The ultimate Tagalog vs Filipino lesson

On to which extent do I distinguish Tagalog and Filipino? Basta walang Spanish words, tagalog na? Ganern?

Now this is Tagalog

Tagalog came from Pure Malay, the universal language of Maritime South East Asia. There comes the traders and missionaries that added Sanskrit and Arab in the vocabulary. Now, that omnious 'evolution' thingy is what happened to Malay language in the Tagalog kingdoms after 4000 + years of living their own lives. The vocab is pretty much the same, but the grammar and stressing rules became very different that Malay speakers cannot understand us nowadays.

This is Tagalog.

Bisaya has similar flavor but is more based on the evolution of Malay from the south.

Tagalog will have more evolutions after the Arabs and before the Spanish, but after the Spanish, I think that's it for the vocabulary. However, the way of speaking has become softer yet rashy, Romantic, even. Maybe nobody knows how ancient Tagalog originally sounded, but we can always listen to the Malaysians and Indonesians. They are soft and slow and pointy.

Ancient Tagalog natually stopped evolving on its own after the Spanish invation, and there came the new Tagalog. Some President (I forgot, sorry) hailed Filipino as the new language, which is said to be an ever evolving national language from various influences in the Philippine language including Spanish and English.

And most of my lessons in this blog is Ancient tagalog.

I became an English speaker at high school, and with english media, my thoughts became english, too. Now, whenever I try to describe something in Tagalog, my native language, I usually misuse some words. For example, this morning I wanted to say...

"It rained last night. I don't need to water the plants."

What came out of my mouth: "Umiyak ang langit kagabi. Ayokong lumabas."

what it actually meant: The heavens cried last night. I don't want to go out

It doesn't help that my voice become deeper and serious when I switch to my native tongue. Pls. It's embarrassing sometimes. But I love my language. If you're a Tagalog turned English speaker, I bet you had these moments as well.

Oh, I’m monolingual but I know a bit about this one! :D

So, in a lot of languages, there are multiple verbs that mean, “to love,” which are each situational, while, in English, we derive the meaning through context

Like, “Te quiero,” refers to love for friends and family, aka platonic love, while , “Te amo,” or, “Ai shiteru,” in Japanese, is so achingly tender and romantic that you might as well write the other person a receipt for your heart, because it’s theirs now

At some point, English did have multiple verbs for, “to love,” but eventually English speakers decided, “to hell with it, I only want 1 broad term for these big mushy feelings,” because we hate having multiple words for things almost as much as we hate punctuation

TL;DR: cultures that are non-English speaking do tell their kids they love them, they just have multiple words that mean, “To love,” and English is the odd man out because it got tired of that and went
