It's absolutely Chrissy. Hear me out.
They're both truly awful deaths, and they impact specific characters and the narrative in general.
Bob was sweet and lovely and so so good for Joyce and the boys. But this is Stranger Things and something's gotta give; nobody gets nice things for long. And you could see his death coming. It's such a classic trope – they're all nearly safe, but the last in line gets it; and he's killed horribly in front of the woman he loves. And not to make light of the scene – it is still awful and emotional – but being gored by a supernatural being is kind of ST's jam.
Bob's death does of course have an impact on characters. The Byers have been through A LOT (that part sucks the most; they do love to pile on the trauma), and Bob was a fan favourite. But, to be glib, they needed to make way for Jopper, which was always clearly end game.
Chrissy, however, was a surprise. Yes, you knew something was gonna happen. The hallucinations, the rising tension; she's an innocent, just like Bob, deeply traumatised and hurting, and we're given a sweet little meet cute in the forest and the possibility of help. Again, like Bob nearly escaping, you think there's an out – she's being offered help in the form of Eddie – but there's a narrative and it needs to progress, so into the fridge with you, little lady.
Her death wasn't one we'd seen before. This sweet innocent girl was broken and destroyed from the inside out by an unknown force even to the audience. This isn't a demo or the mind flayer or like anything else we've seen. And the death itself reminded me that I was watching, at its core, a horror – it was brutal and gross and awful to watch. For me, it was truly a suprise death, and visually executed (ha!) so well. And sure, because it's ST, it also had the added trauma of showing her inner psychological torture too.
Chrissy's death haunts the entire narrative. Hers was the first in Vecna's master plan. Her trauma was the key to unlocking the connection between them all. Her death, and the fact that Eddie couldn't (or in his eyes, didn't) help her, affected him so much – he was terrified. It's a huge factor in him deciding to throw himself into the fight, because he ran when she died and he needed to step up, and he in fact dedicated his final stand to her. She is still on his mind to the end – make him pay, Chrissy this is for you, I didn't run away this time.
And that's why Chrissy's death is the "best".
Thank you for coming to my DEAD TED Talk.
