PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY and The Pharmacology of Profit
As a Podiatrist I work my way daily down through seemingly endless medication lists searching for the pertinent names that might affect the conditions I specifically treat. Blood thinners make the patient more prone to bleeding when injured and indicate an increased risk for clotting. Hypertension medications are prescribed for obvious reasonsāelevated blood pressure over the long run causes increased risk for cardiac events and deterioration in the organs and circulatory system. Cholesterol medications again, taken for obvious reasons, prescribed to reduce a patientās chances for succumbing to an unwanted cardiac event and the associated comorbidities, loss of function with a stroke, decreased cognitive ability, an untimely death can ensue.
Ā Ā The use of one particular treatment that hangs over me every time I encounter it inside a patientās chart, is the prescribing of Lyrica for painful Peripheral Neuropathy. Ā Sixty pills cost $260.00 at the minimum. The literature accompanying this medication runs blazing beyond the abyss of anyoneās attention span while listing all of the potential side effects one could encounter when consuming this medication. While the studies are replete with the arguments for such treatment, they overlook a simple and inexpensive alternative solution that exists today, right here in my office, a topical cream made from natural ingredients that when applied twice daily to the affected limb, will relieve the pain of Peripheral Neuropathy in more than half the patients who try it. You might say only half? It only works half the time? Thatās not good enough! Well, you need to consider the fact that many patients who are prescribed Lyrica end up going off of it because of the side effects. Also, if the online forums are to be believed, many patients are forced to discontinue the medication because of side effects, in numbers greater than is noted in the official studies on the drug. I wonder why that is? Still others are prescribed pain medications that constipate and can cause fatigue or can interact adversely with other medications.
Ā Ā Peripheral Neuropathy can be a debilitating affliction derived from any number of causative agents; Diabetes, alcohol abuse, spinal injury, and ironically, from the ingestion of certain prescription medications. When it is painful, and despite the existence of a topical treatment of nominal cost, the Insurance companies and Big Pharma both keep pushing prescription drugs for this particular diagnosis as if they are on the same side of the equation. Yet, the Insurance industry would truly be acting as a patientās advocate by providing formulary guidance on this particular issue, directing physicians away from prescription medication as first line treatment for painful Neuropathy. A 30 day trial of Dr. Swaimās pain cream applied twice daily to the appropriate area for painful Neuropathy in the feet could both spare the patient the risk of all the Lyrica side effects and at the same time save the Insurance industry millions of dollars in unnecessary prescriptions written for Lyrica annually. Doesnāt it shock, the lack of sincerity, the blatant lack of common sense displayed sometimes in the field of medicine. Companies donāt look for solutions if they arenāt motivated to find answers that fit within their profit paradigm. My solution is inexpensive, not good for their equation, but still, a reasonable attempt at solving a problem and more often than not, is effective. It also works to lower the overall cost of medical care and that helps everyone. You might want to give it a try.

Entity Relationship Diagram - a database design tool that provides graphical representation of database tables, their columns and inter-relationships. ERD is the most popular database design tool. It works particularly well in complex database design that involves a large volume of entities and with complex relationships. A well-developed ERD can provide sufficient information for database administrator to follow when developing and maintaining database.
Class Diagram - used to describe the structure of a system by showing its classes, their attributes and operations, it is generated from the Entity Relationship Diagram.
Sequence Diagram ā used to model the collaboration of objects on a time sequence. It shows how the objects interact with others in a particular scenario of a use case.Ā
Activity Diagram - used to display the sequence of activities. Activity diagrams show the workflow from a start point to the finish point detailing the many decision paths that exist in the progression of events contained in the activity.
Technical Feasibility ā is a Ā large part of determining resources. It considers the technical requirements of the proposed project. The technical requirements are then compared to the technical capability of the organization. The systems project is considered technically feasible if the internal technical capability is sufficient to support the project requirements.Ā The analyst must find out whether current technical resources can be upgraded or added to in a manner that fulfills the request under consideration.Ā This is where the expertise of system analysts is beneficial, since using their own experience they will be able to answer the question of technical feasibility.
The essential questions that help in testing the operational feasibility of a system include the following:
Ā·Ā Ā Is the project feasible within the limits of current technology?
Ā·Ā Ā Does the technology exist at all?
Ā·Ā Ā Is it available within given resource constraints?
Ā·Ā Ā Is it a practical proposition?
