Why should Pagans consider veiling?

 You have seen people of the Muslim, Jewish, and even Christian faith wear some kind of head covering to express their faith and love of God. Have you ever wondered, “Can/Do Pagans do that too?”.

  Whenever you see a photo of the classic Halloween witch, you see her wear a black pointy hat. Every thought deeply into why? Veiling has probably been around longer than you realize when concerning polytheism. In Ancient Rome and Greece, it was quite popular. Even today in Roman polytheism, an adoratio requires a head covering or veil of any sort and the same goes for rituals.

From the photo below, you can see these women from Ancient Greece wore head wraps for fashion as well, but women were expected to cover themselves even so.

 Often because of the heat, himnations were popular (similar to the Roman tunica, or toga), but many pictures and art of the time showed women and men alike continuing to wrap the fabric around their heads.

Can boys veil and still be seen as masculine? I'm a transboy and want to pass but also want to veil?

That’s a tough one. I want to say yes, no qualifiers attached, but we live in a society where masculinity is defined by how far away from femininity it can get. Socially, we’re in the process of changing that perception, but there are still people who will, and do, judge you based on how well you present as your gender.

In the end though, any head covering worn with religious/spiritual intent can qualify as veiling. So, I’d say it depends on how you go about doing it, for how masculine other people perceive you. Bandannas can be seen as masculine, and work perfectly fine for veiling.

I also suggest looking into beanies

Downside(depending on how you look at it???) to veiling like this: it’s super covert, as these are all things that non-religious men will wear. If you’re comfortable wearing something more easily recognizable as a religious form of veiling, then go right ahead :) You may find that it’s not giving you any issue to how masculine you look and feel. I suggest trying some different things, and seeing what you’re comfortable with, and what feels right to you if this is something you’re interested in doing.

could you please explain how to read that pattern for the veil?

Sure thing! I’ll do you one better even, I’ll post a tutorial!

So, starting with this pattern, that I got from willowmoon92 and this post, no directions:

I started by grabbing some scrap fabric I had laying around, a good sized chunk, but nothing outrageous. You could easily do this with a square scarf.

Next, cut it into a square shape, if it isn’t already

Mine isn’t perfectly even because I was still sorting it out, but you get the idea.

Next, I actually folded mine into quarters to make cutting a circle super easy

Once you cut a quarter of a circle through all the layers of the fabric, you’ve got a circle (or close enough) and four pointed bits

Fold your circle in half and figure out where you want your sleeve holes

Figure out center top on your shawl bit, and position one of the triangle pieces so the centers line up. Pin it for reference and to make sewing easier

Repeat with the next section too. Don’t worry about the pointy bit yet, we’re gonna trim that off later. The curved line of the second triangle is going to lay across the outer edge of the first triangle.

Round off all the edges on the hood. Depending on your material you need to go back and hem everything. I didn’t use a hood liner because my material is see through. If you want a hood liner, then attach your triangle bits to each other before attaching them to the hood, and do this so you have two sets of two. Then sew the two hoods together, seams touching. Then you can attach the hood to the shawl-y bit. 

I’m going to hem mine, clean up the edges a bit, and maybe add some lace trim. The hood stays up pretty well on it’s own, but I’m planning on holding it in place with decorative pins when I wear it out. I didn’t put the folds in mine, because I didn’t think it would look good on the see-through material

I’m thinking it was like a cap, but with the middle cut out. or it was twisted over near the ears and fastened with something ^_^

I’m guessing, from the look of the patterns, that a wide, circular headband was probably twisted at that point behind the ears, making that indent and flipping the back upside down.  Or maybe it’s two small pieces of cloth tied together at that point, now that I think about it, since the center strip of the cloth is different in the back.

But, anyways, in our exciting modern time of bobby pins, you could use a wide, circular headband and just bobby-pin it down behind the ears for a similar effect.

Any tips for head coverings?

Research.  Look for styles you like and find out how to tie them. If they are from another religion, you’ll probably want to find out how they feel about “outsiders” wearing their covering. It’s also good to examine your reasoning and desire for covering. A Muslim woman in Walmart put it to me this way: “Unless you’re covering for the right reasons, you might as well not cover”. The woman in question didn’t cover. You might also considering adopting styles from your path’s history. I love Catholic prayer veils and veils in the style the Virgin Mary wore. Ancient Greek women veiled very similarly to the way Indian women do, and if I could every afford a scarf that large I’d try it myself! Also keep in mind, many styles of covering were used by more than one culture/religion. A lot of people have got yelled at for wearing hijab-like coverings and told the were cultural appropriating. While every Muslim I’ve talked to said there was no problem with this, and thus making it not cultural appropriation, and that anyone could wear Hijab, many people forget that the Hijab style of covering was in use long before Islam even existed and they’re not the only group that continues to cover in that fashion. Extremely similar styles were/are popular in Russian and many other Eastern European countries particularly among older women. They’re also very similar to the medieval wimple:  The modernized wimple looks is likewise similar to many Hijab styles, though mostly the tube shaped under-scarf:  . One of my favorite Hijab styles, popular in Pakistan, is similar to they way Indian women veil but also similar to the way some Ancient Greeks, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, and Celts veiled: . Thus said, research, in this case, is your friend.  

Hats and bandannas (tied in “pirate” or “peasant” styles) are probably the easiest options and can be done without much money. Even if you don’t already have them you can usually find bandannas for a $1 or so and the same for hats. 

I also suggest snoods (sometimes called hairnets, usually crocheted), though they can be a bit pricey. I get mine off Ebay for a few dollars a piece, but you get what you pay for. 

For many styles I’d advise the use of an under-scarf will help keep things in place. I like to use wide fabric headbands as under-scarfs as they are rather inexpensive. Those headbands also make a nice beginner covering or for exercise. They come in various widths and styles. They’re especially good if you’re mostly worried about your crown chakra. 

Oblong scarfs (the kind you usually wear around the neck) are also versatile. You can tie them in a tichel like style (looks a bit different tho), a “pirate”/“gypsy” style, more like a headband, etc. The options are endless.

Hi! i was just wondering what Hellenic hair wrapping was? LIke, i guess, what it is for/beliefs surrounding it/what it looks like (like is there a specific way you are supposed to wrap your hair?)? I tried googling, but couldn't find any answers.

So I have an explanation along with a ton of links! :D

I can only speak as a Hellenic Pagan, so if any other religions want to stop in and say something about why the do it, go for it :)

But basically, it’s devotion, protection, and personal reasons :) I do it to protect myself from miasma, and do it as a devotional act for Hades.

Hair is a very spiritual thing and it holds a lot of power, in my opinion. Protecting it from bad energy, the sun, and just the outside world in general is a pretty good reason to do it. :) 

what it looks like (like is there a specific way you are supposed to wrap your hair?)

There are a ton of different ways to do it! :D You can just lay a veil over your hair, style it in a greek/roman updo, follow traditions from your culture… really there are sooo many ways to do it.

I personally like turban-esque wraps since they’re easy to pass off as fashion to my parents and friends. But I also really enjoy wearing elegant and intricate styles from artwork we find from ancient Hellas ^_^
