they  leaned  against  the  balcony  lazily ,  taking  a  break  from  the  piled  up  assignments they had waiting in their dorm room ,  finding  it  appropriate  to pull  out  a  cigarette  and  light  it  for  their  own  peace  of  mind .  the  view  was nice , even though they despised english weather  —  certainly more quaint than the apartment they owned back in new york ,  offering  some  sanctity  to  the  constant  stress  of  their  major .  hearing  the  shuffling  of  feet  behind  them ,  already  used  to  being  bothered  between small respites ( whether it be actual friends , acquaintances or general nuisances , it would seem they all do it an equal amount now ) ,  with elias  blowing  a  puff  of  smoke  out  into  the open  before  speaking  up — “ is it important ? ” —   they  ask aloud ,  not  making  a  move  to  look  at  who  was  actually there ,  simply  twirling  the  lighter  between  their  fingertips .

Zafer didn’t mean to interrupt anyone’s balcony brooding time — well, that’s a lie. He absolutely did. Especially hot people who look both miserable and bored.

Something about secondhand smoke and other people’s existential dread always made life feel more truthful.

He didn’t respond right away, either. Just leaned his elbows lazily against the railing beside Elias, uninvited and comfortable like he owned the place, offering nothing more than the glint of a knowing smirk and a slow once-over of the foggy view. Finally:

“Only if you consider unsolicited compliments and light trespassing important.” He gazed sideways to meet the other's eyes, a soft, charming smirk taking over his features. He pulled a sleek silver cigarette case from the inside pocket of his coat — that definitely wasn't pickpocketed from a too arrogant and self-important bastard at a party — and tapped one out, pausing a beat.

“Unless you're planning to gatekeep melancholy and nicotine tonight, in which case, I'll see myself off.” But he didn’t move. Just lit his own, twirling the lighter — also stolen from a hook up in California four eyes ago during Spring Break — once between his fingers before passing it over without asking.

“So, what’s the crisis this time? Academic burnout, identity spiral, or just needed a moment where the walls don’t talk back?”

He didn't really have expectations about Elias checking what was written in the lighter — "smile when you give this back if you wanna fuck". It wasn't his intention, anyway, but he had two options there: it would either break the other's apathy with a snort, or... It would work.

He couldn't be blamed for trying.

Nico sat with his knees hugged to his chest, Nick Cave playing softly in his ears and his unfinished assignment laid out in front of him. Pen clutched in his newly healing hand he continued scratching away at the poem he was working on for his creative writing class. He worked better in his dorm but that was no longer an option due to...circumstances. His roomie had banished him, understandably, from the room when he'd apparently hissed at him like a feral baby raccoon and thrown an box of open cereal at him. In his defense he hadn't had his coffee yet and this assignment was stressing him out. Sue him. He stopped mid pen stroke when he felt another presence nearby and realized that there was someone behind him. And they had apparently been speaking to him without him realizing. "Sorry. What was that?" He asked pulling out an earpod and turning to look at them.

People were the most fascinating when they truly thought nobody was looking.

Zafer stared at the desperate college kid in front of him with the haunted eyes of a perturbed writer, pen unstoppable marring the paper in an attempt to put out the first thing he could. He knew the type very well, writers.

Break a writer's heart, and you'll be killed off in the most disturbing way possible. Or, as did Shakespeare in All’s Well That Ends Well, immortalized in as a "A most notable coward, an infinite and endless liar, an hourly promise breaker, the owner of no one good quality".

"You're Tarantula Boy, aren't you? How's that holding up for you? Any progress?" Zafer slipped easily in his London accent, although he didn't have that much practice with it the last fifteen years, he supposed it was like riding a bike. "What are you writing about? Did you bury anyone with your writing yet?"

Well, if you consider "practice" using it to pick up hot people... Then, yes... He had some practice.

WHERE:  either  dining  hall.  WHO:  anyone  ready  to  shit  on  the  lack  of  flavor  in  england.

       "do  you  think  they'll  serve  something  with  FLAVOR  anytime  soon  or  should  i  risk  expulsion  and  sneak  into  the  kitchen  myself?"  exasperated  &  hungry,  they  were  at  the  end  of  their  rope  with  this  --  one  of  the  battles  they  fought  daily  since  attending  school  here  was  the  lack  of  seasonings  in  the  food.  despite  the  fact  that  riley  had  the  palette  and  diet  of  a  ten  year  old,  they  still  weren't  able  to  get  over  how  tasteless  and  bland  the  food  in  england  was  as  a  whole.  they  had  even  gone  so  far  as  to  make  a  petition  getting  some  of  his  fellow  st.  cutherbert's  to  sign  it.  however,  some  of  them  simply  didn't  know  any  better  –  he  was  convinced  it  was  some  verison  stockholm  syndrome.  "it's  like  they  could  fuck  up  a  piece  of  toast  over  here.  CRAZY  WORK.  at  least  langston  would  get  us  artisan  toast.  definitely…  experimental  --  yes  --  but  they  tried.  " (@langstonstarters)

Zafer had heard the complaint before he’d even fully entered the dining hall — the kind of loud, embittered declaration that could only belong to someone from Langston, someone suffering. He didn’t even bother getting in line. Just slid into the seat across from Riley, plucked a limp, tragically pale sausage off their plate, and inspected it like it had personally insulted him.

“Do you think this even knows what paprika is?” he asked, voice low and conspiratorial, with the right amount of disgust only a privileged person could muster about having below the average food in their plate. He tossed the sausage in his mouth, immediately grimacing at the flavor of nothingness that came with the meat. “Meh, I don’t think so.”

If someone put him on the spot and forced him to tell the truth, he’d say he wasn’t hungry. He’d lie and say he’d eaten before. The truth was something different, another beast he wouldn’t tackle out loud. Like how sometimes he got sick when he saw someone that looked similar to his bio uncle, and that skipping lunch would avoid an unpleasant accident.

“You sneak into the kitchen, I’ll keep watch. If we’re going down for breaking and entering, I’d rather do it over cumin than… this.” He gestured vaguely at the bland tray of food with a dramatic flourish. “Castle Fell’s giving ‘haunted orphanage with a catering budget.’”
