Grantchester
I've been putting off watching Grantchester because I figured it would be the same as Father Brown. It's actually very different and I have lots of thoughts (at least through what I've watched, i.e. Series 3).
James Norton, who plays the main character (a sleuthing vicar), is a great actor. I've only seen him in Happy Valley, where he plays a character who is an awful person in every way. But here, he plays a man of God, and a pillar of the small town of Grantchester. These characters are polar opposites, but he portrays both of them so well. So well that it's almost scary to watch him play a vicar after seeing him commit atrocious crimes in a different show.
The complicated romance between the vicar Sidney and his "friend" Amanda was almost unbearably cheesy at first. Pretty much all the other side romantic plots were cheesy too. But, throughout the subsequent series, the plots get better and draw out the complexities of the main characters. The romantic plots are still cheesy, but now they show the human shortcomings of the characters, and the internal struggle for acceptance within the confines of religion and society.
Sometimes, the flip-flopping of the romances is too drawn out (get together then break up x10). But, eventually there is a meaningful subplot from the process, and of course, the mysteries fill in the gaps in the romantic plots. Overall, I really like Grantchester because it's more focused on the characters than Father Brown, and more of a serial than a slew of mystery cases. I like Father Brown too, but Grantchester is different and I was pleasantly surprised by it.
