Third base is me telling you about my father
Limes
I like my body best when it is tangled with yours
my mother’s quilt, a woven basket, three limes
the button on your shirt taps the bruise on my left thigh
softly, like a question.
In fourth grade I built a bridge out of popsicle sticks
one side of the garden to the other
twisted ankle, salt water on crushed green
it could not hold my weight
cut open the lime, suck on the flesh
your shirt thrown in the basket
I do not know how to answer so I close my eyes and listen.
a gentle rain soaks round shapes into the patchwork,
my grandma’s tattered blanket, my sister’s easter dress
my first kiss was with Billy by the dumpster
he told me I was beautiful so I let him touch my shoulders,
grip my wrists
white hot marks for two days
tongue on my teeth, sour
like limes
your curly hair lies flat against your cheek
here is the church, here is the steeple
here are your hands clasped around my neck
I never learned exactly what a prayer is
spit out the seeds,
chew the meat
and swallow.
