HOW TO KEEP YOUR BENDING IN QILAI'S WORLD
DISCLAIMER: the Party heavily encourages you not to take anything written in this article seriously. Bending nowadays has become unnecessary and dangerous, able to cause damage both to the society and the bender. Be a responsible citizen, let your bending be removed and let know about those who didn't!
You were born as a bender and for some reason decided to stay one? Doubtful choise, but we don't blame you. Who nowadays doesn't want to be an outcast and cause problems to the society? There are some ways, how you can not only keep your bending, but also master it:
Bribe medical workers. Only works for planned tests, but that's something: now the government doesn't know about your powers! Be careful: most doctors are loyal to our country, and can report you!
Join the police. If you are a waterbender an earthbender, this may be your chance to legally use your magic for the benefit of our society. Since 171 211 AG bloodbenders continue Amon's duty, removing bending metalbenders help to arrest dangerous benders to keep our country safe (Fixed after the dissolution of the Proscriptor Organization in 205 AG). Stay understanding: other citizens may fear and not respect you for your choice. You can't blame them, can you?
Live in a tribe as a hermit. Currently four tribes are known. Moon Village is a small watertribe, located on the South Pole; it was established by benders, who ran away from the Equalists' regime, and its citizens hadn't communicated with the outer world since then. The Swamp tribe is a group of waterbenders living near the Banyan-grove tree; they are hostile to those who get too close to their location, but fear not, our government made sure that the Swamp National Park is well-protected and safe for tourists! Sand tribe is a tribe of sandbenders, living in the desert; their ability to control the environment makes it impossible to capture them, but they are no threat for peaceful citizens and even accept new members. Finally, Sun Warrior tribe is a mythical group of firebenders, still living in their ancient city. Nobody has seen them, and the only evidence of their existence is the mystical disappearance of all architects and builders sent to the Sun Warriors' city. However, all these tribes are horribly uneducated and poor, so think twice!
Pay or join the criminal group. At least this will give you necessary protection, like if you'd joined the Denpur criminal group. But if you're lucky enough, you can get an access to important scrolls and literature, meet bending masters and even get your bending back if it ever gets removed! The latter, however, can be related only to the Scarlet Blossom Organization, while the secret of this phenomen stays hidden. However, you do understand that the connection with any criminal group can lead you to jail, right?
That's all from me, little bender folks, and remember: the Party wishes only the best for you!
are there any lgbt pairings??
Wohoo, first question! Thank you for showing interest and sorry it took so long, I'm still getting used to tumblr ":)
We are fine with any fan pairings, but canonically in Qilai we only have a mlm ship, you can probably guess which one haha (it may become m/w/m ship, or may not... we're still thinking about it). But! We can't wait to show you the prequel, where we have mlm and wlw couples as main characters!!
Meet the final member of the support team, who found another way to make a difference!
Name: Ohiko Kinomura-Xiaoling
Age: 22 (Born in 216 AG)
Gender: female
Bender: waterbender
Sexual orientation: straight
Enneatype: ENFP 4w3
Traits: optimistic, trustful, indecisive
Ohiko is a journalist, writing children stories for the Republic City newspaper. She grew up in a city near Honsin and was going to become an actress, but her university cancelled the program in the middle of her getting a degree. Ohiko wanted to join Qilai, but got rejected as she constantly doubted their goals. In Republic City she becomes good friends with Inami, who she helps to free herself from her fathers expectations.
Fun facts!
Ohiko is an old aquaintance of Akemi and deeply admires her. Akemi unknowingly inspired Ohiko to move to Republic City.
Her father is a former friend of Akemi's and Inami's parents, but their children were unaware of that for a long time.
She does a research to uncover the mystery of avatar Korra's death.
Meet the justiful policeman, who decided not to fight Qilai, but to join them!
Name: Shin Yoshiro (goes by last name)
Age: 24 (Born in 214 AG)
Gender: male
Bender: earthbender, metalbender
Sexual orientation: queer (questioning)
Enneatype: ISTJ 2w1
Traits: righteous, loyal, serious
Yoshiro is a police member, who is responsible for catching Yanlin. He grew up in Republic City, attended police academy since the very childhood and always wanted to spread justice. When he finds out about Qilai, he lets them go, as he finds himself supporting their ideas. Yoshiro decided not to join the team, instead becoming an only ally in the police and provoking changes within the system.
Fun facts!
Yoshiro loves animals and has a dog.
As a policeman, he got to keep his metalbending legal, although Yoshiro himself understands how absurd this rule is.
He kind of likes Yanlin and lets him escape every time. They establish a good relationship eventually...
