Tender Souls
Steve Harrington x sensitive!reader 800 words
Hurt/comfort + Established relationship
After a careless comment leaves you questioning whether you feel too much, Steve reminds you that your tender heart never needed fixing, it was one of the many reasons he fell in love with you
Steve had started noticing the pattern before you did, it wasnโt obvious, not to anyone else anyway. You laughed easily, smiled at strangers, and apologized whenever youโd thought you hurt someone. But Steve knew the difference between your real smile and the one you wore when your feelings had been bruised.
It usually happened after someone made an off handed comment. โItโs just a joke.โ Little things everyone forgot five minutes later, you never did.
You stopped by Steve's work only to bring him lunch, he kissed your forehead, stole half your muffin, and declared it the best part of his shift. Everything had been perfect, until a customer laughed.
You had been minding your own business, and decided to help a customer with a question they had. โOh, sweetheart.โ He chuckled. โYouโre one of those girls who looks like sheโd cry if someone raised their voice.โ
You blinked, caught off guard, but he laughed again, completely oblivious. โI was only kidding.โ
Your forced smile appeared instantly. โOhโฆyeah.โ Steve looked up just in time to see it, the practiced smile, the way the light behind your eyes dimmed just enough to make him unable to focus on anything else.
A few minutes later, you insisted you were going home. โItโs okay.โ You promised him. โIโve got dinner with my parents anyway.โ
Steve didnโt believe you for a second, and two hours he knocked on your bedroom window. After three taps and a pause, your curtain shifted.
โSteve?โ He climbed in with the grace of someone who definitely had done this many times before.
โI brought snacks.โ He held up two plastic bags with that lopsided smile of his, eyes gleaming with love.
You couldnโt help but shake your head and smile, the lines in your face deepening and pulling him forwards. โA real one this time.โ He whispered to himself, you heard it anyway.
You sat on the bed while Steve unpacked his emergency supplies. A chocolate bar, packet of gummy bears, your favorite blanket heโd stolen from his own house because it was softer.
Halfway through the romance movie he put on, you curled into his side. His fingers absentmindedly traced circles across your arm. โYou wanna tell me what happened?โ Steve finally broke the silence.
You hesitated, talking about your feelings was harder than feeling them. โIt was stupid.โ You shrugged.
โHey, nothing about you is stupid.โ Steve lowered his voice into a soft tone you loved.
You looked down. โThe customer today. He said I looked like Iโd cry if someone yelled at me.โ You swallowed thickly, willing yourself to get through your words. โAnd then he laughed.โ
Steve remained silent, letting you express your vulnerability. โAnd I know he didnโt mean anything by it, I just hate that people can always tell.โ You sighed.
His brows knitted together. โTell what?โ
โThatโโ your voice became embarrassingly small. โThat everything gets to me. I wish I wasnโt like this.โ
At the last sentence, Steve turned to you completely. โI donโt.โ He said firmly, brushing your hair behind your ear.
โYou know what I see?โ He asked.
โWhat?โ You stared into his brown eyes that were so close to yours.
โI see someone whoโs more in touch with their emotions than anyone else could ever be.โ He said so honestly, you blinked up at him already feeling tears blur your vision.
โYou feel things deeply.โ He continued, voice quiet like you were a startled deer. โYeah, it means the hurt hurts more.โ
His lips tugged into a small special smile. โBut it also means the good things feel bigger too.โ
You looked away, breath hitching. โI donโt know.โ
Steve gently nudged your chin back towards him. โYou get excited over the smallest things, you cry during happy endings because itโs all youโve ever hoped for, you love people with your whole heart without asking for anything back.โ
His gaze softened even further. โYou notice everything about everyone because you care.โ He laced your fingers together.
A shaky laugh escaped you. โSometimes I wish I cared less.โ You admitted.
Steveโs expression fell, to him, he never wanted you to change. You were his sensitive girl and he loved you for it. โBut if you didโฆโ he murmured. โYou wouldnโt be you.โ
Silence fell over you two again, warm instead of uncomfortable. โI love you because of how deeply you feel. You remind me that itโs okay to not keep things buried down.โ
Your breath caught, sympathy filling you from the inside. โYou never once made me feel like I had to hide how Iโm feeling.โ His eyes searched yours. โAfter everything Iโve been through, you know how rare that is?โ
He rested his forehead against yours. โSo donโt let one stranger convince you that your heart is something to be ashamed of.โ
A tear escaped you despite your best efforts, groaning as you hid your face in his shoulder. โIโm literally crying again.โ You huffed.
Steve chuckled as he wiped it away. โI know.โ He cooโed, holding your face gently between his hands.
โYou were trying to make me stop.โ You raised your brows, furious at yourself.
