WHATâS GOING ON IN RUSSIA RIGHT NOW
Some of you mightâve heard about the situation with the government vs opposition that weâre dealing with right now, but Iâm gonna give a brief explanation, how it started / how itâs going so to say.
In August 2020 Alexey Navalny, one of the leaders of the russian opposition, was poisoned with a nerve agent âNovichokâ, which was a clear murder attempt. He was transported to Germany to get proper care and over there, while recovering, he and his team had a series of investigations of his murder attempt and basically they proved that it was all organised by the government / FSB (Federal Security Service of Russia / P*tin. Heâs posted videos about his investigation, hereâs the one of him exposing the whole killer team. He also made another video where he undercover called one of the killers and that dude basically confirmed it all, you can watch it here, english subtitles provided on both videos. I know it all feels like some crazy tv show, trust me iâm still speechless.
Anyway, last week he announced that heâs ready to go back home to Russia. Thousands of people came to the airport to show their support, but the bunker grandpa (our joke of a president) was not happy with that and police was everywhere at that airport taking people for doing nothing but standing there. Right when the plane was about to land, they changed the airports (*pretends to be shocked*). They landed and at the customs Alexey was detained by police. The reasons: something that they imagined themselves but also Alexey has a probation and he wasnât checking at the Moscow police station twice a monthâŠ.. since he was in Germany recovering from a murder attempt.
The next day they somehow held a court hearing right at the police station which is literally against the law and heâs being arresting for 30 days. And that gives everyone a push. In his videos he asks people not to protest for him but to protest for themselves and their right to have a voice and for that voice to be heard and not be murdered and, if youâre not dead, be jailed because you have a different opinion. For years our country has been literally degrading, swimming in the corruption and lies just so Mr. Poo has his throne. Elections are being forged, at this point everyone knows about it but they frightened people enough to not say a word. The whole world thinks so low of us or scared of us because of the power that the Tsar holds and smart, reasonable people here are so fed up with that.
And the final part and what was the last drop of patience for lost of people here, Navalnyâs team posted a whole film-investigation about the palace P*tin owns at the coast of the Black sea which was built with the stolen money. Just a few highlights about that palace: the approximate cost of it is around 100 billion rubbles / $1,4 billion, the size of it is over 17,6k square meters, it has tea/wine houses, wine gardens, amphitheatre, a hockey rink, casino, furniture with millions on price tags, hookah bar, bedchambers with jacuzzis, and peopleâs personal faves, aqua disco, $2k toilet brushes with toilet paper holders, a pole at the hookah bar and a room for dirt. You can watch the whole video here, trust me you wonât regret it. Itâs smashing all the views records.
Just in comparison to the cost of only that palace, our pensions for people of age are around 10k rubbles / $130, our standard salaries are around $300 a month and that if youâre lucky, in the regions it can be twice less. During the pandemic the government gave people n o t h i n g that couldâve helped even a tiny bit. But golden toilet brushes at the Black sea cost are always provided.
Tomorrow, January 23rd, there are going to be mass protests all across the country where people want to show their civil position, to scream for the rights that are being taken away from us with every day passing with more and more ridiculous laws, to show support to Alexey and his family and ask for his freedom, and just to show that people want to see their homeland get justice, respect and love it deserves. Chances of things getting messy are very high since the government doesnât allow us to have peaceful protests (unless its allowed protests which likeâŠthey never allow them so hereâs another way of silencing us). Iâll be posting things about it as soon as I know, the ways to help and just spread information about what we have to deal with.
For now Iâm gonna leave a link to an FBK site / Anti-Corruption Foundation, which is a non profit organization that investigates corruption cases in Russia. They also have a donation page which could always use some help, especially on the eve of protests (e.g. provide free lawyers to help people get out of police in case of arrests on protests).
We all know tampons and pads are super fucking expensive but the most wholesome part of life is that Iâve never met someone who wasnât willing to give you one when you needed it
Itâs the little things
itâs wild sliding back into depression when youâre self aware from being through it before because your brain starts telling you all these mean things and youâre just like âwow weâre doing this again huhâ
Stop thinking about everything so much, youâre breaking your own heart.
American Children: Hey, can we be murdered a little less please?
Republicans: What the fuck? What about my guns? What about me, a person innocently playing with my death-machines as a hobby? I am the real victim here. Kids these days are so entitledâŠ
When you have depression itâs like it snows every day.
Some days itâs only a couple of inches. Itâs a pain in the ass, but you still make it to work, the grocery store. Sure, maybe you skip the gym or your friendâs birthday party, but it IS still snowing and who knows how bad it might get tonight. Probably better to just head home.
Your friend notices, but probably just thinks you are flaky now, or kind of an asshole.
Some days it snows a foot. You spend an hour shovelling out your driveway and are late to work. Your back and hands hurt from shovelling. You leave early because itâs really coming down out there. Your boss notices. Some days it snows four feet. You shovel all morning but your street never gets ploughed.
You are not making it to work, or anywhere else for that matter. You are so sore and tired you just get back in the bed. By the time you wake up, all your shovelling has filled back in with snow. Looks like your phone rang; people are wondering where you are.
You donât feel like calling them back, too tired from all the shovelling. Plus they donât get this much snow at their house so they donât understand why youâre still stuck at home. They just think youâre lazy or weak, although they rarely come out and say it.
Some weeks itâs a full-blown blizzard. When you open your door, itâs to a wall of snow. The power flickers, then goes out. Itâs too cold to sit in the living room anymore, so you get back into bed with all your clothes on. The stove and microwave wonât work so you eat a cold Pop Tart and call that dinner. You havenât taken a shower in three days, but how could you at this point? Youâre too cold to do anything except sleep.
