So this is the mystery thatās been boggling me: Why is Jannequinard de Durendaire a viscount (as numerous NPCs constantly remind us?)
It would make sense if the Count de Durendaireās eldest son received the courtesy title of Viscount, but Jannequinard is the second son. ?????
I decided to delve into this mystery and related questions about the Ishgardian nobility. My take on the situation is under the cut (with minor spoilers for various Heavensward quests, but no big story spoilers.)
This old post got a few reblogs recently, so if you are right now out there wondering WTF viscount, you might be interested inĀ āTitles, Names, and Forms of Addressā, a lore compilation I did subsequently!
The Tumblr post with it is here for ease of reblogginā.
Also, given that the above post is old, thereās some obviated lore (I wrote it before Encyclopedia Eorzea I came out, I believe). Itās since become clear that Grinnaux is a nephew of the current Count de Dzemael, for example, and I think Baron Thievenaux has been retconned.
Ā Some say 13 is a number of bad luck, and after struggling to get this moonās publication out the door, Iām inclined to start believing it. I wonāt bore you with the details, but rest assured we have fixed what needs to be fixed and will continue on as we have for the past 13 moons, albeit perhaps a sun later than normal. Iāve been told itās fashionable to be late, but I feel a need to apologise a couple of dozen times before I feel completely comfortable again though my staff will roll their eyes so vigorously if I do that I fear they might lose balance. Instead, Iām going to do some mysterious foreshadowing by saying we might have something extra in the works to make up for it, something special. Until then, I hope you enjoy this issue as much as the others, and have a good sun!

Comments:
Rosaire OWNS and uses many many of these things, like āhair productā and āteaā, but he carries little with him, since he rarely strays that far from his well-appointed home.
1Rosaire, who in fashion is a conservative Ishgardian, may have a different idea of ācasual clothesā than some other Eorzeans.
World Visitās here! Iām working on preparing the next Cathedral Chats and the promised Growersā Conference for Greening Coerthas as planned (hopefully both in May, maybe late), and I look forward to minglinā with all you Crystal folk.
I do have a depressing confession to make, though.
For quite some time now -- maybe as early as 4.1, though maybe even with portents in late Heavensward -- Iāve not been feeling great about the direction FFXIV is turning, while at the same time I was struggling to sustain RP though 2018. I was expecting that the Starlight Feast in Ala Mhigo would be my last event and that Iād wind down Greening Coerthas after that. However, the announcement of Ishgard reconstruction and farming at November FanFest re-energized me, and I was excited for Shadowbringers.
Since then, all the news has been bad, and now the trends look even worse than I had been fearing before. Having taken the past few months to brood and reflect, Iām pretty sure now that FFXIV is becoming -- perhaps has already become -- a game that isnāt enjoyable for me. Aesthetics, story, lore, progression have all drifted away from what attracted me to the game back in 2.5. Doesnāt mean I think theyāre now bad -- I know my preferences will put me in a teeny minority of the players for any game -- but theyāre not for me, to the point that the little niche my tiny minority enjoyed doesnāt really exist anymore.
Iām so heartbroken. I loved this game. Iām grieving the loss heavily.
Iām not quite quitting, though. I still plan to get and play the beginning of Shadowbringers -- solely for Ishgard reconstruction and farming, hah -- and then probably at the end of 2019 evaluate if I should continue. So, like I mentioned: Cathedral Chats and the Growersā Conference will still happen (though I may reduce the number of planned Chats to give myself less stress and workload), and my characters will still be around to RP with. And Iād love to meet ānā chat with all of you, including new people from Crystal! Every time I take a character out for a spin it makes me really happy. But Iām not sure I can in good conscience commit to long-term plot arcs anymore, nor is it really practicable for me to be deep in event-running when a lot of days I canāt even log in without dread and disappointment.
My heart is heavy, and Iāll be grieving for a long time. But, having gotten a head start on that grieving process, I can also look back at some of the memories with joy and pride. (Such pride! I think Iāve done some of my lifeās best writing so far for Rosaire.) What a wonderful time itās been. I only wish it could be longer -- and perhaps it could still be, if the course of the game changes someday in the future and the things that once drew me in come back.
But for now I plan to pull back and put more energy into work, art, and other RP. You can still reach me by Tumblr and by Discord (send me a Tumblr message if youād like to be Discord friends!) to arrange RP or just say hello! I also expect to continue maintaining my lore compilations at least through the end of this year, and I plan to keep them up forever, so donāt worry about those disappearing.
Thank you for being great RP partners, friends, and neighbors. Even if it ends up shorter than I could wish, our time togetherās been an incredible, splendid gift.

