magics her sister lacked in.
The other majority were ‘pegasus’ who upon pledging themselves to Luna were typically granted to blessing in the form of being changed into that of bat ponies adorn with bat wings like Luna’s own wings and long curved sharp canines.
the wings stuck to just pegasus, but the teeth trait and horn were passed around from the group of bat ponies Luna made.
After Luna’s banishment Bat ponies became untrusted and believed to be under her influence and would attack innocent ponies. none of this was true and only based in fear mongering. However this lead to the endangerment of Bat ponies as a species and what was left of them went into hiding long ago.
there are a small handful who have returned with Luna’s own return to the castle to once again serve under her but the majority of Bat ponies are still hidden and all Bat ponies are sworn to a secrecy on their location.
A horn type that wasn’t based from any house but simply of the crystal empire. Amore was popularly said to be one of the first ponies who have had the trait long ago, this fact isnt true as she was just the first/most popular documented case of it. lots of ponies of the crystal empire (including sombra) had horns that had gradients.
these gradients typical go from the body type color to a more saturated color, the other more common trait is it fading to a lighter color. More uncommon is for the horn to fade into a totally different color.
This trait has spread to more than just the horn on other ponies as the first layer of feathers before the tips will have a gradient, or ponies legs or tails. It was just a trait that commonly appeared on the unicorns horn.
the one special thing branch of Amore’s Dip is ‘Amore’s crest’. this trait is what made Amore so unique and loved for her horn, as despite being only a unicorn she has soft feather tuft at the top of her horn that ponies adored.
the trait has mostly vanished but Cadance has it and so did her mother, a true marking of her heritage to the Crystal empire.
there are other types of horns in equestria to
some are left over remains of long forgot alicornian houses, some like the crystal empire are was just developed from a large community (such as mistmanes horn as well at sweetie and rarity who i have that share her horn type) these horns are typically more ‘uncommon’ compared to the sun curl, moon curl or Amore dip but enough of them that you will probably meat a unicorn like this once in your life.
since she is the main character she gets a special horn
her horn looks like your typical unicorn horn, long straight sharp point. what makes her horn special is that there are grooves on it with bright pink color in them. the colors glow when she uses her magic. currently there are no other ponies in equestria known to have had a horn like this, no one in twilights family has horns like this, as her family has typically had the moon’s curl style horn.