Ā·Ā Ā Is manpower is (programmers, testers & debuggers) available?
Ā·Ā Ā Are software and hardware requirements available?
Ā·Ā Ā Are the current technical resources sufficient for the new system?
Ā·Ā Ā Can they be upgraded to provide to provide the level of technology necessary for the new system?
Ā·Ā Ā Do we possess the necessary technical expertise, and is the schedule reasonable?
Ā·Ā Ā Can the technology be easily applied to current problems?
Ā·Ā Ā Does the technology have the capacity to handle the solution?
Ā·Ā Ā Do we currently possess the necessary technology?
Operational feasibility -Ā is the ability to utilize, support and perform the necessary tasks of a system or program. It includes everyone who creates, operates or uses the system. To be operationallyĀ feasible, the system must fulfill a need required by the business.
Operational feasibility is dependent on human resources available for the project and involves projecting whether the system will be used if it is developed and implemented. Operational feasibility is a measure of how well a proposed system solves the problems, and takes advantage of the opportunities identified during scope definition and how it satisfies the requirements identified in the requirements analysis phase of system development. It reviews the willingness of the organization to support the proposed system. This is probably the most difficult of the feasibilities to gauge. In order to determine this feasibility, it is important to understand the management commitment to the proposed project. If the request was initiated by management, it is likely that there is management support and the system will be accepted and used. However, it is also important that the employee base will be accepting of the change.Ā
The essential questions that help in testing the operational feasibility of a system include the following:
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Does current mode of operation provide adequate throughput and response time?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Does current mode provide end users and managers with timely, pertinent, accurate and useful formatted information?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Does current mode of operation provide cost-effective information services to the business?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Could there be a reduction in cost and or an increase in benefits?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Does current mode of operation offer effective controls to protect against fraud and to guarantee accuracy and security of data and information?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Does current mode of operation make maximum use of available resources, including people, time, and flow of forms?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Does current mode of operation provide reliable services?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Are the services flexible and expandable?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Are the current work practices and procedures adequate to support the new system?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā If the system is developed, will it be used?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Are there manpower problems, labor objections, manager resistance, organizational conflicts and policies, social acceptability, government regulations?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Does management support the project?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Are the users not happy with current business practices?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Will it reduce the time (operation) considerably?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Have the users been involved in the planning and development of the project?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Will the proposed system really benefit the organization?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Does the overall response increase?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Will accessibility of information be lost?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Will the system affect the customers in considerable way?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Are there legal aspects?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā How do the end-users feel about their role in the new system?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā What end-users or managers may resist or not use the system?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā How will the working environment of the end-user change?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Can or will end-users and management adapt to the change?
Economic Feasibility
Economic analysis could also be referred to as cost/benefit analysis. It is the most frequently used method for evaluating the effectiveness of a new system. In economic analysis the Ā procedure is to determine the benefits and savings that are expected from a candidate system and compare them with costs. If benefits outweigh costs, then the decision is made to design and implement the system. An entrepreneur must accurately weigh the cost versus benefits before taking an action.
Possible questions raised in economic analysis are:
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Is the system cost effective?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Do benefits outweigh costs?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā What is the cost of doing full system study?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā What is the cost of business employee time?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā What is the estimated cost of hardware?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā What is the estimated cost of software/software development?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Is the project possible, given the resource constraints?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā What are the savings that will result from the system?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā What is the cost of employees' time for study?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā What is the cost of packaged software/software development
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Is there a selection among alternative financing arrangements (rent/lease/purchase)?
The concerned business must be able to see the value of the investment it is pondering before committing to an entire system study.Ā If short-term costs are not overshadowed by long-term gains or produce no immediate reduction in operating costs, then the system is not economically feasible, and the project should not proceed any further. If the expected benefits equal or exceed costs, the system can be judged to be economically feasible. Economic analysis is used for evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed system.
The economical feasibility will review the expected costs to see if they are in-line with the projected budget or if the project has an acceptable return on investment. At this point, the projected costs will only be a rough estimate. The exact costs are not required to determine economic feasibility. It is only required to determine if it is feasible that the project costs will fall within the target budget or return on investment. A rough estimate of the project schedule is required to determine if it would be feasible to complete the systems project within a required timeframe. The required timeframe would need to be set by the organization.Ā
Relevance of the Technology - the importance of the proposed technology to the daily operation of the target company/institution. This is due to the fact that in todayās dynamic world, life without technology is meaningless.