Sometimes people get snowed in for the winter. The cold seeps in. No communication in or out. The food runs out. What can you even do, tunnel out of a forty foot snow bank with your hands? How far away is help? Can you even get there in a blizzard? If you do, can they even help you at this point? Maybe itâs death to stay here, but itâs death to go out there too.
The thing is, when it snows all the time, you get worn all the way down. You get tired of being cold. You get tired of hurting all the time from shovelling, but if you donât shovel on the light days, it builds up to something unmanageable on the heavy days. You resent the hell out of the snow, but it doesnât care, itâs just a blind chemistry, an act of nature. It carries on regardless, unconcerned and unaware if it buries you or the whole world.
Also, the snow builds up in other areas, places you canât shovel, sometimes places you canât even see. Maybe itâs on the roof. Maybe itâs on the mountain behind the house. Sometimes, thereâs an avalanche that blows the house right off its foundation and takes you with it. A veritable Act of God, nothing can be done. The neighbours say itâs a shame and they canât understand it; he was doing so well with his shovelling. â I donât know what it is like for every person who commits suicide. It seems like they got hit by the avalanche, but it couldâve been the long, slow winter. Maybe they were keeping up with their shovelling. Maybe they werenât. Sometimes, shovelling isnât enough anyway. Itâs hard to tell from the outside, but itâs important to understand what itâs like from the inside.
I firmly believe that understanding and compassion have to be the base of effective action. Itâs important to understand what depression is, how it feels, what itâs like to live with it, so you can help people both on an individual basis and a policy basis.
Recently I began a social media campaign to raise funds for better care for those suffering with mental illness in my local area, but my overwhelming goal was to start a conversation, I even shaved my head so it could serve as a conversation piece. I know depression is fun to talk about and I know I have obviously been bringing it up a lot, but it is so important that we continue this conversation in any capacity possible. Over the last few weeks I have had some of the most honest conversations with the people around me about their own battles, and I appreciate all of those conversations immensely - I know how hard it is to speak about such things and it saddens me to know how much the people around me are hurting. To everyone who has donated I cannot thank you enough, the support I have received has been so phenomenal and I cannot begin to fully comprehend it. We are extremely close to the goal I set of $3000 and I have been assured the money will be spent to ensure the best quality treatment for as many people as possible. If possible, please donate so that when it starts to snow on those around you, there is someone else there to pick up another shovel or a plough and lend a hand.

Self harm doesnât always happen when a blade touches skin.
Itâs skipping meals because you donât feel like you deserve to eat today. Itâs having sex because you want to be used or abused or defiled. Itâs drinking recklessly because you might have the âcourageâ do something stupid. Itâs smoking - not because you need the nicotine - because you know itâs bad for you. Itâs banging your head against a wall when youâre angry. Itâs crossing the road without looking because you lowkey hope a car might hit you. Itâs thinking about all the ways you could break a bone and make it look like an accident. Itâs not taking painkillers because you want to suffer. Itâs taking painkillers in excess because you know itâs dangerous. Itâs walking home the more dangerous way because youâre kind of half hoping youâll get attacked or raped or stabbed. Itâs going for long walks at night and getting chilled to the bone and hoping that you get lost so that you canât find your way back. Itâs seeking out triggering material. Itâs all the stupid little ways you punish yourself for existing.
Sometimes self harm happens when you put effort into depriving yourself of things you like or need, and sometimes it happens when you donât put any effort into doing the things you like or need.
Itâs a pattern of self-destructive behaviour, and it doesnât only happen in one way.
âShe had always wanted words, she loved them; grew up on them. Words gave her clarity, brought reason, shape.â
â The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje | @thelovejournals
some stuff isnât just a trope, you know? in the movies, weâre introduced to women who are âexpertsâ who have trained for years, who live and breathe and are willing to die for whatever the male main character has never even experienced before. and then he takes the reigns and upstages her, instantly, with a little bit of friendly bewilderment because, come on, itâs not antifeminist, heâs just good, heâs standing there having shown heâs actually more powerful than sheâll ever be - and we buy it. and then we go home and when we live and breathe something we still ask ourselves. âam i actually good at this? or is some fool going to walk into this presentation eighteen minutes in and offer a sarcastic and biting correction?â we wait for the man to show up and prove that, despite awards and training and an excellent job position, weâre actually just secretly incompetent.
the trope isnât just setting up for us âthis man is good at what he doesâ â the fact that the trope demands our male hero upstage the woman says: even an incompetent man will always be better than the best woman. he could have upstaged the sage boss or whatever other male in power exists in the movie. but he doesnât. he upstages the woman to earn his pack order because she is, intrinsically, the weakest link. the real fight will be man against man. it always is.
and i wish, i wish it stopped outside of the theater. but the number of men who try (gently) to assure me that theyâre actually better at what i have multiple degrees and years of experience in - it tells me it worked. men are always looking to be the hero, to interrupt, to upstage, to flip the woman on her back and expose her to all your fellow men - see! for someone who has been doing this forever, sheâs just another woman. i am reminded by a man this is called mansplaining. i said âitâs a system of silencing womenâ and he said, âno, itâs just an accident.â in the movie, he sees himself pointing to my equation on the board, having just walked in. âhereâs the flaw,â he says. in the real life, iâm too frustrated to speak. in the movie, heâs inevitably right. elle woods flipping her hair and saying what, like itâs hard? was a funny line. itâs funny because in every other movie, itâs said by a guy.