โNo,โ he corrected again, pressing a kiss to your temple. โI was trying to make you realize you never had to.โ
warnings: concussion, memory loss trope, fluff, injuries,
When your boyfriend wakes up with a concussion, with no clue who you are, he immediately starts flirting with the pretty girl sitting beside his hospital bed
The first thing Steve heard when he woke up was your voice. โSteve?โ Spoken soft and carefully, like you were afraid speaking any louder would scare him.
His eyelids fluttered open, the fluorescent lights overhead made him squint before his gaze slowly settled on the person sitting beside his bed.
It was a girl, a really, really pretty girl at that. He blinked once, then twice to confirm he wasnโt in some dream. โHi.โ He exhaled.
Your face immediately lit up, leaning just a bit closer. โStevie.โ
You reached for his hand, but Steve instinctively pulled it back an inch, more confused than frightened. โโฆDo I know you?โ
The room went silent, Robin who had been leaning against the wall with crossed arms let out a squeak. โUh-oh.โ
You stared at him for a second, before a laugh bubbled out of you. โAre you joking around with me?โ
He frowned apologetically, everything in his mind just felt so fuzzy. โIโm sorry, I feel like I should know you.โ
You shook your head, still smiling despite the slight concern sitting in your chest. โObviously you know me, Stevie.โ
He studied your face like he was trying to solve the worlds hardest puzzle. Your eyes that held something almost similar to affection, your contagious smile, the way you looked at him like youโve known him forever.
Even after racking through his memories, the ones that still remained at least, nothing came up. Then his eyebrows slowly lifted. โAre you an angel?โ He blurted.
You blinked, mouth agape. โWhat?โ
โI mean,โ his cheeks flushed, for a second he had thought he was dead, that was the only explanation as to why a beautiful girl like you was standing above him. โYouโre really pretty.โ
Robin groaned, this was a romantic movie she had not signed up for. โOh god.โ
Steve ignored her completely. โI think Iโd remember someone as special as you.โ
Your smile only grew, ducking your head shyly. โYou think so?โ You whispered.
โI know so.โ He nodded seriously. โThereโs absolutely no chance Iโd forget a girl like you.โ
You bit your lip to stop yourself from laughing, Robin snorted so hard she nearly doubled over. Steve looked between you two confused. โWhat?โ He still didnโt understand what was so funny.
You tilted your head at him mischievously. โSo, what do you think weโre doing here?โ You randomly asked.
He glanced around the hospital bed before turning back to you. โAre we on a date?โ He guessed.
You couldnโt hold it back anymore, losing your cool as laughter flowed out of you. โItโs aโฆpretty weird place for a date though,โ he mentioned.
You wiped a tear from your eye. โTheyโre not exactly romantic.โ You added.
Steve smiled sheepishly. โBut did it work?โ
โDid what work?โ Your brows pulled together.
โThe flirting.โ He finished like it was obvious. Even while concussed, he still fell back into his player ways.
He really was putting on a show for you. โYeah, Stevie. Youโve still got it.โ You reassured.
He quietly celebrated with a tiny fist pump against the blanket. โNice,โ he praised himself. You finally reached over and gently took his hand, this time, he only stared at you with wide brown eyes.
His fingers immediately curled around yours before he looked down at them. โSo,โ you started, knowing the reveal would send him into an absolute frenzy. โIโm your girlfriend.โ
His mouth actually fell open, features frozen with shock. โNo way.โ
โMhm,โ you hummed back, not bothering to hide the amusement from your face.
โYou mean to tell me,โ Steve backtracked. โThat Iโmโโ he pointed at himself. โDating you?โ
โLast I checked, youโre my boyfriend.โ You shrugged.
Steveโs gaze studied your face, looking for any hints that you were fooling him, then landed on your joined hands again, then back to your face. โIโm your boyfriend.โ He repeated. โI asked you out?โ
โAnd you were very nervous in doing so.โ You stated. โBut I accepted anyway.โ
Steve looked at you with an astonished smile. โI mustโve been the luckiest guy alive.โ He shook his head.
โYou still are.โ He smiled so brightly at your words, it made your heart ache.
A minute later, after the nurse finished checking his pupils and stepped out again, Steve quietly scooted over in the small hospital bed, wincing only a little.
โWhat are you doing?โ You asked.
โMaking room for you.โ He pointed out, peeling back the blanket.
โIt wonโt fit the two of us.โ You sighed, even though you wanted nothing more than to cuddle up to him.
He patted the mattress, still not convinced. โI might not remember you.โ His voice softened. โBut I know I feel better when youโre close.โ
There wasnโt an ounce of hesitation in his voice, only clear, honest certainty. You carefully climbed onto the edge of the bed beside him without another word, trying not to jostle his shoulder.
The second you settled, he made a happy noise of contentment. โYup, this feels right.โ He nodded.
You rested your head lightly against his shoulder. โIt does?โ You whispered.
Steve intertwined your hands again, the touch was more comforting this time than surprising. โI donโt remember loving you.โ Your heart squeezed.
