Hayden Kristal

Hayden Kristal is a Deaf, bisexual, transgender, Jewish, senior at the University of Missouri - Columbia where he works as a TA for the American Sign Language department. Living his life at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities has led him to a career as a professional public speaker focusing on the intersections of disability and sexuality, particularly within the spheres of activism and social justice.

I had an amazing time at the Philly Trans Health Conference. Workshop went great, and I had the privilege of meeting some other Deaf trans people for the first time in my life! 

I am so inspired by the people that I met and their commitment to change and the community. I have been feeling the weight of crabs lately, as well as the weight of violence and discrimination against the LGBTQ and Deaf communities. Getting to meet with this intergenerational group of Deaf trans men and women from all different backgrounds was so healing and refreshing - I am so beyond grateful to have had this experience. 

I am also grateful to all the amazing hearing trans people I met this weekend, especially the almost 200 people who came to see GaySL! Thank you SO much for sharing your time with me! If you have feedback for me or just want to say hi, please feel free to drop me a line here! <3

It’s late in night for me and this is awkward so is gonna quickly say that some of these signs are incorrect. I am deaf queer bi/pan trans person who is native ASL signer.

Transgender and Bi in gifs are not correct. We don’t even sign Bi like that. We just spell “b-i”. That sign with ‘b’ on chin looks like people are saying “bitch i” That’s why we deaf bi people don’t like that sign.

Transgender in the illustration is correct but gif one is off. I appreciate you taking time to make these gifs.

Also a Deaf bisexual transgender man/ASL teacher and I lecture about this topic… Be careful using that sign for QUEER. In many places it means FAG, particularly in the south. I’ve seen BI off the face but I don’t like the implication of STRAIGHT.

Never saw “bisexual” signed that way. Could be a dialect thing. As someone said above, I only saw B-I. As for “queer” when I grew up in Maine, that was the sign for gay. In high school or something like that I was told its offensive to sign that way and I was shown the sign as depicted in the gay gif. As for the rest yeah.

I can officially announce that I will be speaking at MBLGTACC 2016 at Purdue University, my THIRD (!) MBLGTACC in a row! I have also been invited to speak at the 2016 LGBT Suicide Risk and Prevention Conference in North Carolina this summer, which is such a tremendous honor. My booked conferences for this upcoming semester (so far) are: MBLGTACC 2016, Feb 19-21 at Purdue University Asterisk Trans Conference, Feb 26-27 at UC Riverside LGBT* in the South, March 18-20 in Asheville, NC I look forward to seeing some of you there, and if you'd like to book me for a speaking engagement this spring semester please contact me to confirm your dates ASAP!
