CHARACTER INFORMATION FOR: Jana Kristine Rivera.
𝑩𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒕 𝒐𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒏 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 ; a friendship like no other.
When Jana joined station 19, she made a quick friend in @valiantmorale. They bonded over running and their love for sports in general and became quick friends. Jana turned to Maya about her abusive ex and Maya was the first person to meet her daughter when she had her. Now her daughter was seven years old and unfortunately, she was being bullied.
Arizona had tried to fix the problem by hosting a sleepover for Sofia and Aria but then something happened and Aria was rushed to the ER. Everything seemed to be fine now but Jana needed to clear her head. It was messy and full of thoughts about how she could do more to protect her daughter so she headed to the station gym before shift, needing to blow off steam.
As she walked in the door, she saw the one person she needed to see. Maya. She was warming up, possibly just about to start her workout when Jana walked over to her and smiled. It was obvious on her face that something was going on, but for a moment, she wanted to forget about it. “Hey,” she said. “I know you’re probably about to work out before our shift starts, but do you want to join me on a run? I could really use a friend.”
Maya wasn’t someone who made friends easily. She was super rough around the edges and just didn’t really let herself open up to anyone so easily. But when Jana joined the 19 family, they had become quick friends. They ran together and their love for sports was another bonding moment. But when Jana had her daughter, Maya was there the day it happened and she has been a huge part of Jana’s life and Aria’s as well.
Maya clears her head by just being by herself, with her AirPods in and she is usually at the gym in the station. She has been having issues just clearing her head, and the one person she wanted to talk to had a lot going on and Maya knew she would come here when she was ready to be back. Until then, Maya has kept to herself, because she was done letting the attention be all on her for right now and she was sitting there looking over a few things and stretching before she started her workout.
But as she was finishing up her stretching she seen Jana approach and she couldn’t help but smile, but she could tell something was on her mind, and like Maya, running cleared their head and they were able to talk about things, and just allow the other to vent and try to understand and help the best they could. “Lucky for you I just stretched. But I am down to run if that’s what you want to do. Thought I was going to have to get lost in my own thoughts today. But just know if you need to talk on the run, I am your person.”
Jana was so thankful to have found a family here at 19. It was through the love and support that everyone here showed her that she was finally able to leave her ex. He didn’t treat her right, and Maya had noticed. She had tried to talk to Jana about it, but at the time, she shut her out. Everything changed when Jana discovered she was pregnant and Maya helped her escape her relationship. Because of that, Jana had a healthy baby girl who was growing up to be a very loved child.
She was grateful to see Maya standing in the station gym today. That was where she usually found her anyway, but there was so much on Jana’s mind and talking to someone that wasn’t involved in the situations she was facing was the best therapy she needed right now. She couldn’t help but to smile as her friend immediately guessed that something was wrong.
“We can talk and run. Right now, all I want - and need - to do is run.” Jana said, releasing a heavy breath. She was one of the only people who could keep up with Maya on a run and it allowed the two of them to bond further. With a gesture for Maya to leave the room with her, she turned and walked out. “Thanks for coming with me. I really appreciate it.”
Maya has been through so much, even with these people at station 19. It has been a love and hate relationship with them with Maya. But she was trying to change her ways. Lately she has been keeping to herself. But one person who never judged her and she didn’t judge was Jana. She had a young kid and she knew he was going through somethings, and that is when Maya wanted to step in. Not tell her what she was doing, but just help guide her in the right direction. And once she did Maya knew she was in a better place.
But lately, Maya has been in the gym a lot more at the station, avoiding everything else that was going on. No one really spoke to her and she was kind of alone, except for Jana. But once she seen Jana she knew something was wrong and they needed to talk about something. So she just nodded and understood she didn’t want to talk about it until they were out of the station and talk.
“Don’t thank me. I just know how it is talking about things in this place, people listen and spread rumors.” Once they got to the front of the building, they seen Vic standing there. “We will be back, going for a run.” She just looked at them as Maya led Jana out and once outside she looked at her motioning for her to get ready to start their jog.
The best distraction for someone like Jana and Maya was sports. Specifically running. Jana had always been big into running and so when she bonded with the gold medal Olympian, it was a dream come true. Jana was the only person at the station who could keep up with Maya and with everything that had happened in Jana’s life lately, she needed to run.
