i was reading a section in bell hooks’ “all about love,” which incisively discussed child discipline and abuse in the context of lovelessness in one’s family of origin, “the original school of love,” as she puts it. the section reads: “Many men in our culture never recover from childhood unkindnesses. Studies show that males and females who are violently humiliated and abused repeatedly, with no caring intervention, are likely to be dysfunctional and will be predisposed to abuse others violently (p. 23-24).”
upon retrospect, it’s a no brainer, right? the idea that if you had an abusive parent, you grow up to be abusive, too. the whole “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” adage.

someone said love is learning how to become softer + stronger at the same time.
still healing. still growing.
✨malu // protect. shelter. house. secure.
“The symbolism depicted on a tatau or malu represents a covenant between a Samoan and his or her way of life. It is "O Mea Sina." It is sacred. The word malu means protect, shelter, security. Malu also means house. The woman is therefore seen in Samoan culture as the protector and shelter of the children, the family, and the village. She is the giver of bloodlines." - Zita Sefo-Martel
