Three days before the Friday, October 9 debut of Madam Butterfly, which kicks off Hawaii Opera Theatre’s 2014-2015 season, artistic director Henry Akina is surprisingly calm—though his room betrays his demeanor, with papers and notes scattered over the desk and floor. Pausing from his day to talk about his creative direction of the famous Puccinni opera, he seems confident. In fact, “I think it’s the prettiest Butterfly I’ve been involved with,” he says. “The way the costumes and the set work together is really, really special,” says Akina.