โBut,โ he murmured. โI remember what it feels like to love you.โ
You looked up to find him smiling at you with the same hopelessly in love expression heโd always worn. Lifting yourself slightly, you press a gentle kiss against his forehead.
The memories would come back soon enough, but until then, Steve was enjoying falling in love you all over again.
Robin has a lot of those, "what did girls see in this doofus" moments with Steve, but the only time(s) she almost kind of understands is when he masterfully parallel parks.

Mike Wheelerโs basement was like solitude for your group of friends. A place hidden from monsters, evil spirits and every other thing that lived inside nightmares. It was safe and happy and incredibly messy.
Tonight is movie night and thereโs never a movie night where the group isnโt complete. Along the couch sits Mike and El, fingers laced tightly, almost scared they were going to be ripped apart. Beside them in a similar manner, sat Lucas and Max โ she was tucked cozily in his side as she fiddled with the bracelet on his wrist.
Resting on the lounge chair, Robin sprawled her body across the furniture โ one arm lazily yanking Hollyโs new, and now stolen, yo-yo back and forth. Nancy and Jonathan sat on the floor beside each other, lost in conversation between themselves.
Dustin sat cross-legged on the floor next to the couch, leaning back on a thick pillow. His fingers moved animatedly as he talks, face squished into that sweet smile that engulfs his entire face.
And that leaves you and Steve. Youโve sunken into the smaller love seat together, attaching yourself into his side while his arm drapes across the couch behind you, the tips of his fingers tracing tiny shapes along your shoulder.
Despite the closeness of everyone in such a small space and just how loud everyone talks over each other, itโs perfect. Peaceful.
Thereโs an intense conversation that Dustin, Lucas and Steve are engrossed in about whether or not a DND campaign during hellfire called for more strategy than a basketball game.
Steve and Lucas were very much against the idea.
Mrs. Wheeler comes down the stairs then with a wide smile on her face, carrying a large tray of snacks.
โAlright, Iโve got all the goodies and snacks you guys will need for your whole movie marathon!โ She says sweetly, gently placing the tray on the table in front of the group.
Itโs filled with various chips, bowls of different candies, pretzels and smaller dishes holding condiments like peanut butter, melted chocolate, and even some fruits.
Immediately, the kids dive in. Chips break and clatter along the wood, candy rolls onto the floor and under the furniture where itโll be long forgotten. You watch as Steve smacks the back of Dustinโs hand when he reaches both hands into two separate bowls of snacks.
โThank you, Mrs. Wheeler,โ You say, looking up at her. Thereโs a quick look of disgust as she watches her son and his friends effectively stuff their faces but thereโs a fondness in her eyes as well.
She looks back at you and places a gentle hand on your shoulder. โOf course. And please, call me Karen,โ
With that, sheโs walking back upstairs. You turn back to the group and the snacks. In the fruit bowls, you notice a small bowl filled with bright red strawberries.
Your favorite.
You moved to reach for one, then paused โ because the strawberries sit in the bowl, completely whole. Maybe it was the sensory issues you swore you didnโt have but there was something about whole strawberries you couldnโt get behind. The juice always dripped down your fingers and the stems always felt too wet to hold onto.
You enjoyed them more when they were pre-cut, ready to be eaten but you didnโt say anything. You gathered just a couple onto a small plate, gently picking the stem off slowly.
Beside you, Steve saw your fingers move from the corner of his eye. He knew you hated eating your favorite fruit this way too, and he also knew just how shy youโd be to actually say anything.
Steve didnโt look away from the conversation as Dustin, with a mouth full of chips, ranted about how basketball was nothing more than putting a ball through a hoop. He kept his eyes trained on the boys while he dug his fingers into his pocket, grabbing his pocket knife and reaching for the plate in your lap.
Your brows furrowed as you watched your boyfriend steal the plate from you. He didnโt look at you, instead he interrupted Dustinโs tangent then.
โYou know what, Henderson,โ He begins, maneuvering the small knife to slice the stem off the strawberries. โIโd like to see you score a game winning basketball three seconds before that buzzer goes off,โ He scoffs, continuing his movements.
Steve hardly looks down at the plate as he finishes slicing the strawberries into twos, just the way you like it. He just keeps arguing with Dustin, gloating when Lucas backs him up.
You, however, canโt take your eyes off him and his movements. Itโs absolute awe youโre filled with โ his gesture that of something he did without you asking and without hesitation.
When he finishes, he swipes the knife clean with a napkin and slides it back into his pocket. Then he looks at you.
โHere, baby,โ He places the plate back in your lap. โNo sticky fingers,โ
With a quick peck to your cheek, his arm is thrown behind your shoulders again and heโs lost back in his conversation. Your heart swells and you stare down at the strawberries, almost too fond to even eat them.
You pick one up easily, no messy juice or mushy stem, and eat it.
It tastes deliciously sweet. Steve continues talking, you continue eating but this gets cataloged deep in your brain as another moment, in a long list, of moments where Steve Harrington was the most perfect boyfriend.
