I think the American Architecture system is structured very well - from Intern 1 to Architect 3. I really wish we had that system in Sydney. As a graduate (aka being a intern 1 or 2) I increasingly find the directors drop you anywhere from design to structural engineering work here (quite complex work when you straight out of university or college - basically throwing you in the deep end and expecting you to swim out safely) whilst skipping over any sort mentoring. What are your thoughts? :)

I think learning by mentoring is one of the most critical parts of the process. It is something that does not end after graduation and you should continue taking advantage of for life, whether your mentor is senior or junior to you.

Some people think that learning by trial is the best way I must say that there needs to be a balance. You have to let people grow and try new things, but when you don’t provide a protective net underneath it can lead to frustration and paralysis.

In 2008, a watershed was crossed and the world saw the irreversible shift from a global majority of rural dwellers to a new army of urban residents. Mass urbanisation trends predict that the world’s urban population will double in the coming 40 years. The cities of the developing world will account for 95% of that growth. These are the megacities of the BRIC economies, the urban giants of Brazil, Russia, India and China. These people-magnets draw in rural workers with the promise of higher wages and a better quality of life, but the delicate balance between expanding population and limited physical space defines the human condition of these powerhouses.