Well, this is a special one. Twelve moons ago Qātalhdi, Yādhin and I begun this little publication with just the small, naive hope of spreading grand tales, lost stories and new legends to the rest of Eorzea. And every moon since, weāve done our best, beside the many contributors weāve had the great pleasure of meeting along the way, to make good on that dream. And what a dream itās been, not just because (if I may be so bold) itās quite the accomplishment, but because itās brought us all of you, dear readers. And to thank you, weāve made this issue a little special and will be running an event to celebrate Warkās first anniversary. Our first full year of publication! May we have many more together in the future.Ā

A really interesting prompt for ranking characters by an attribute meme!
In some sense, Rosaire would be the best at apologizing. He is eloquent, skillful at expressing empathy and soothing feelings with understanding and humble words. And itās because heās a silver-tongued manipulator whoās cultivated the skill of āapologizingā as a means to an end. He will, most likely, never apologize sincerely for anything, because in his mind heās always right. (Heās improving, but weāre still working our way from āearth-shatteringly enormous hubrisā to āmassively inflated arroganceā, so itāll be a bit.)
As far as apologies that are sincere and well-expressed, Iād say:
Gentle Valroitās problem is more likely to be apologizing when he wasnāt in the wrong.
Kharadai has the easiest time admitting he was or did wrong, and easily apologizes without resentment. But he might be a little flat and direct, as if expecting the same dispassion from the other person, so it may not go over as well.
Denisot is quite proud, but he knows how to apologize to placate a client, and if realized he was really in the wrong, heād be mortified and want to make amends.
Mrhaelās a bit gruff and holds grudges, but heād apologize if he though the other person would take it well and they could then drop it.
Hyacinthe is the best, Iām pretty sure, even if heās massively out of practice and has Feelings and Issues surrounding it. Heās actually been trained! The rest havenāt and are waay behind him in a cluster of amateurs:
Rosaireās an amateur, but not totally terrible. He has some musical training, but not in voice.
Valroit probably isnāt completely terrible, but definitely an amateur.
Denisot has no training at all but isnāt awful either.
Kharadai has some training in singing as part of ritual practices, but he doesnāt like to draw attention, so he hasnāt practiced much.
Mrhael is probably just bad.
Cooking:
Denisot, obviously, as an actual Ishgardian master culinarian. The rest are at best home cooks:
Kharadai is competent with simple Xaela cooking.
Mrhael is on the road a lot but has learned how to make camp food pretty decent.
Valroit is around a stereotypical ābachelorā or āundergrad studentā skill level (you know āYou know how it is with spaghettiā meme? thatās canonically Valroit) but has been improving since marriage. Yes, he married into a noble house and so doesnāt have to cook, but Perrine has an interest in cooking so they practice together.
Rosaire can boil things in a pot (but hasnāt in about 25 years). That said, he loves to eat food, so his food knowledge would give him an advantage if he ever ends up in the kitchen again.
Hyacinthe can boil things in a pot, but without that advantage.

Thank you so much to those who came by Cathedral Chats tonight!!! I hope it gave your character some interesting tidbits to think about, and I hope you had a good time despite my slowness and general disorganization!
Iāll be editing and posting up a log of the event in the next few days, grouping questions and answers together and trimming out chatter. If you would like to be omitted from the public log for any reason, please just let me know and Iāll make it happen!
Our hope is that next Chat will be after World Visit so that anyone from Crystal can come by, so itāll be at least 1.5 months, maybe longer.
... also, if anyone has a screenshot from event and would like to donate it to me I would deeply appreciate it because I took a metric zero of them. because thats what I always do.