Answers the question:
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Is there really a need to bring tools that will ease operation?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Is there a use and exchange of information?
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Is making advance operational changes one of the goals of the company/institution?

HIGH IQ: THE ONLY KEY TO SUCCESS
If you were asked, "who do you think is more likely to succeed, people who are intellectually blessed or the people who has low IQ?" Perhaps, you would immediately answer, "The intellectually blessed!". Yes! Why not? But before we stick on our final choice, let us first go back to the definition of success. Success means, the accomplishment of what is desired and aimed, depending on one's ability to create options and alternatives in life. This statement clearly indicates that success isn't only exclusive to those who are having high level of intelligence but also to those people who may not be intellectually blessed but are able to play one's cards right.
According to the researchers, people they coined to have low or average intelligence were overall, just about as successful and wealthy as those with higher scores on an IQ test. We have heard many stories about people who aren't extremely intelligent but have gotten themselves into the stairway of success because of their ability to weave through the challenges of life. They are those people who has the skill or technique on playing one's cards right, no matter how bad the cards that they have.
This present a clear manifestation that people don't become rich just because they are smart. It requires not just intelligence to be successful, but it also needs the skills on dealing with the ways to achieve one's goal in life. When a person has the ability to find ways of achieving the nearly impossible things through great perseverance, they are more likely to cross the line and hit the mark. Another component of success that should be taken into consideration is "attitude", this consists of not just social skills but emotional maturity, the capability to make decisions wisely and goal setting, flexibility to change and adopting positive qualities from people we consider as our role models.
Perhaps one can presume that if he/she if gifted with superior intelligence then his/her chances to succeed would be more than those who are not blessed as him/her intellectually. Those with low intelligence should not think they have the least chances to become successful and those with high level of intelligence should not believe that they have a definite advantage. The formula for success isn't only about being intelligent but also includes an ability of making things happen and attitude for it to be completely achieved. We may lack one or the other, but we can still achieve success.
Why is it so hard to lose weight?
What is the Job of Villi?
The villi are sites of nutrient absorption. Nutrients are absorbed by the cells of the villi into the capillaries within them. This absorption makes vitamins and nutrients available to your blood and lymphatic fluid. Intestinal juice provides the means for which absorption can occur. However, not all nutrients are absorbed. Some digestion also takes place within the small intestine. The cells of the villi produce enzymes which help digest carbohydrates and protein. Most all of the absorption which occurs in your body takes place in the small intestine through the action of the villi. It is not difficult to see then how vital these body structures are.
Supporting role So then, what is the job of villi other than digestion and absorption? The cells of the villi synthesize some enzymes which are destroyed by the acidic environment of the stomach to continue the digestive process. These enzymes initiate a series of chemical reactions which will break down nutrients into usable forms. Healthy Villi, A weight loss secret Why are healthy villi a big weight loss secret? You will find out here. Why is it so hard to lose weight? Do you find it difficult to lose weight? You might be working out every day and eating less food. But for some reason, you still weigh the same and your waistline does not change. Worse yet, you might even be gaining more body fats and weight! You feel more confused and frustrated. You may notice that your cravings for fats and sweets increase as you grow older. You might experience health problems. You also easily get tired.
Why is this so? In your intestines, there are many finger-like protrusions called villi. They absorb the nutrients from the food you eat. Through the years, they may get damaged and break off. As they continue to become damaged, it becomes increasingly difficult for your body to absorb nutrients. Avoid these things because they damage your body:
Ā Ā Ā stress
Ā Ā Ā alcohol
Ā Ā Ā additives
Ā Ā Ā airborne toxins like exhaust fumes
Ā Ā Ā medications
Ā Ā Ā smoking
Ā Ā Ā unhealthy fats
Ā Ā Ā preservatives
Ā Ā Ā drugs
Ā Ā Ā too much salts
Constipated? One of the most common experience of people who have weight and health issues is constipation. Drinking enough quantities of water helps. But it is not enough. You need to clean up your intestines with soluble and insoluble fiber and protect them with DHA+EPA Omega-3.