Meet the local legend and Michi's former best friend!
Name: Yanlin
Age: 22 (Born in 216 AG)
Gender: male
Bender: non-bender
Sexual orientation: bisexual
Enneatype: ISFP 4w5
Traits: easy-going, calm, sarcastic, flirty
Yanlin is a well-known criminal, previously known as Sakurai, a scandalous artist, whose posters almost started a revolt. He was raised in the Republic City orphanage and was a close friend to Michi. He is now a leader of a mysterious criminal group Yoshiro, but his location, actions or plans are unknown. Qilai looked for him on purpose, believing his experience and social position will help them. Although Yanlin enjoys spreading chaos and is always looking for new ways to have fun, he turns out to be not so powerful as expected...
Fun facts!
He has a tattoo of an arrow on his hand, which originally symbolized an airbender's tattoo, but Yanlin thought that a plain, blue arrow is boring and made it black and curvy.
He wears an eye patch to look like his late father, though his eye is okay.
He named his organization Yoshiro in honor of a specific policeman who is responsible for catching him. Was this annoyance or flirting? Who knows...
Meet the 'civil' member of the support team, the constant reminder of why Qilai's goal matters!
Name: Katsuro Ichinosa
Age: 25 (Born in 213 AG)
Gender: male
Bender: firebender
Sexual orientation: pansexual
Enneatype: ENFP 6w7
Traits: initiative, impatient, creative, childish
Katsuro is Kichiro's older brother and the second of four Ichinosa children. He dreamt to become a scriptwriter, but didn't get into the university; he lives with his parents and a younger sister and works as a florist. He wanted to join Qilai, but got rejected, as Akemi considered him useless and weak. Katsuro motivates the main team, reminds them to rest, comes up with good conspiration ideas and sometimes helps Kai with her work.
Fun facts!
Katsuro plans to make a movie about Qilai. For Qilai not to raise questions during the journey, Katsuro made up a legend about them making an amateur movie right now.
He can't control his bending powers well and has many scars from supressing them.
During the story Katsuro develops a crush on Anko (which is mutual)
Meet Akemi's first ally, who made a great contribution to the mission!
Name: Hakaina (goes by Kai)
Age: 23 (Born in 215 AG)
Gender: female
Bender: waterbender, bending removed
Sexual orientation: lesbian
Enneatype: INFJ 1w9
Traits: quiet, cunning, 'still waters run deep'
Kai is a girl from Honsin, who lives with her grandmother and works in a local library. She is Akemi's best friend from school. Even though she supports Akemi on her mission and enjoys revolutionary talks, Kai didn't join Qilai. Instead, she seeks for useful information in literature, finds books and scrolls on bending techniques and documents Qilai's jorney. She also helped Akemi with her plan at the beginning of the journey.
Fun facts!
After the bending-removing ritual, Kai got strabismus, that's the reason why she keeps her left eye covered. She also dyes her hair black, as they became grey because of the same ritual.
Kai has a crush on Akemi and already confessed during school times. Although Akemi felt the similar way, her feelings were platonic, so she had to reject Kai. Still, they stayed good friends.
So far we're done with introducing the main party, so let's move on to the support team! Meet the one who came up with the whole idea of Qilai!
Name: Inami Yenipan
Age: 24 (Born in 214 AG)
Gender: female
Bender: avatar (airbender)
Sexual orientation: questioning
Enneatype: ENFJ 3w2
Traits: apathetic, unbothered, but acts friendly and lively
Inami is Akemi's twin sister. She grew up in Republic City, but, unlike Akemi, desired to become an actress. However, when Inami accidentally revealed herself as the new avatar, her father Izamu became obsessed with the thought of bringing bending back into the society, and professionaly brainwashed her daughter into thinking this is her main life goal. As the result, Inami became passive and apathetic, being unsure of what she really wants. Right now Inami is a professional actress, but mainly views her status and popularity as a way to gather information about important political events. She is the initiator of the whole existence of Qilai.
Fun facts!
Inami likes observing herself on photos and in movies.
She is the only person who Akemi is afraid of.
She feels herself deeply dependent on her late father, and everything she does comes from the will to make him proud.
Meet the last member of Qilai and *someone's* old aquaintance!
Name: Haru Fong Karato
Age: 23 (Born in 215 AG)
Gender: female
Bender: earthbender
Sexual orientation: bisexual
Enneatype: INFP 6w5
Traits: Tender, erudite, indecisive, can be whiny
Haru grew up in Republic City in a family of state workers, but was considered a disappointment because of her character. Her parents tryed to remove Haru's bending powers too early, what left her poor of health and almost killed her. Haru has studied law in Ba Sing Se and successfully graduated. However, shortly after that she faked her death, hating living her parents' life. When she found out that Akemi, Kichiro, Michi and Anko are in town, she found them herself and asked to join Qilai.
