Helen realises he’s going for a kiss a mere instant before his lips brush hers. There is nothing forceful about it, though. Like everything Dale, it is soft, almost cautious, wordlessly telling her that if she doesn’t want this, he will let her go at once. She doesn’t want him to let her go.

It should be easy, slipping back into this, into one another. And in some ways, it is. But love isn’t just a feeling, it’s something you do. And neither of them has ever done it quite like this before.

Five - Carving

She’s moved her bike to the living room, in the hope that having it out there in the open, instead of tucked away in a corner of their room, would motivate her to get back onto it. Not that she’s unhealthy. Truth is, she’s healthier than she’s been in a couple of decades, virtually drug-free, alcohol-free (most days), and rather well-loved. But she’s also well-loved by a man who’s discovered he enjoys cooking good food for her, and no amount of sex can replace thirty minutes of daily biking. There is, of course, the grounding aspect of it, too. She’s not only healthy, she’s happy, in a sort of giddy, electrifying way that sometimes feels just as out of control as her darker moods tend to be. She’d discussed it with Marcia, how it feels like she’s trying to do jumping jacks while standing on something slippery. She’s energised, but not exactly steady, and just as likely to fall on her arse—or flat on her face. “Your TIPP skills aren’t just to help you regulate negative emotions, Helen. They help you no matter the emotion, when it gets overwhelming in its intensity.” And so, on the bike she goes. Pedalling away like she’s possessed to the rhythm of whatever songs she’s put on that day.

There’d been no trace left of the Helen who sat on that desk and connected with millions of people, nor was there a trace of the woman who made the newsroom’s walls tremble and Lindsay’s left eye twitch. She’d been subdued and withdrawn that early morning, her skin almost as pale as her shirt, having awoken in a stranger’s home, barely twelve hours after overdosing on pills. Yet she’d made eye contact with Dale when he kept on speaking to her as if she was just a regular house guest, remembering the manners his mum taught him. She’d seemed taken aback by his nervous ramblings, but she’d been kind about it—sweet, even. That was the moment Dale realised this might be the first time he really met Helen.
