The Unicode Consortium, the group that governs the emoji standard, proposed an update on Tuesday that addresses emoji racial diversity.
Unicode 8.0 (still in draft form and not yet available) will add five symbol modifier characters, which anyone will be able to use to generate a range of skin tones on their human-like emoji. Unicode noted that the six available skin tones are based on the dermatological standard Fitzpatrick scale.