What happens when you do not get enough nutrients? You start needing more food. Your appetite increases as do your cravings. You also start to crave fats and sugars because they taste good and are the easiest substances for your body to absorb. You easily get tired and experience fatigue when your body is not getting proper nutrition. When those finger-like protrusions in your intestines are not healthy, they do not absorb nutrient that well. Your body thinks you are starving. You now store or keep more body fats, instead of burning them. You may be saying, "Well, I eat really healthy. I love low-fat foods. I take vitamins. I regularly go to the gym." But how often do you eat a healthy balanced meal? Itās great if you eat healthy meals everyday. And, yes, you love low-fat foods. How many servings do you eat? More than what you need? What is the quality of your multi-vitamins? Even though you may be doing those things, you can still be experiencing the symptoms described above.
The Secret! The underlying problem is most likely poor nutrient absorption. No matter how much healthy food plus vitamin and mineral supplements you take in, if your body is not absorbing them, then it is a total waste. Again, simple carbohydrates (sugars) are the easiest to absorb. If your intestines are not healthy, you often absorb more of these simple carbs and less of the other nutrients. What happens? Your body remains hungry. You keep craving and eating. You absorb lots of sugars. Excessive carbs result to body fats. Then you easily get sick. Villi are a big weight loss secret. Ensure they are clean and healthy. Ensure that your body is able to absorb nutrients. Eat healthy colorful meals. Then your pH balance improves. You have better control over your cravings and hunger. You eventually lose weight and re-gain your health!
What should you do? You need to consume enough fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. Fiber cleans your villi and intestines. You can get fiber from fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates. DHA+EPA Omega-3 is needed for villi health. (Know more about omega-3. It can help you lose weight, too!) You can get fiber and omega-3 from nutritional supplements. Just get the ones with good quality. To maximize your benefits, do not take Omega-3 supplements when you are having a fiber-rich meal. Fiber absorbs fats --both good and bad fats. Have you measured yourself already? One of the most important things to learn and have in nutrition, weight loss, and better health is your healthy breakfast. Help your body re-generate healthy cells by getting proper nutrition. This also helps you flush out toxins. When you reach your ideal weight, continue with your healthy diet, regularly exercise, and have a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life.
Why do we enjoy horror stories?
It seems silly to think that people would willingly experience discomfort. But this is exactly what happens whenever you read a horror story or watch a scary movie. You spend money for a movie ticket or a book specially for the purpose of getting scared. Why do we like to get scared?
There are several theories on why scary stories are so popular. Some say that horror stories provides us a cautionary tale, sometimes that reminds us what not to do...Or else! Another explanation is that horror stories allow us to experience fear without actually being put in real danger. We get the cold sweat, the hair standing on the backs of our necks, the dryness in our mouth, and the rush of adrenaline that comes with being scared but all within our control, ready to be stopped if we decide we can't handle it. Still another explanation is that people don't actually want to feel the fear, they want to feel the relief that comes after the fear has gone.
Things you need to know about ampalaya (bitter gourd) tea
Ampalaya, also known as bitter gourd or bitter melon, is a native fruit from Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Tea made from this fruit is available commercially or can be prepared fresh at home. There are some indications that drinking tea from ampalaya has health benefits, especially for diabetics. Ampalaya tea is not meant to replace medical treatment. If you have diabetes, or are at risk, you should discuss the use of this product with your doctor. 1. Nutrients
Bitter gourd is a fruit that contains many nutrients. According to the website Ayurbalance, ampalaya contains vitamins A, B-1, B-2 and C. The plant also offers a variety of essential minerals, such as iron, copper and potassium. Although marketed as tea, you can also use ampalaya in soups and for any dish calling for a fresh vegetable. 2. Blood Sugar
Ampalaya tea has been looked at closely as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes. With this condition, the body becomes resistant to insulin and, therefore, has difficulty regulating blood sugar. Drinking ampalaya tea is said to lower blood sugar naturally. This has not been disproven by clinical studies, but according to NYC Langone Medical Center, significant trials are limited to animal testing. Agriculture Business Week reports that one commercial ampalaya tea has been approved by the Bureau of Food and Drugs in the Philippines as appropriate for the distinct dietary needs of patients with diabetes. 3. Cancer
Another possible value for ampalaya tea is as a preventive treatment for cancer. Science has a long way to go before proving tea from this fruit will work to inhibit the growth of cancer. NYU Langone Medical Center states that there is some evidence of this benefit, but at this phase, clinical studies have not gone past test tube research. 4. Risks and Safety
There are some risks to consider when drinking ampalaya tea. Maintaining proper blood sugar levels when you have diabetes is a balancing act, and this tea may actually lower blood sugar. Taking a supplement, such as ampalaya tea, and a prescription medication may make blood sugar crash. For a diabetic, this is a significant danger. According to NYU Langone Medical Center, two children fell into a diabetic coma after taking bitter melon. If you have diabetes, prescription medication has proven effects, but ampalaya tea is strictly theoretical. Do not combine your diabetic medication with this supplement. 5. Warning
Amapalaya tea may worsen ulcers or heartburn. Diabetics should not cease taking medications without consulting a doctor.