Fun facts!
Haru's hair became naturally blond after the unsuccessful bending-removing ritual. Haru loves her hair and doesn't dye or cut it.
She used to go to the same school as Akemi and Inami and became good friends with the latter (what cannot be said about Akemi).
She is obsessed with cleaning.
Haru has a secret crush on Akemi.
Lore? Lore!
So as already mentioned, Amon defeated avatar Korra... How exactly did that happen?
In the 1st season of LOK there were multiple situations when Amon could've removed Korra's bending, but for some reason chose not to. In our version, he took one of those chances and captured Korra, this way showing the world his power and making more scared civilians support the revolution. Of course, some tried to rescue Korra, but were unsuccessful for many reasons (like Team Avatar wasn't united enough, Korra herself was still untrained...).
How did the world react?
At first, the Equalists didn't have any allies outside of Republic City, but soon enough small, poor cities (mostly from the Earth Kingdom) started to support the regime. The Earth Kingdom itself declared Equalist organization to be illegal and cut of the communication with Republic City to prevent another revolution. However, it didn't help, and 4 years later a group of young revolutionaires united with the Equalists to overthrow the Earth Queen. The Fire Nation offered humanitarian aid for oppressed benders and used to take refugees, but a year later the Equalists attacked and the war broke. It lasted 7 years, during that time the Equalists gained more support around the world, what caused the Fire Nation to capitulate. With Water Tribes everything was... interesting. As the power of removing bending comes from bloodbending, Amon needed more waterbenders in his army, so the North Pole was the first place where the Equalists headed. Oficially, they made an alliance with Unalak. In reality, many benders ran away or were brainwashed, and only a small amount of them actually joined the Equalists. To conclude, the world was ready, but it took some time to change.
What happened to Mako/Bolin/Asami/Tenzin/other characters from the show?
To be honest, we weren't focusing on them, so we aren't sure. Tenzin, of course, still tried to unite airbenders after the Harmonic Convergence, but that didn't turn out well.
What happened to Korra? How did she die?
So the Equalists at first weren't sure how to kill a powerful avatar without the avatar cycle causing problems in the future, so they kept Korra captured, slowly making her lose her will to live. Amon planned to execute her, as well as to end the avatar cycle publicly, but something didn't go as planned... This piece of story is planned as a prequel and involves characters not yet presented, so we'll get to it later! *wink*
How do the Equalists remove people's bending powers after Amon's death?
Even when he was alive, Amon considered his regime to last long, so he established a secret state academy, where he tought loyal waterbenders-equalists to bend blood and remove bending; these people were called 'proscriptors' and wore masks to hide their identity. Of course, it was highly forbidden to talk about the nature of bending removing, as oficially it was a gift from a spirit. Later, an infamous scientist named Chen Yuizhe invented a machine for this purpose, and the Proscriptor Organization was dissolved. However, using the bending removing machine can be lethal for small children and people who are poor of health, so the machine is still worked on.
Meet the healer of the team!
Name: Anko
Age: 24 (Born in 214 AG)
Gender: female
Bender: waterbender
Sexual orientation: straight, demisexual
Enneatype: ISFJ 2w3
Traits: Calm, curious, pacifist, 'mom friend'
Anko grew up in Moon village, a small settlement on the Southern pole, far away from civilization, where remaining waterbenders used to hide from the Equalist regime. Anko, her brother Yasu and their friend Tokkani wanted to see the outer world and often travelled to dumps on nearby islands.
However, becuase of Yasu's careless actions, the village got discovered by Equalists, who killed almost every villager, including Yasu and Tokkani. Akemi, Kichiro and Michi found Anko shortly after and helped her to rescue remaining people, as well as to cope with her friends' death.
Fun facts!
Anko is an excellent healer.
Due to growing up away from the modern world, she is bad with technology and fashion. She also is quite superstitious.
She easily gets along with children and eldery people.
Anko has a crush on Katsuro (Kichiro's brother).
Meet Michi, the 2nd and the youngest member of Qilai!
