After a great deal of thinking and indecision I have decided to step away from this blog indefinitely. It’s necessary. It’s time.

I am not giving up blogging entirely, but giving out my new online home to a large group of people would half defeat the purpose. Even though there’s a number of you I’m tempted to message. I haven’t really decided how to handle this part of the transition. If you’re really, truly, interested, and we’re friends or friendly mutuals, send me an ask or email, and when I decide how I’m proceeding—it might take a while—I’ll let you know.

The short version (believe it or not) of my dream this morning: I was on some college campus, but it was a weird campus, and there was a sprawling "mega church", purportedly Catholic, where a scary-bad mass was "celebrated" and I attempted to save consecrated hosts from desecration (ground into the carpet by shoes kind of desecration) with a young child who was unwittingly involved but the hosts turned into potato chip like fragments and consistency and became powder. The priest I turned to for help laughed at me, trashed the fragments, and *vacuumed* the dust. Then HH made friends with a priest and his wife (but they were Roman?) who were also farmers but they turned out to be the leaders of an openly heretical sect basically out to overthrow the pope. Then B woke me up but I went back to sleep a bit later and the priest and his wife returned but they weren't Catholic anymore (and my dream-brain had no memory of the previous dream, except that I recognized them, even though he looked completely different,) but he was cheating on her, and tried hitting on me, but I was getting flashes of insight where I experienced the wife's emotional state with all five senses (she didn't know he was cheating but was going through some really hard times) so I kept trying to get the guy to go talk to her, and there were a lot of public bath houses--like Roman baths, but with showers, and very modern.

I have made a hORrible miSTAKE

I need to talk about Granny Weatherwax.

As the Tiffany Aching books progressed I had this impression that Granny was… Dying. Not sick, just old, so old that her body had begun to falter. She was starting to die of old age.

I saw that and I thought, no, not Granny, it mustn’t happen. She embodies the soul and centre, to borrow her phrase, of witchcraft on the Discworld and arguably parts of Roundworld. I didn’t want to face her mortality.

Then Terry Pratchett died.

And somehow, in the midst of this mourning, I realised that… That I was wrong. Wrong about myself. I saw the reason that I feared Granny’s death.

Because I need it.

I need to see how that incredible woman faced death. A witch who, if any could, must possess the skill to avoid death and who never would. She’d know better than to resist, come her time. I needed to see her make peace with herself, to prepare the world for her departure.

Now I’ll never know. I’ll never see that last part of her life. And I asked myself, should I write it? Should I kill Esmeralda Granny Weatherwax?

Which is when I realised WHY I needed to see her death written down. Because in her, that angry woman, reluctantly good witch, who understood the power of story but was not beholden to it, would be a facet of Terry facing his end. The anger, the understanding, the will. Through Granny, a chance to understand.

That chance is gone.

Now here I sit (and here I am ashamed), with a story growing inside me. The last story of Esmeralda Weatherwax, in a sense. She has so much to do, so many fools to protect from themselves, and she knows that she’s going to die. What an embuggerance. Well, first she must do the job that’s in front of her.

What right have I? Beyond a gaping hole in my chest.
