Felt like sharing more of my canned episode ideas so here’s another one! Kind of a crappier doodle this time because I’m tired.
This is actually another one of them kind of canned but maybe not really episodes though, so I might keep this one if I can tweak it juuust right but so far I’ve been leaning more towards not worth the effort so we’re going with that.
In this episode of Future City during an early morning Subject overhears Ms. Degree singing to herself in her room, which before this point she has never heard before, and thinks it’s absolutely fantastic and just has to tell her. So she does the minute she comes out of her room.
During her rush of compliments she asks why Ms. Degree never did anything special with her singing voice if she sang so well and Ms. Degree tells her that she just didn’t want to. Subject CANNOT believe that when she hears it and tries to push Ms. Degree into doing something with it now since it’s “not too late”.
What happens through-out the episode eventually leads to the image you see up above. Ms. Degree begins to gain popularity because of her voice and Subject acts as her agent, barely allowing any room for opinions or comments on Ms. Degree’s part.
What happens at the end of the episode is probably pretty predictable. Ms. Degree gets fed up with the whole thing and kind of breaks down in a way? Like, she lets Subject know the more detailed version of why she didn’t wanna become a singer and it’s because she knew she wouldn’t be happy doing it, and that fact hadn’t changed. That kind of lifestyle just wasn’t her thing.
Subject still doesn’t understand how Ms. Degree could let something like that really good singing voice, in her own words, “go to waste” like that, and this gets to the lesson of the episode.
Just because you're good at something, doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what you should pursue. Especially if it’s not something you really enjoy doing.
If you were really good at tying shoes you wouldn’t wanna become a professional shoe lacer, right? Instead you would pursue and put time into what you loved doing. Not that Ms. Degree didn’t like to sing, she loved singing. But it was just something she’d rather keep to herself.
After their heart to heart talk, they quit the singer life and go back to normal, but with a little bit of a twist. A twist I actually don’t want to reveal. Even though this episode might not happen, there is still the off chance that it will and the twist is important to the continuity so, sorry!
The reason why I don’t want to keep it is because the episode feels a little out of genre for me? Like it’s not something that belongs in the show. It kind of does, but at the same time, it’s kind of silly. And not silly in the good way. I mean my goodness how can you take Ms. Degree seriously in that outfit?
I dunno. Whenever I think of this episode, something just feels off to me y’know what I mean? If not, I’m sorry, It’s hard to put the feeling into words.
I like the lesson the episode gives, and of course I love the edge it adds to the story, but at the same time, I feel like I could just do this episode differently.
This episode is just a one hit wonder indeed.
