I wanted to do a quick post on my current set up. I’ve kind of played around with several types of palettes, and I keep reverting back to the first simple hard plastic one. I think it’s this one, but I could be wrong.
The biggest problem with this one is that it does dry out and I probably do waste a good amount of paint. The reason why I keep going back to it is because it’s SO easy to clean, and since I’m such a messy painter, I need to have an easily cleaned palette. It’s also claimed to be water tight, although I have had some paint drip into my bag. :| The paint stays relatively wet inside, but if it is too wet, the paints will slide all over and create quite a muddy mess if you aren’t careful.
I’ve tried the sta-wet palettes which are nice, but I don’t like having to waste so much of the paper. That one also isn’t water tight so I would make a mess trying to carry it around.
I do have a friend that has rigged his own with a water tight tupperware container. It’s pretty nifty, and I might look into it some more later, but I just still would rather have a white surface that is easily cleaned.
I also use this little brush cleaner. It’s such a perfect size to haul around, although I do admit it’s pretty pricey for what you get. I do need to clean it daily, but like I said, I’m a messy painter. It also has not leaked so far!
I have a million brushes that I haul around in a fancy carrying case. It definitely makes me look more pro, which is just an added perk, not my goal lol! The reason I use it is to keep my brushes from getting all bent up and ruined, and it’s also really handy to have them organized when you need to work fast.
Of all the brushes I have, I tend to use only three. A round, a larger flat, and a smaller flat (or filbert). To work fast, I block everything in the large flat, then I work a little smaller with the filbert, and then the detail work with the round. You’d be surprised how much detail you can get from a single round brush!
Be sure to take a spray bottle. It’s a MUST HAVE if you don’t have a sta-wet palette. I constantly am spraying down my paints.
Lastly, I use a watercolor paper moleskine. No particular reason, other than I’ve always thought they were fancy looking. I have not been disappointed with the one I used but then again I don’t really mind any water color paper. I have a pocket sized one too but I prefer the larger one.
Ok, hope that helps someone that’s diving into gouache! I am still such a newb, and don’t even feel like I should be giving any advice...but I do think some of the products are nice to have. :)
