It has taken 1435 days to finalize our daughterâs adoption.
From the day we first met Vanessa on October 4, 2012 to today, September 8, 2016 we have been slowly plotting our course toward the culminating event of appearing before a local judge who will legally proclaim Vanessa Selah Fleurigene Steen our forever daughter.Â
When I think back to those early moments when we first fell in love with our daughter Vanessa, I am most grateful to the point of tears for the people who have been cheering us on.
For Maison Orphanage and For His Glory, and all of the nannies whose efforts brought shelter and safety for our sweet Vanessa and so many others in the aftermath of the massive earthquake in 2010.
For Christy Guenther, whose timely Facebook message met us in the exact moment of our need...and your providing us with a deep well of information that we needed for bringing this adoption to closureÂ
For Tony and Kari Potthoff, whose bold advocacy and sacrificial love for Vanessa preceded our own. You saved her life...and ours. We are forever in debt to you and your sweet family.Â
For Shriners Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky for your generous medical care. Your provision has allowed Vanessa to successfully play 3 seasons of soccer, 3 seasons of softball, 1 season of baseball (only girl in the league), 4 seasons of basketball (scoring championship winning basket one year), 2 seasons of track throwing discus and shot put and eagerly preparing to play lacrosse this year.Â
For Kelly Chambley, who called us and courageously brokered those first phone calls with Vanessaâs host parents in Arizona.Â
For Jessica Fischer who sensed and shared that this beautiful girl might be the one God has set aside for our family.Â
For Greg and April Seymour who were adoption pioneers in my mind as they initiated their own adoption process long before we were ready.Â
For Eddie and Carly Hilger and so many other amazing couples from Lookout Mountain Presbyterian whose adoption stories left me drenched in tears as you shared your story for a stewardship film I was directing. Your stories answered any questions I might have had.Â
For Bethany Christian Services for hosting a dinner for prospective adoptive families where we were able to hear from couples who were already in a process and matched with children.Â
For David and Kelsey Burke whose family became a safe place for us to be vulnerable. How can we even capture the length that you have gone to love our kids? Your hospitality provided respite and refuge from a number of storms...and your departure has allowed us to take new risks in friendships. Your absence is felt...but even more than that...your presence remains.Â
For Lifeline who willingly entered into the confusion of negotiating the wisest way forward.Â
For Abba Fund, Sonscope and Lifespring whose generous and timely grants made a way even possible.Â
For our immigration attorney, Christine Poarch, whose wisdom and clarity were critical to moving forward with competence and confidence.Â
For our local adoption attorney, Mike Jennings, whose clear head and patience have been such a marvelous gift.
For Janet Jenkins, our adoption social worker from Holsten Homes, whose enthusiasm made all the difference as we negotiated our way through two home study processes together.Â
To Victoria Davidson, whose wise counsel and tender care for our children brought well timed wisdom to how to love every child well in such a special sort of transition. Your insight and experience of Haitian culture helped to set our parental hearts at ease.Â
For our families both near and far who have consistently taken such beautiful risks to be the kind of siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins that love every member of our family no matter what the circumstance presents. Vanessa is ours and we are hers, forever.Â
For my friend and comrade, Russell Courtney whose companionship has been a sustaining force in my life as we enter into hidden and quiet places with people...you have been a safe place for me to be myself and rest in my identity as Godâs beloved. You have worn your own belovedness well and have invited my own to come out and play.Â
For my friend Tony Souder whose friendship has been a high tower and a safe place for savoring steak and Jesus for all they are worth...you show me what trusting God looks like.Â
For our church at Signal Mountain Presbyterian whose affection we are forever indebtedâŠyou received our girl with an uncommon generosity and baptized her as a covenant child. You have been the hands and feet of Jesus welcoming in the stranger, with smiles, gentle hugs, curious questions, intentional pursuit, gracious patience, and humorâŠdid I mention humorâŠher #1 love language.Â
For our Saturday night church communityâŠall of youâŠevery single one of youâŠnd all of your kidsâŠits like a mini United Nations in the pool and on the great lawn as we continue to gather and give thanks for how we are knit together from every tribe, tongue and nation. Itâs a beautiful image of the Gospel at large in our midst. The splashing, sliding, standing and sitting around make for such a beautiful space for family to formâŠfor hearts to feel safeâŠfor souls to feel settled.Â
To our Ten4 Couples Group, you have been an anchor of encouragement as we have needed a place to be ourselves with people who have known us the longest. You have invited us to come out of hiding and to risk being brutally honest. You have been such a curious bunch...listening and praying for us as we move through wherever season we are in. You have given us yourselves and allowed us plenty of room to wrestle through new opportunities and old ones.Â