As they made their way out of the station, Jana released another breath and nodded. “Yeah, people can’t help but spread the twisted versions of a story.” She rolled her eyes and as soon as Maya gestured for her to jog, Jana just took off. She began running, quicker than they usually do, attacking the run with a lot of unexpected force and fight.
Maya used running as a way to clear her mind. When Jana started at the station, that is where the two of them got to know one another more. They ran together. When things were on their mind and when things were looking too bad to come out, they talked as they ran and it helped. Jana had become one of Maya’s best friends and this morning was no different, she could tell Jana needed to talk and both of them talked in the form of running.
“Oh trust me, I know that better then anyone at this point with this station and people.” Watching Jana take off, Maya knew it was something and she was running quicker then normal, and Maya caught up and ran the same pace as the other woman. “Want to tell me why you are sprinting right now?”
Jana was focused today. Her mind hadn’t stopped racing, thoughts spiralling in her mind about her daughter and everything that had happened lately with her. Aria was going through a tough time at school. She was being bullied and couldn’t stand up to them. On top of that, she had just been burnt in an open fire when toasting smores. A lot was going on and Jana just needed to forget about it.
As Maya caught up, Jana just ran faster. She had heard what her friend asked, but she couldn’t answer. She was determined to keep going until her body collapsed. It was the only way to get through this.

Sometimes It Is The Little Things That Make An Impact
Arizona came to Seattle not expecting anything. But she met Callie and fell in love and had a daughter to show for that. Sure, it wasn’t the normal way people think when having a kid, and Arizona was head over heels in love with having a daughter and being with someone who loved her. But things happened and that marriage ended before they could fix anything else. After the plane crash, and losing her leg, Arizona wasn’t the same person she was when she first met Callie, and it wasn’t a bad thing, but things were rough but Arizona was getting back to how she was before all of that. It took a lot of therapy and it took her sometime to get used to Callie not being there, and Sofia going back and forth between New York and Seattle.
Arizona had her ever other year and when Sofia came back, her work load was less as she had time off. But when Sofia was gone, Arizona barely took days off and she worked harder so she can have those days off to get Sofia settled back in. But one day, she was on call, and a woman came in and she was having a baby. Sure, Arizona was a fetal surgeon, but she could bring babies into the world and that is just what she did. The woman’s name was Jana and she had been through a lot it seems and Arizona helped her bring a healthy little girl into this world. It is the best feeling in the world, seeing both mother and child healthy after being in the hospital.
But after discharging @heatedbravery and Aria, as jana named her baby, Arizona was back at work when she was surprised with flowers and chocolate. She hasn’t this type of surprise in so long, and a smile was evident on Arizona’s face. It was the idea, but getting to talk to Jana, she was feeling like they could be something and that is when Arizona asked her out, now that she wasn’t her patient and her child wasn’t her patient anymore. When Jana said yes, Arizona might have freaked out as she hasn’t been on an actual date that didn’t end after a one night stand in so long. Callie was the last person she may have actually dated and she married her. So this was nerve wracking but it should go well. As they went on their date, they hit it off and Arizona wanted to see her more. They have been together for over a year now and things have been going well. Better then Arizona would have thought about.
With Sofia back and settled in and knowing about Jana and being okay with it. Things have been going smoothly but seeing the turmoil on Jana’s face about Aria and how she was having a hard time at school. Arizona has been as she was always the new kid after eighteen months of being somewhere and then moving and being the kid with the weird name and being new. Then as she got older, being gay and in a new place. So she feels where Aria is coming from and as a mother she knows where Jana is coming from. It wasn’t always the easiest to deal with it, and it wasn’t always something that came easy as parents, but they make it work.
Arizona wanted to see Jana and she left Sofia with a sleepover at Meredith’s place with Zola because she felt Jana and her needed to talk. She wanted to help the best way she could and if that meant going over there alone and really just helping the brunette then that’s what she was going to do. Arizona grabbed her things and she was out the door and into her car heading over to Jana’s. Once she pulled into the driveway, she turned the car off and sat there for a moment before grabbing her things before she slipped from the car and walked up the driveway. She lifted her hand and she rang the doorbell once. Not sure if aria was asleep, but she wanted to be there and she wanted to talk to Jana before things got worst and of course she wanted to help. That’s all Arizona ever wants to do is help when she can. She waited for the door to open.
