Yeah, this is why Metatron’s heaven instantly gave me the chills. Alastair was recalling something that had to do with Dean in hell with that song, so I initially figured that what Metatron gave Castiel wasn’t a mock-heaven, but it was hell.

But then I started thinking, hell is where he met Dean, so the song ties to the moment that they met. It was meant to remind us of Dean in place of the naked Deans they weren’t allowed to put it.

And let’s not forget that the first time Dean chose Castiel, he had to overcome his primal fear of Alastair.

and Metatron knew all of this because he’d read the Carver Edlund books. He knew that Cas had been the one who asked Dean to torture Alastair, and then felt bad for it. He knew that this was the moment when Cas seriously started choosing Dean over heaven

What I find beautiful is that Castiel saved Dean from Alastair and then Dean saved Castiel from Alastair. They saved each other. Castiel may be an angel and Dean just a man, but this makes them equal.

When I first heard the story of the naked Dean in Cas’ pretend Heaven, I just assumed it had to do with sex, shook my head at whoever had decided not to go with that, and moved on. But now I see these two scenes next to each other, I realize the naked Dean in Cas’ Heaven would have been Dean as Cas had found him in Hell: not an alluring temptation, that is, or even the inchoate hope of a romantic future together, but a broken, ruined, defeated and undefeated man, magnificent in his flawed humanity - and also the first step of Cas’ road to rebellion - to the discovery of his true self (and what love is, and how it feels around your heart and lungs).

Let’s talk about how upset Cas got when he realized that Dean was questioning his loyalty. Let’s talk about the fact that Cas is willing to sacrifice the trust of an entire army of angels in order to keep Dean’s trust. He could’ve actually explained why he can’t kill Dean, why Dean is necessary in the fight against Metatron. But he didn’t. Instead he chose to demonstrate that he will always choose Dean no matter the cost. He’s loyal to the end. And making sure Dean knows that is more important than maintaining his army.

Let’s talk about how Dean saying ‘stop saying you don’t know’ might also carry a layer of resentment over Cas answering ‘I don’t know’ to the question ‘what broke the connection’ and then disappearing, and by might I mean yes and I cry
