there were thousands of systems in the republic and senators for them, it would have been impossible to know them all –– but padmé had put herself out there many times, especially on the battle of geonosis. recognition doesn’t alarm her, even if he seemed… off, the way that he looked at her. “i am,” she confirmed with a nod of her head, offering him her hand. “but i believe you’ve got me at a disadvantage. i don’t know your name.”

“ no, of course not. ”  and he’s likely made an error in continuing with the conversation.  he doesn’t know what to do.   no one will ever believe what he says.  “ sorry,  it’s cal kestis, ”  he says after a beat of hesitation.  “ i’m  --  a jedi. ”  his throat is dry, but it’s the only story he knows to tell.   he does plan to go speak to the council as soon as he can.

“this is horrible news.” onderon was not the first planet to lose faith in the republic and join the separatists, but it seemed like a sudden move given its prior stance of neutrality. padmé stared at the article on the holopad for a moment longer before closing out of it, letting out a quiet sigh. “losing faith in the republic will not bring this war to an end any sooner.”

“   no,  it won’t, ”  cal agrees quietly,  and then,  when he lifts his gaze,  he finds himself abruptly tongue-tied.   he couldn’t say why this face shakes him so much,  even if it is akin to seeing a ghost.  he’d never had any direct dealings with senator amidala, and he doesn’t think his master had either.  he knows that she had died,  after   --   after.   supposedly killed by the jedi,  something he had never been able to believe.  “ you’re... ”  a hard swallow.  “ senator amidala, aren’t you? ”

he had thought long and hard about this,  and he still isn’t sure that he is ready.   he has,  however,  decided that it is the right thing to do.   maybe if he can somehow make them believe him  ( which feels like a long shot )  things can go differently.  maybe he can save them.  is it not his duty to try? 

he misses bd-1. 

“ excuse me. ”  the toe of his boot scuffs the ground gently as he speaks,  and he doesn’t much want to look into the person’s eyes.  “ do you happen to know the latest news on  --  on general jaro tapal? ”  the name is like ash in his mouth,  the thought of facing his master a hard knot in his stomach.  or maybe he should go to the temple, ask to speak with the high council.

hello, i am bell and my defining personality trait is my love for obi-wan kenobi.  pls feel free to hit me up for plots, i am very shy and a little afraid to approach people myself xo 

THE PAST.

cal trained as a padawan under master jaro tapal until order 66.  he managed to escape in large part due to his master’s efforts to save him.  his master was killed by the clones,  and his last words were to ask that cal await the high council’s signal and to trust only in the force.  cal was left traumatized by master tapal’s death for years to come. 

he went into hiding on bracca and was taken in by an abednedo called prauf, who would be his only real friend for years to come.  he worked as a rigger for five years until an incident in which he was made to use the force to save prauf’s life, an act which drew the intention of the inquisitors.  he was saved by cere junda and greez ditrus, and began a journey to rebuild the jedi order. 

THE PRESENT.

cal is stunned when he is torn from the fortress on nur and finds himself on coruscant.  he does not know what has become of his companions, and it takes some time before he understands that he is in the middle of the clone wars once again.  he cannot decide if this is a blessing or a curse from the force, and he’s currently biding his time and trying to work out what he can do, afraid to go to the jedi council and face the people that feel like ghosts to him, the specters that have haunted him for years.
