His head canted to the side, holding his gaze on Karen’s flushed face. Her INNOCENCE was a breath of fresh air. She was something ENTIRELY DIFFERENT, a pure beam of light that he had never encountered amongst the close walls of New York City. How was HE ( of all people ) supposed to understand this LOYALTY & DEVOTION Karen seemed to feel in every bone of her body? Brows arched as he raised his cup again, taking a long thoughtful sip before speaking.

“ You have a boyfriend, yeah, ” A statement, not a question; it was an answer he knew, a simple fact stated to ( hopefully ) prove a point, “ How long have you been together? ”

“ Have you never ONCE wanted to stray from him? A passing stranger you bonded with on the subway, a celebrity on tv perhaps, an OLD FLAME revisited? ”

A short interjection —— feeble, muttering, three years —— and then arose Karen’s RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION. ( Miss Cartwright may not have carried much with her from that IOWA STATE OF MIND, but steadfast commitment even in the wake of doubt she held on to with an IRON GRIP. ) Dev wasn’t perfect, no one was, but he was smart, and handsome, and witty, and funny, and most importantly: he BELIEVED in her, in her future, when no one else did. What more was there to ASK FOR ?

❝ of course not. I LOVE HIM —— why would I want to ? ❞

Her eyes flicked aside for just a moment, JUST ENOUGH to suggest that maybe that wasn’t the entire truth. ( especially with Derek LOOKING AT HER like that, that cant of head and raise of brow that made her feel as raw as she had that night in nothing more than a WHITE SHIRT AND WILL ) But that was as much out of the question now as it was THEN. Wills could be charming, and brilliant, and CUTE; but more often than not he was demanding, sly, callous, not to mention a veritable LIBERTINE. She might have been a DUMB HICK, but she wasn’t that stupid.

Mrs. Wills couldn’t help but smile at the desperate SHOUT, a habit he couldn’t seem ( & she could hardly anticipate him to ) leave behind in the REHEARSAL HALL. &&, like a trained PUP, Karen was quickly summoned to leave WHATEVER it was she was currently occupied with ( just now, a bit of modified SCHUYLER CHOREOGRAPHY - harder to RELEARN than learn ) and stand, at her traditional place, right BEHIND that screen-shy husband of hers. A quick smile into the camera - still rolling, she noted - and Karen placed a QUICK KISS among the stubble that lay scattered across his cheek, and settled her chin upon grey-clad shoulder.

❛❛ what were you saying ? a few ——— SLEEPLESS NIGHTS ? ❜❜

With voice reaching a WHITE BUTTON DOWN MURMUR, she kissed now the corner of WOLFISH MOUTH, moving, between words, towards his lips until claiming them GRATEFULLY for herself. But it was over all too QUICKLY, and the rising star drew back from her ashen ICARUS seemingly content to leave him to his worsening predicament. The call she threw back at him was haphazard and FAINT, not at all the voice of a WELL INVESTED WIFE. ( even though he undoubtedly KNEW BETTER. )
