Extremely random ramblings about height and posture. Yes, I have to much time in my hands.
Ok, so this photo obviously doesn’t show their real height differences very well but it’s a prime example of each of their posture and what that does to how they’re perceived size-wise.
Look at Freddie, he’s very slim and leggy and actually a couple of cms shorter than Roger but the way he stands, pulling his legs up from his knees and thighs and with his chest up (a very dancer thing to do, actually :) ), makes him look taller. Also, he has relatively wide and strong shoulders and that makes him appear bigger than what he actually is.
Roger, who is the taller of the two has often been said to have that small, slight look about him, and that’s to do with posture. He naturally has a relaxed posture, he’s not actively pulling himself up but just lets his body do its thing. He tends to stand with his knees soft, and he has that little round shouldered thing going, probably because all that drumming. Also, compare him and Fred, see how much wider Fred is at the shoulders. That’s why Roger is perceived as the smaller one, though in height it’s the other way around.
Brian is a classic case of a tall kid trying to fit in with his shorter friends. He most likely shot up like a weed when he was in his teens and grew those mile long legs, and feeling self-conscious tried to hide it and began to hunch down. His frame is generally wider at the hips and shoulders and bigger than the other three, but especially in the 70s he was really really lanky and sparsely built so despite his height he appeared very willowy. His natural pose is to stand either legs apart and hands on his hips with head and shoulders bent forward, or hips pushed forward and shoulders hunched, basically like he’s playing the guitar.
John… well… he’s doing his sassy hips thing and looks tiny, but he is taller than both Freddie and Roger. He has similar build as Freddie, slim hipped and wide shouldered but whereas Freddie was super slim in the 70s and only got more muscular later in life John always had that lean, wiry muscle definition and a wholesome athletic look. Which he managed to hide most of the time by standing like a noodle.
