one thing i find to be questionable about the overall messaging of harry potter is the focus on getting rid of a sole, single person as the big source of all evil in the world. there’s nothing about dismantling corrupt systems of power that allow said evil person to thrive, which is weird because harry potter does highlight that the ministry is inherently corrupt even before voldemort gets in there

they let lucius malfoy and other death eaters get away with being blatantly shitty people because malfoy has money, while sidelining and discriminating against people like arthur weasley because he doesn’t have the money or clout to oppose them. they use the media to slander harry for calling them out despite him being 100% correct. they harass and belittle mrs figg during the court hearing because she is a squib, despite her testimony being completely valid and correct. the fact that it doesn’t really take much for voldemort to get in and really start fucking things up is telling.

and yet, there’s no focus on changing it. the ministry is what it is and we just have to deal with it, i guess. hermione takes over as minister and we’re meant to believe that by putting a good person in this corrupt system full of people who at the bare minimum let the ministry do what it was doing, everything is sorted and better now.

ultimately its messaging is that people who do big and obvious evil things are bad, but it’s all down to the individual person, if governments and authorities are bad the only recourse is to join them. and that’s bullshit.

Someone’s got a butterfly clip, Ron is wearing a choker, there’s muggles playing with pogs, Spice Girls is playing in the background. Voldemort is wearing a crop top.

It’s simultaneously the worst and fucking best thing you’ve ever seen.
