I finally started reading fengshen yanyi (that book most of the mystics in WO are based on) and in it there are two ways you can tell something is a fox spirit that has shapeshifted:

1. they smell like a wild animal since they still are

2. If you get a young one drunk they struggle to maintain their form

     “You, Shennong, and Nüwa have lended your power to our cause, but what of Susano’o? It would seem he aids or attacks humans in accordance with his needs. Are you familiar with the incident at Wu’s stronghold, Hefei?”

     Fuxi gives an approving nod at the human’s words. Indeed, with every tail of hers they defeated, they got closer to trapping her back in the mirror realm. However, at the mention of Susano’o the optimism in his heart is dampened. 

     He knew far too well the pains he had been causing the humans - that was, after all, the very reason Fuxi and Nuwa had gone their separate ways. Susano’o was prone to the old-fashioned thinking of some mystics. Humans were weak - their lives short, almost worthless, as delicate and impermanent as frost on a blade of grass. He knew not of tactics, or of cooperation, or of human fortitude -- only stubbornness and the strength that levelled all who stood before him. All but the human resistance.

     “I am not,” he says, inviting Lu Xun to enlighten him.

     She remembered nothing - irritating, but to be expected. This would take some time to explain - if that is indeed what she needed to do. Sun Quan had happily taken much of the responsibility for her himself. “I am Nuwa - the mystic charged with maintaining the veil.”

    “Only twice has it torn before now. Once long ago, again when Orochi stole away powerful warriors from their own worlds, and now. However, this time only you have been pulled through.” She looks to Claire, but her question is almost rhetorical, “were you chosen, or was the tear an accident on Orochi’s behalf?”

in  all  of  her  time  spent  within  both  the  wu  encampment  &&  now  with  the  coalition  forces  ,  she’s  heard  whispers  regarding  the  so  called  MYSTICS  —  divine  beings  similar  to  those  hidden  within  the  pages  of  her  beloved  mythology  tomes  back  home  ,  gifted  in  both  the  art  of  war  &&  ascendancy  of  mankind.  at  first  ,  she’d  found  it  most  difficult  to  believe  ,  but  the  GODDESS  woman  &&  her  mesmerizing  aura  is  almost  impossible  to  disregard  —  hence  why  she  pauses  for  a  brief  moment  ,  contemplating  an  answer  before  allowing  it  to  fall  from  her  lips.  ❛  i  —  have  we  met  before  ?  i  feel  like  i  know  you. ❜

     Pale lips quirk into a weary smile. In all her years, she had tired of explaining herself. This was the human who fell through the veil, that is where Nuwa had seen her, as she slipped through her fingers. Yet unlike the last time Orochi attacked humanity, she was the only one. He had not summoned the warriors of the Sengoku Jidai but come to the Three Kingdoms, and dragged this woman from her own time alone. Nuwa needed to find out why.

     “We have crossed paths before. You are the woman who fell through the veil, yes? —did you see anything there?”
