one of the funnier bits of Spike practicing his speech to Buffy in front of a blonde wig wearing mannequin, getting into a fictional argument with it, losing the fictional argument, and then throwing a tantrum, is the fact that he then calms himself, resets, and starts again. the viewer has no idea how many times this has happened.

What is deeply important to me about this is he’s practicing because he feels terrible about how hurt she was after showing her what riley was doing behind her back.

Spike wasn’t even in the wrong just potentially lacked tact but like what else are you supposed to in the situation except show her because no other way would she believe it.

So he is prepared to be blamed or punished by buffy for something he isn’t responsible for and plans to bring her a present in addition to his apology. Apologizing for things that aren’t his fault but his actions led to her feelings being hurt and bringing presents is clearly how he is used to operating with drusilla as we see that exact dynamic play out several times in season 2.

So he has this old playbook he’s working from also shown later with the shrine, the threatening to kill for buffy, and the buffy bot of obsession and undying loyalty showing his feelings are real because he is approaching his relationship with buffy in the same way he did with drusilla and the fundamental flaw of course being drusilla is literally a cracked and burned reflection of buffy herself so the raw emotions and sentiments are still right but the expression is wrong and it’s why everything changes after “I was made to love you” because now spike understands protecting the people she loves and especially dawn, helping her fight the good fight and in doing so helping lessen her burden is how to love buffy summers and that is spike’s only motivation. He wants to love buffy summers and in doing so he becomes one of earth’s greatest protectors because buffy loves humanity and he loves buffy 🥲
