What if all male characters posed like the female ones?
The illustration demonstrates double standards, where humour derives from the fact that is it unusual to see men sexualised in the same way as women. This reconstructed cartoon reinforces the associated norms of gender asymmetry, supporting Mulveyās idea of gender imbalance.

What if roles were reversed?
If a woman is actively gazing at a man and objectifying him, does she instead have aĀ āfemale gazeā?
Mulvey considers aspects of a female gaze which includes woman looking at themselves, or that of other women, through the eyes of men. It can be suggested that women who also adopt an objectifying gaze may be conforming to norms established to benefit men, commonly portraying women as objects, figures or bodies.Ā

Just as it was in the 1970s, Mulveyās theory regarding sexual objectification on women in media may still be prevalent today.Ā
āTHE LOOKā:
Mulvey exaggerates thatĀ in film, theĀ āmale gazeā invokesĀ sexual politics which depict a provocative & sexualised way of looking that empowers men at their desire, and objectifies women.Ā
The āMale Gazeā can be illustrated when a camera puts the audience into the perspective of a heterosexual man. It is associated with the mediaās idea to create a fantasy for its viewer.Ā
In discussing her theory, Mulvey establishes her broader emphasis on media subjugation; thereby exposing female representation as subordinate to and dependent upon men. She suggests that women are optimised in their function as sexual objects; further constructing idealised on-screen images of human subjectivity.
Women are simultaneously looked at and displayed, with their appearance coded for strong visual and erotic impact.
