#deathly hallows

Just a few notes upon completion of Deathly Hallows [*Spoiler Warning* just in case that's still needed at this point, lol]:

*Ron had some really great moments and growth in this book.

*Mrs. Weasely is my hero. Nothing beats the protective fury and love of a mother. Her takedown of Bellatrix is one of my favorite moments.

*Neville is a hero. Full stop. Love how his character grew far beyond the comic relief or bully target.

*Also, so glad Neville and Luna both made it out ok. I was a little worried about their characters' safety in the plot.

*Speaking of, the absence of Luna in the epilogue was majorly disappointing. (Although I have found more details were released after the books, but still.)

* STILL so upset about Remus and Tonks! 😡😭 I should have known poor Teddy's parents were in danger the minute Harry became his godfather. 😰

*I love little Albus Severus. 🥹

*James Sirius, on the other hand, seems to be taking a bit too much after his grandfather, who, let's be honest, was a bit of a jerk. 🫣😆

*Snape not actually being a villain was something I was pretty sure I already knew going into the series, but wasn't completely positive about that fact. That inkling of a spoiler may have given me a little more confidence than I would have had otherwise that things weren't as they seemed, but I still questioned myself on it some, lol. Dumbledore's words to Snape before his death definitely had me thinking that Snape was acting in a way that Dumbledore wanted him to though. I really did love finally getting the whole backstory of his friendship and love for Lily and redemption. 🥺🥹😭

*I feel like it may take me a bit to really wrap my mind around how everything went down and all the little things that came together for Harry to be able to defeat Voldemort in the end. 🤯 Such good connections and story-telling there.

I was doing ok until Harry finally opened the snitch and brought back Lily, James, Sirius, and Remus to be with him at the end. 😭😭😭😭😭😭

As great as Hedwig's theme is, Lily's Theme always hit me ten times harder. An echo of something so powerful and earth shattering. When I first heard it, it snapped into my brain. Even before I learned the title of the song I just sense it aligned with her.

Snape has a hidden arc in the seventh book that we only get the barest glimpse of, and it has to do with his relationship with Dumbledore.

During the events of Half-Blood Prince, Snape expresses a sense of deep betrayal, saying that Dumbledore has used him. But by the end of Deathly Hallows, Snape is protecting his office—the only place where he can exist without pretenses and act in alignment with his true self—with Dumbledore’s name.

What might Snape have experienced as he grappled with his feelings towards the man? Harry, who undergoes his own arc in his relationship with Dumbledore, might provide us with a blueprint:

He yearned not to feel. ... He wished he could rip out his heart, his innards, everything that was screaming inside him. …

“Password?”

“Dumbledore!” said Harry without thinking, because it was he whom he yearned to see, and to his surprise the gargoyle slid aside, revealing the spiral staircase behind.

The path Snape takes, in which he goes from feeling torment to finding something like relief in Dumbledore’s memory, is one I dearly wish we got to see more explicitly. But I suppose it’s a fittingly oblique capstone to their relationship throughout the series, which mainly existed between the lines. And it’s certainly fertile ground for personal interpretations and headcanons and fan works!
