Harvey was born in a sunny day of August to a couple of dreamers in New Orleans. His father, Danilo Manalo had come from Manila, Philippines looking for his chance to a better life. Sarah Williams, a legal secretary, had travelled from Canada to USA to study and stayed in the land of dreams. The two met at the bar where Danilo worked and eventually bought, in the French Quarter. It was a whirlwind romance that ended in marriage six months later, and within a year, they were welcoming a baby boy.
Harvey had everything he always needed. Growing up, there wasn’t much but it was enough and love and affection was never lacking. His dad worked odd hours but it allowed the family to cherish every moment and tradition together. When he was four years old, William was born and the family of four became even tighter. Everything was perfect in Harvey’s eyes and he was sure he had te best family in the world.
Ever since he was a child, Harvey could be found carrying a camera and filming every moment of his life. From making little videos to journaling in a video form, he knew he had found his passion and worked through his teenage years to get in the best film school of the country. Against all odds and even against his father’s wishes (and fears), Harvey opened an offer letter from UCLA. He was thrilled and excited, couldn’t wait to graduate high school and move to Los Angeles. The unexpected came the week before his graduation. Both his parents were working late at his father’s bar when a drunk driver lost control of his car and drove inside the bar, killing Mr. Manalo and leaving his wife in critical condition at the hospital. Sarah would pass away a week later from brain surgery complications. Already 18 years old, Harvey became his brother’s legal guardian and while he was just a kid, he took upon himself to not let the tragedy break their family. He declined his offer at UCLA and went to Tulane instead, working part-time at campus to help William. It was hard but it all worked out. Harvey graduated top of his class four years later and William went to NYU. After his brother moved out, Harvey started interning at a film set in New Orleans as an assistant but somehow, it wasn’t what he thought he wanted. For a couple of years, he was a bit lost and thought his passion for film and production was just that - a passion and not a career. Without anyone or anything keeping him in NOLA, Harvey moved to LA once the movie he was working on wrapped up.
In LA, life was even harder. He worked multiple minor jobs to support himself and he was ready to say quits and come back home when an opportunity landed on his lap. Working on a television studio was much more his speed and quickly Harvey climbed the ladder and become a producer’s assistant. That’s when he met Felicity Reddy, a driven young woman that shared the same interests and ambitions as him. They began a relationship and Harvey knew he had met the love of his life, someone to share his life with like his parents had had. And while he was good at his job, after eight years working in the industry, Harvey didn’t get the promotion he had been promised years before. So when Felicity got them a job at her hometown, with the prospect of settling in and having their own family, he agreed. A couple of months later, he proposed, sure that this new life was exactly what they needed.
The idea was the traditional get married and have kids kind of life but after a year of planning the wedding, Harvey and Felicity decided to start trying. Whatever happens, happens. Except it didn’t happen and so they focused on planning the wedding instead. Once they let their guard down, Felicity discovered she was pregnant. Harvey couldn’t have been more happy. He was going to be a father and they would be able to start their own traditions as a family, honoring his parents with a new baby in the family. He had a life full of plans but fate had another. Felicity started experiencing abdominal pain and a quick trip to the ER became their worst nightmare. She was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, having to be rushed to surgery to save her life. A few excruciating hours after, Harvey was told the pregnancy would’ve never been viable and they had to remove one of her fallopian tubes which would make it very hard, if not impossible, to conceive on natural terms ever again.
Harvey tried to be supportive for his fiancée, knowing that his pain could never be as big as hers. But deep down, he was crushed. Their dreams of having a family had been taken away faster than they could have imagined. The couple is still engaged but anytime Harvey tries to talk about the wedding, there is a change of subject and he is not sure of what else he can do. He loves Felicity with his whole heart and it pains him knowing she is still hurting almost a year later. It’s like they’re stuck in this limbo and he is terrified of losing balance and losing the one person that means the world to him.