Name: Michiru Asaoka (goes by Michi)
Age: 19 (Born in 219 AG)
Gender: female
Bender: firebender
Sexual orientation: straight
Enneatype: ESFP 3w4
Traits: Passionate, energetic, 'act first, think later' type
Michi was born in a poor family in Republic City and was an only bender among her siblings. Because of her powers Michi's mother sent her to the local orphanage, where Michi met Yanlin, her only childhood friend. Shortly before the planned bending-removing ritual Michi ran away to Fire Nation, where she became a member of a radical gang and helped to cause riots. She became well-known among oppositionists and got a nickname Republic Dragon. Akemi and Kichiro looked for Michi on purpose, beliving her powers will be useful, and managed to convince her to join them.
Fun facts!
Michi's real name is Ryo Noguri, as her parents desperately wanted a son. Michiru is a name of her favorite cartoon character.
Although the color red is Equalists' color, Michi considers it to be the color of fire. Apart from her hair dye, she also wears a lot of red, orange and yellow clothes, showing how proud she is to be a firebender.
She feels guilty for something she had done to Yanlin, but never talks about it.
Meet the first member of Qilai and the only boy in the main party!
Name: Kichiro Ichinosa
Age: 23 (Born in 215 AG)
Gender: male
Bender: earthbender
Sexual orientation: straight
Enneatype: INTP 9w1
Traits: Hard-working, supportive, but clumsy and a bit timid
Kichiro grew up in the countryside with his parents and three siblings. Wanting to support his family unlike two older irresponsible brothers, Kichiro was studying to become a doctor. He met Akemi in Honsin, to where he moved for college practice, and turned out to be a valuable ally.
Fun facts!
Kichiro loves healthy 'green' food, especially watermelons.
He is a geek and collects merch from his favorite movies and shows.
Although being very responsible and hard-working, he used to get bad or average grades at school.
He has a crush on Inami (Akemi's twin sister) due to her being a famous actress.
Meet the main character, the founder of Qilai!
Name: Akemi Hotaru
Age: 24 (Born in 214 AG)
Gender: female
Bender: airbender
Sexual orientation: aromantic asexual
Enneatype: ENTJ 8w9
Traits: Responsible, loyal, but often sassy and apathetic
Akemi was born in Republic City in a family of a famous actress Jisoo Yenipan and a psychiatrist Izamu Hotaru. Unlike her twin sister Inami, who wanted to become an actress, Akemi hated the plastic world their family portrayed. After her father's mysterious death in 228 AG Akemi moved to the coutryside, a place called Honsin, and lived with her grandfather, who taught her martial arts. Surprisingly enough, Akemi herself never wanted to start a revolution or become a group leader. But she had to take that role after reconnecting with Inami, who gave her a very important mission...
Fun facts!
Akemi loves tea, action movies and making sassy comments. She's also good at gardening.
She hates the job of an actor, but still loves the cinema. She used to study and work as a projectionist.
Akemi's favorite color is turquoise, as her father used to associate it with the ocean and freedom. She dyed her hair turquoise for the same reason.
Q&A
Is this an official project? No! Qilai was made fully by fans for entertainment. The lore and characters mentioned in ATLA and LOK do not belong to us in any way.
Will it be a comic, a book or something else? Originally it was supposed to be a comic, but the we unfortunately decided to keep it in drafts for personal reasons. On this page we will publish the story as it is in our heads: main characters and events, random 'filler' scenes, memes and written/drawn pieces of a story.
Do you have any social media in other languages? No. Although there are two people in our team, and for both of us English is not a mothertongue, we decided to run this page in English. You may notice some mistakes (feel free to point out!) and/or foreign writings on arts.
What is the story about? It takes place 70 years after an alternative ending of LOK's 1st season; in this version Amon defeated Korra, making the Equalist Revolution successful. All nations share the same ideology, removing young benders' abilities. Oficially, the avatar cycle has ended... The story follows an airbender Akemi Hotaru and her team Qilai, who are trying to start another revolution, bringing peace and harmony back to the world.
Is there a new avatar in this story? Yes. Equalists did try to end the avatar cycle, but were unsuccessful. However, new avatars stayed quiet, trying to master all elements in a world, where bending is forbidden; they didn't make much a difference, though. Akemi herself is not the avatar, but knows exactly who is.
After 70 years, what does the avatar world look like? We mostly took inspiration from the late USSR. On top of that, every person is now obligated to get tested for bending abilities and, if positive, to have these powers removed. These tests cannot be faked, so some benders bribe medical workers to keep their bending.
Is Qilai connected to other fan-avatar projects? No. We LOVE how creative people get with future avatars, but our story moves in a different direction.
If you want to clarify something else, or feel like we haven't coverend something important, feel free to ask us anything! Also we are new to tumblr, so will be glad to get some advices <3