Jana had been through so much in her life. Between her parents and one of her brothers dying in a house fire and then the abusive relationship she shared with Harley Ortiz. She really had been put through the ringer and it would have been so easy for her to just give up fighting, to give in to the life she had settled into, but she didn’t and she had everyone at station 19 to thank for that. Pruitt Herrera was the one to put everything in motion. He saved her from that house fire and then introduced her into a world of firefighters and friendship within 19. Jana fought hard to become a firefighter and when she succeeded, she settled right into 19 like the missing piece of a puzzle. Perfect fit.
Her closest friend there was Maya Bishop. The two bonded over their love for running but their friendship took flight after that and thrived. Maya had noticed the bruises on Jana’s wrists when she started getting romantically involved with Harley Ortiz and although she had pressed for more information, Jana swore that everything was fine and asked Maya to drop it. Out of respect for her friend, she did drop it but over time, things went from bad to worse and Jana found out she was pregnant. She knew she had to get out because there was no way she was bringing a baby into that house.
For eight months of her pregnancy, Harley was loving and gentle. He helped her when she dropped things and did everything for her. He didn’t lay a single hand on her but the day she told him that she was leaving, everything changed. He beat her to within an inch of her life, breaking her arm, dislocating her shoulder and leaving his mark on every inch of her body. Jana fought back, knowing she had to fight for the health of her baby and managed one swift and firm blow to his head. Little did she know, Harley developed a bleed in his brain and passed away on the same day that Jana went into labour.
Due to the beating and the injuries, her body wasn’t in the best place it needed to be on its healing journey. She wasn’t healthy enough to continue the pregnancy and was forced to give birth before it became a danger to her unborn baby. Arizona Robbins was present at the birth, holding Jana’s hand and making sure the baby was okay once she was born. It meant a lot to Jana to have someone in her corner but for 5 years after Aria Jo Rivera was born, Jana didn’t see Arizona again. Their jobs, although in the same topic of emergencies, were very different and it wasn’t until 5 year old Aria Jo sprained her arm at school that Jana got to see the very woman who made sure she had a healthy birth.
Arizona was great in keeping Jana and Aria calm as she treated Aria for her sprained arm. It was a very bad sprain, close to fracturing, and Arizona made sure that everyone was calm and happy. It was incredible to watch and as Jana watched the blonde heal her child, she realised that she was in awe and decided to show up the next day at the hospital with flowers and chocolates. Arizona asked her out on a date and for a year, they dated until calling it official just after Aria’s 6th birthday.
Now, they had been dating for a year and in that year, Arizona had shown Jana what real love was. She was composed and kind. She was gentle and warm. She held her as she woke up from nightmares about Harley and stayed by her side as the panic attacks subsided. She was understanding of Jana’s fear of being touched and remained patient as Jana slowly began to get over that fear. Arizona really was perfect and Jana was so thankful to have her in her life. Another thing that was great about Arizona was the fact that she had a little girl around Aria’s age and with everything going on with Aria lately, Jana was glad to have another mother to talk to about it all.
Aria was being bullied and Jana had tried everything she could to make it stop. She had spoken to teachers, the principal, the parents of the children bullying Aria and even the children themselves but it didn’t stop. Jana had just picked Aria up from school and the seven year old simply wouldn’t stop crying. She was sobbing so uncontrollably that she had given herself a headache and hearing her child’s cries was too hard on Jana. She made dinner for Aria and then put her to bed. After Aria was asleep, she sat herself down on the couch and tried to think of another way to help her. It broke her heart hearing her child cry like that, but she had no time to think as her doorbell sounded and forced her off the couch. She opened the door and relief washed over her, relaxing every muscle in her body as she saw the blonde peds surgeon standing in front of her.
“Arizona…” She spoke in a soft tone, leaning against the doorframe for a moment. “I’m so glad you’re here tonight.” She then stepped aside so that the blonde could walk in. “Come in. I could really use the company.”