To my wife, Ruth Ann, whose depth of heart for the hurting leads our family and brings us into places of beauty and brokenness. I like to think that I live out on the edge when in fact, I like to play it safe. You in my lifeâŠhas been Godâs invitation for me to leave the shoreline and swim out into the deepâŠto leave the known behind and take this risk with you. Who would I be without you in my lifeâŠI would be terribly lonely and safeâŠwhich is actually not safe at all. I would not know this kind of trustâŠI would be content hanging out where my toes can touch. And here we are just 1435 days later and we will see this vision become reality. Our daughter will become what we already know her to beâŠour forever daughter. Every birth has taken its toll on your body and soulâŠand in this season I am grateful to see that your soul is restoring. Your recovery of self and soul are a lighthouse for meâŠas I have wandered in darkness and not know the wayâŠyou have shown me how to grow more comfortable with learning how to walk in the dark. You have pushed into places of pain and emerged with an even stronger voice and a tenderness that is a gift to our family. When we stood face to face 20 years ago and make our covenant vows, we were so youngâŠso naiveâŠjust kidsâŠand yet we have witnessed Godâs enduring kindness as we have found a way forward in seasons of uncertainty. And we have not traveled here alone. You took on the primary work of cultivating our communityâŠof being the kind of friend you would want to haveâŠand I am beside myself that I am included in that Hall of Fame level A-list roster of friends. You are mine and I am yours. We are each otherâs forever family.Â
To Sam, my first child. You my son have demonstrated a willingness to set aside position and make room for your sister to step out in front. Your gentle way with Vanessa makes me so proud of youâŠto know that she is being treated with such an enduring sense of kindness. Your willingness to share your friends and allow her to find her own way apart from you only echoes your depth of character and servant heart. In the last 1435 days, I have witnessed you settle in as a leader who can lead from behind and among. So many will run for the platform to grab the mic and win an audienceâŠbut I witness you lighting your single candle in the midst of darkness and you are light there. Jesus has gripped you with such a sweet and genuine love for people.Â
To Sadie, my littlest. You, my love, are my teacher. You have such a sweet heart and it is such a gift to see you using it in so many beautiful ways. I have watched you for 1435 days as you have offered love without requiring a return. You have been yourself, bringing laughter and art and letters and gifts and ideas and stories into our lives in moments when we really needed them. Your depth of soul has been a special treasure that I desire to protectâŠand seeing you speak up and grow in strength, wisdom and humility has been my greatest delight. In moments of weakness you have taken the risk to pursue being vulnerableâŠeven when you did not necessarily know how or want to. You have been advocate for your own heart which has been a catalyst for caring so much for the hearts of others.Â
And finallyâŠ.To my beautiful Vanessa, whose courage I so desperately envyâŠwhose soul I treasure. I hope you will know you are worth fighting for. I love everything about you and am grateful that I get to be your dad. In the first five minutes of meeting you called me âDaddy.â I know those moments must have been scary ones as you were preparing your own heart to leave yet another familiar place for an unfamiliar place. From the read your story in tears I knew God has gripped my heart as a fatherâŠand I have been asking God to continue to shepherd that in me ever since. As I sit and remember all you have been throughâŠfrom 4 days under the rubble of an earthquake, through 5 major surgeriesâŠI am drawn to your sense of wonder. Since you joined our family you have played 2 seasons of soccer, 4 seasons of basketball (scoring the championship winning shot one year), 3 seasons of softball, 1 season of baseball (as the only girl in the league), and 2 seasons of track and field throwing discus and shot put. I love your hunger to try new things. Just the other day, I loved hearing you describe a situation at school where you stood up for the underdog. Your strength is a gift to all who know you. Your smile and laugh light up a room. Last year you thought we were making some plans to move and I loved what you said to meâŠâDad, you can move but I will stay here with Nana and Chach because this is my home.â You donât even know how my heart leaps when I remember thatâŠhave no fear VanessaâŠthis place is my home too. This place is where we are knownâŠthe good, bad and the uglyâŠwhich is the only way to be truly known. So, as we drive downtown today, I could not be more glad to be your dadâŠbecause I know when you call me âdaddyâ nowâŠthat you are speaking those words from a place of deepening trust. And in moments when you feel afraid, may you rest in the truth that you are a beloved daughter. That is something that will never never changeâŠever.
1435 is a beautiful number.Â
Itâs the number of days it took for the world to simply confirm what God had already made evident...you are ours and we are yours.Â
May we rest in our adoption as beloved son and daughters.Â
âLong before he laid down earthâs foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.â -The Apostle Paul (Ephesians 1:5 MSG)
