every facet of dean’s personality makes dean who he is.

the snark, cut-the-bs-no-nonsense attitude and his extreme gentleness. his bad boy persona he wears like a flashing neon sign pointing at himself and screaming i dare you to judge me, to underestimate me, to try to dismiss me. and then he pounces. it’s dean when he is empathic and sympathetic, when he is brutally honest and when he’s a diplomat. when he is sad or tired or happy.

he’s dean when he doesn’t care for what’s expected in good company, but will treat the same way a deity or an inmate. when he knows that he is smart and that he’s good at what he does,  but he won’t use it to boss others around. when he allows doubts and admits he was wrong. it’s dean when he lies and when he tells the truth and when he mixes them. it’s dean when he makes mistakes and those mistakes are part of who dean is. it’s dean when he forgives and it’s dean when he holds grudges and won’t trust easily anymore and it’s dean when he brings with himself all his past and history. it’s dean when he apologizes both because it was earned and because he needs to get people off his back. and this brings me to the  way dean can read people and situations, to the innate sensibility he has for strategy, to the emotional ability to cut to the core of an issue. it’s still dean when he is wrong and it’s dean when he is right or in the middle.

it’s dean when he drinks and when he listens to music, when he enjoys himself with simple pleasurable things like food and sex and he grabs fleeting happiness wherever he can. it’s dean, when he fights and when he’s angry and when he is hurt and quiet and lonely. it’s dean when he wants to be left alone. it’s dean when he needs time to work through his feelings and it’s dean when he says, this is enough, this is not okay. 

it’s dean when he cries. when he is broken, when he is tragically doomed. it’s dean when he despairs and when he makes a stand. when he wants to live and when he wants to die. it’s dean when he survives and adapts to terrible situations, and it’s dean when he just can’t anymore and is ready to give up. 

all of it, and much more, is part of dean and each part has a purpose and each part is vital to who dean is.

okay but au where dean and cas are having a friends with benefits thing going on with absolutely no strings attached nope none at all until dean sees this hickey on cas’ hip that he 100% did not leave and just the thought of cas being with someone else is breaking his heart and all and he tries to pretend he doesn’t notice the hickey when cas stretches or whatever but he’s going somewhat crazy trying to avoid his feelings for his totally platonic friend so he ends up blurting out how he feels and poor cas is holding a jar of tomato sauce in their kitchen and trying to say something but dean goes off on a tangent about how he can’t continue this friends with benefits thing when there’s no way cas likes him back and when he finally finishes and looks at cas, cas is grinning like an idiot and says “the bruise is from when i walked into the table but yes i like you too”

i’ve made like four text posts about this already but i really need everyone to understand that when cas got caught talking to dean on the phone and said he wanted to see him, “the sooner the better,” dean was a little confused and a little suspicious. but he wasn’t resoundingly confused and suspicious. meaning dean acknowledged this kind of statement is somewhere within the realm of possibility, just not directly in the center. the implications of the way that scene played out are… really soft
