*Leasing a small apartment in Chicago wasn’t how Miriam had always envisioned her newly-free life all these years, but it’s the pitstop before Boston, and that’s all that matters. Well, that and the fussing infant on the floor with her, staring her in the face with a look of frustration. Or maybe focus? Constipation?

The few weeks she got to spend getting parenting tips from her own folks in person were helpful, but still not enough to glean what kind of face her son is making at her. He’s got lovely eyes, she thinks with a grin, blue like Gino’s, and she covers the child’s eyes with her hand to get a reaction. No fuss, just giggles, bubbly and squeaky, and she pulls her hand away to see his pretty blue eyes again and rub her nose to his.

As he slithered on into the apartment, body achy and sluggish from a hard day, there wasn’t much a high school graduate with no real job experience that he can actually talk about could do, so they had him working construction to get by.

Never again would he think of construction workers as douches that just sit around catcalling women. His body was fucking spent.

He glides on over to the couch and flops unceremoniously, a small happy sigh escaping him at the sound of Allen’s cooing.*

*When she hears the lock rattle and the door open, she turns to her tired fiance with a warm smile, though not wholly without the sense of guilt she’s carried around since he started working here. She’s spent the last eleven years earning her own way, and now the burden of supporting both of them and Allen is left to Gino… No one wants to hire a new mother who has to tote her baby around, and neither Gino nor Miriam will allow themselves to leave Allen in someone else’s care if they absolutely don’t need to.

Still, she finds herself wishing she could help ease Gino’s tiredness at the end of the day and the aches in his body that come from a career of intense labour and no respawn or brilliantly advanced medical technology. The best she can give is a bright smile to greet him at the end of each day, a meal, and their son and herself beside him on the couch.

So she scoops Allen up and takes a seat beside her lover, placing a soft kiss on his cheek.*

Literally flinging himself out of the car and running off towards the and in. A few seconds later he’s barreling out followed by a couple of nurses with a wheelchair.*

*For a fleeting moment, Miriam panics when Gino runs into the hospital without her; there’s no way he actually forgot her is there? Her hand is on the door handle, ready to follow after him, when a long, sharp contraction swells, and she cries out, finding herself involuntarily pushing down. It’s a sensation she finds a little similar to the uncontrollable heaving contractions that come with vomiting, and the comparison isn’t what she wants right now.

By the time Gino returns (and blessedly, accompanied), Miriam’s in tears and shaking, hair plastered to her face. Whatever confidence she had over walking and bearing intense pain in the face of ten years of industry service is pretty much exhausted now as her fiance and the two nurses help move her to the chair.

If nothing else, she has the dignity to bear her pain less noisily around others as she rushed into the building.*

*On the contrary, Gino had not forgotten her at all. If only she had seen the spastic flailing and bellowing he did when he found the first nurse he could she would have quite the laugh if she weren’t in excruciating pain.

He can’t do much anymore, now everything is out of his hands. He can only watch as they help his wife into a wheelchair and cart her into the hospital and hurry towards an elevator.

As he chews nervously on his lip, he briefly ponders what more he could do.*

*Miriam panics when she notices that her fiance hasn’t followed her and her entourage into the elevator, and in her pained and worried state, it doesn’t occur to her that finding the maternity ward shouldn’t be too difficult. She grabs the hand of one of the nurses rushing with her and chokes out, “My husband!" only to be reassured that the ward is easy to find.

As she’s assisted up on the bed, though, she finds herself hoping he can make it up here… that he wants to be up here with her. The thought’s cut short though as her head falls back with a miserable cry, and her legs are propped up in preparation.*

*Gino stops in the lobby, staring at the phone, wondering if he should stop and alert Willie or Isaak.. Or somebody who could help him calm his nerves.. Christ, what a crazy event this was.

So he hurries to the stairs, not intention on wasting time with the elevator.. That appears almost seconds before he hits the steps, though he was too busy to notice.*

*He slides out of bed, almost shattering both his ankles in his hurry, but no time to give a damn about that now. He’s thundering through the house.. Pajamas and all, towards the exit.*

*It’s funny that she finds herself grateful now for all those heavy labour chores she was tasked with at the base; hell, she’s grateful for her years in the industry in general right now. It’s making coping with this kind of pain and still walking a much easier task than she suspects it would be otherwise.

It’s still not an effortless stumble over to the door, nor is the awkward squat crouch she performs to pick her bag up from the floor. She still makes good time out to the car, grateful, not for the first time since she’d lived at her parents’ house, that the house had only the ground floor. Breathless, dripping sweat, and keeping her teeth grit hard, she clambers into the passenger seat.*

*He asks, despite the fact that her face is more than enough to convince him, he buckles her up and then puts his on at sonic speed before almost peeling out of their driveway.*