Blueberry Pancake Recipe
Ingredients
1 cup plain stoneground flour 1/2 cup wholemeal stoneground flour 1/2 cup almond meal 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 eggs 1.5 cups skim milk 1/2 cup fat free, sugar free natural yoghurt 1 grated apple 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 cup blueberries (snap frozen blueberries are just as delicious) 2-3 scoops additional yoghurt Fresh fruit: pictured: apple, pear, banana, kiwi fruit, berries, mango, blood orange ā but use whatever is fresh, available and in season ā thus cheaper. Chop the fruit in small pieces and mix together in a bowl. Mix the flours, almond meal and baking powder together. Form a well in the center of the flour and add the eggs and yoghurt. Mix together, and once the eggs are combined, gradually add the milk a little at a time. When combined, add grated apple and blueberries, and stir in olive oil. Heat a griddle or heavy based fry pan to a medium heat. Ladle a scoop of mixture on the pan and spread around. When bubbles begin to form, use an egg flip to turn the pancake. Takes approximately 1-2 minutes on each side to cook. If the first pancake burns, turn the heat down a little, if the first pancake cooks too slowly, you can bring the heat up a little. Usually you can't get the first one quite right. Serve two pancakes with lots of fresh fruit and a scoop of yoghurt. In the bottom of the bowl of fruit, some juice will have collected, pour over the yoghurt for a little additional sweetness. When cooled wrap left over pancakes in a plastic, if refrigerated they will keep for 24 hrs.
Health Benefits of Okra (Lady Finger)
A guy has been suffering from constipation for the past 20 years and recently from acid reflux. He didn't realize that the treatment could be so simple -- OKRA! He started eating okra within the last 2 months and since then has never taken medication again. All he did was consume 6 pieces of OKRA everyday. He's now regular and his blood sugar has dropped from 135 to 98, with his cholesterol and acid reflux also under control. Okra is a powerhouse of valuable nutrients, nearly half of which is soluble fiber in the form of gums and pectins. Soluble fiber helps to lower serum cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease. The other half is insoluble fiber which helps to keep the intestinal tract healthy, decreasing the risk of some forms of cancer, especially colon-rectal cancer. Nearly 10% of the recommended levels of vitamin B6 and folic acid is also present in a half cup of cooked okra. Okra is a rich source of many nutrients, including fiber, vitamin B6 and folic acid. Ms Sylvia W. Zook, Ph.D. (nutritionist) has very kindly provided the following thought-provoking comments on the many benefits of this versatile vegetable. They are well worth reading. 1. The superior fiber found in okra helps to stabilize blood sugar as it curbs the rate at which sugar is absorbed from the intestinal tract. 2. Okra's mucilage not only binds cholesterol but bile acid carrying toxins dumped into it by the filtering liver. But it doesn't stop there... 3. Many alternative health practitioners believe all disease begins in the colon. The okra fiber, absorbing water and ensuring bulk in stools, helps prevent constipation. Fiber in general is helpful for this but okra is one of the best, along with ground flax seed and psyllium. Unlike harsh wheat bran, which can irritate or injure the intestinal tract, okra's mucilage soothes, and okra facilitates elimination more comfortably by its slippery characteristic many people abhor. In other words, this incredibly valuable vegetable not only binds excess cholesterol and toxins (in bile acids) which cause numerous health problems, if not evacuated, but also assures their easy passage from the the body. The veggie is completely non-toxic, non-habit forming (except for the many who greatly enjoy eating it), has no adverse side effects, is full of nutrients and is economically within reach of most. 4. Further contributing to the health of the intestinal tract, okra fiber (as well as flax and psyllium) has no equal among fibers for feeding the good bacteria (probiotics). 5. To retain most of okra's nutrients and self-digesting enzymes, it should be cooked as little as possible, e.g. with low heat or lightly steamed. Some eat it raw.
