We saw a lot of great shows, festivals, and events this year. Our photographers Amber Davis and Zack Hughes compiled their favorite photos they captured throughout 2014.

We caught up with Michael Ford Jr. (vocals, guitar) on the eve of the band’s biggest show ever to find out how the band is prepping to ring in the new year.
Do615: You will be performing at Jack Daniel’s Bash on Broadway which will feature a televised celebration featuring performances by Gavin DeGraw and Lady Antebellum. How does it feel to be able to open up for them on New Years Eve?
MFJR: Honestly, the whole thing still feels very surreal to me……we’re honored to be a part of such a big night and to have the opportunity to bring in the New Years with so many of our friends and family in Nashville. We’ve been looking forward to this show more than anything else we’ve done this year. From an attendance standpoint, it’ll be the biggest show the band has played in our five years.
Do615: How has living and working in Nashville contributed to your sound?
MFJR: This city is such a melting pot for music right now…..we’ve got friends in everything from country to garage rock n’ roll bands and I think being constantly inundated with all different kinds of music helps to keeps our influences diversified.
Do615: Looking back on the hundreds of shows you have played, which one has been your favorite and why?
MFJR: So far, my favorite show we’ve played was the Gentleman of The Road stopover in Dixon, IL. It was one of the shows where the band was ‘gelling’ just right and the crowd was unbelievable from the beginning of the set.
Do615: Since 2014 was HUGE for you guys, what’s the next step in 2015?
MFJR: Continuing to tour behind the record and get it out there to more folks.
Do615: The tour across the pond starts a couple weeks into January so what are you guys doing to prepare for that month of UK madness? Also, what’s the bands downtime like before taking on a tour of that magnitude?
MFJR: Hahahahahaha … nothing too exciting, getting batteries, power adapters, and doing laundry. When we’re home we keep things pretty low key…for me its spending time with family/friends and hanging out in my favorite coffee shop.

Do615: Game of Thrones features some of the most majestic locations on the planet. What has been your favorite spot to film?
KN: There are so many. Most of our stuff has been filmed in Northern Ireland, which is my home turf. Firstly it makes me extremely proud of our little country, and also, it has introduced me to some beauty spots I might have simply driven past day to day. The location scouts are very good at what they do. I really enjoyed being up where Winterfell was set. It was up on the top of a mountain in a place called Cairncastle. It was a very stormy day, and you could literally watch the weather fronts coming in, and the clouds seemed to be circling the top of the mountain. Magical.
Do615: What is life like on set?
KN: I love being on set. The filming can be exacting and grueling, hence the finished product is so good, and the cast has really bonded - the crew also actually. The starts are immensely early, and it can involve a lot of waiting around… but that’s life on any show. It’s nice to watch what’s happening even in the parts of the scene that the camera isn’t on you. It gives a flavour of how the overall scene is going to play, and look…so it’s definitely a worthwhile thing to do. But, as I said…it’s a huge family, and I look forward to seeing and working with them each year.
Do615: You have shared the stage with artists from Scissor Sisters to Mylo and Calvin Harris to Alphabeat. But what do you enjoy more - acting or making music?
KN: That’s a really tough question. I truly love both of them, and I’m so lucky to be able to do both! Acting is rewarding when you see the finished product, get feedback from the fans, or when you manage to fine tune your performance in a scene and you just know you have hit the right spot. But with DJing and Music performance, they are right there is front of you - responding to every beat, hand movement and even sometimes, facial expression. It really is a lot of fun and definitely more intense and immediately gratifying. I can’t pick.. and luckily, there is no rule that says I have to…except the clock, maybe.
Do615: How did you get into ‘rave’ culture and what’s the scene like in Ireland?
KN: Like most DJs I guess, I got into it by being a prolific club-goer. I always loved to watch the DJs doing their thing, but even though I had a background in music, I never imagined myself doing it, as it always seemed like a lot of pressure and responsibility. But when it happened, it fit like a glove and I actually liked the fact that it was all down to “you.” [In Ireland] The dance music scene is OK, I guess. Belfast is still finding its’ feet as an international destination, but is being held back by a Dickensian local government who are extremely inward looking and shortsighted in the daft decisions they make…wait, that’s a WHOLE other interview. haha.
Do615: What music is floating around the set of GOT?
KN: Unfortunately, you can never be sure when something is being recorded…and it’s sometimes easy to miss the “QUIET ON SET” shouts. So any music you might hear is relegated to ticking sound of headphones.
Kristian Nairn will perform a DJ set at Anthem on Friday, December 12.

