So this article is important -- because the wealth that is leaving across the continent of Africa is a significant hindrance to the development and livelihoods of the citizens of the many countries discussed: tanzania, guinea, congo etc. What would be wrong to assume, however, is that it’s only African leaders (or Russians) who are conducting these types of business deals. What we’ve seen is that geography between offshore jurisdictions has a strong connection to certain countries. Are you North American? You’re probably hiding your wealth in Cayman Islands. Are you British? It’s the British Virgin Islands or the Channel Islands. Panama has different links -- so we need to make sure that we don’t assume our politicians/businesses are better than African or Russian ones. The geography just benefited them by not yet exposing them.