We had such an awesome time with our friends - Goose Island Beer at Run the Jewels. The whole venue was repeating every line from Run the Jewels & were completely engaged with the performance. We are assuming the duo was so impressed by Nashville’s response to RTJ2 that they decided to run a free leak the next night.

Live on the Green featuring Cage the Elephant, Delta Spirit, and JOHNNYSWIM
September 4, 2014
Photos by Amber Davis
An unforgiving sun blasted Public Square Park on Thursday night but that didn’t keep the record-setting crowd from filling the lawn before 6 p.m. They came early to claim their spot but they hadn’t come to just listen to the music, they came to be a part of the show. For the first time in the festival’s history, Lightning 100’s Live On The Green was kicking off a three-day finale.
Opening with a soothing hum, Nashville’s JOHNNYSWIM eased into the evening like a snake into the water. Slick and fluid, their vocal acrobatics tied a knot of adoration for their craft. Husband and wife, Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano sang with passion and clever wit. They pulled the crowd together on inside jokes and poured themselves into every lyric.
“We will give you everything we’ve got and we hope you have as much fun as we do,” said Abner, flirting with the crowd. Then, moving over to his wife, he leaned in close to feel Amanda’s voice spill over the microphone. “We’re the diamonds, diamonds, rising about the dust,” they sang.
Amanda stared back at Abner, her smile half cocked and her eyes sparkling with mischief. They launched into a medley of “Home” wrapped around “Jackson” by Johnny and June. And what started with a whisper had now ended with a roar.
As Delta Spirit took the stage, the sun politely ducked behind the metro courthouse and lead vocalist and guitarist Matthew Vasquez greeted the crowd. “Thanks for inviting us to your block party,” he said, grinning.
From the overlook towers on the north side of the park, I could see just how grand this party had grown. By then, concertgoers had spilled over Union Street, across 3rd Avenue, and up Deaderick Street. Not bad for a steamy Thursday night that hadn’t yet come to a crescendo.
Ripping into their set, Delta Spirit delivered unexpected rhythmic explosions and challenged the surging mass of bodies to keep their hands in the air as Matthew and team tore through their brand of California rock and roll.
“Throw all of those glow sticks up here!” he howled, as the stage lights were cut to black. His request signaled a cosmic show and an assault of green glow sticks, courtesy of Regions’ Bank.
By now, the crowd’s energy had turned up to 11 – perfect timing for Lightning 100 DJs Wells Adams and Justin Hammel to announce the main event, Cage the Elephant.
Lead guitarist Nick Bockrath took the stage alone, teasing the rampant mass with a Latin guitar lick. But within moments, the rest of the band joined him, beckoning deafening cheers from the crowd. Draped in a black, mesh cape, lead singer Matt Shultz twisted his lean frame like a wire, bending and writhing with controlled chaos as he whipped his admirers into a manic frenzy.
“Come a little closer then you’ll see,” Shultz sang as he danced across the stage and the fans obeyed, pressing their bodies so tightly forward that they tested the strength of the metal barricades.
At one point, Shultz dove into the crowd to ride on a sea of hands, his microphone crackling with feedback as everyone begged for more. Security finally managed to pluck him back onto the stage, and Shultz paused for a moment to take it all in. “You guys never cease to amaze me” he said. “I’m stunned right now.”
And so were we, for this night set a new watermark. Lightning 100’s Live On The Green three-day finale was officially off and running and I, for one, can’t wait to see what comes next.
