A couple scenes from a little gay vampire story I was kicking around a couple years ago! I sometimes do little pencils-only scenes for things and never post them. But I was looking back at these and was like why not? They're cute!

I have a whole story for these two, but just for funsies, something to do every now and then when I need to let loose.

parents will be like "We're good parents! We did our best!" while their child is alone in their room, terrified of footsteps, unable to conceptualize being loved by anyone.

The thing that gets me about Avery and Julius dynamic is the "Avery deserves better" thing. Better from who?

Because, yes, they absolutely do, but nobody in this town is willing to do it.

Stella is "more of an acquaintance than a friend." Tabitha doesn't know their name. The miners dismiss their words as meaningless. The online plant communities are past tense - "life got pretty busy, so we don't talk much anymore." The town is polite but closed. Avery is the perpetual new kid even after three years. People don't even call them by their name!

Yes, Julius is a flawed and seems to undervalue Avery, but he's also the only one who activly engages with them. His care for them is shity, sure, but he is the one who listens in on Avery's conversations and does things for them, we see it in the bench story. Julius' grumbled 'your welcome' into his paper is the most amount of true aknowledgment that they get. He asks Avery for help, something Avery really wants.

Avery wants the sense of being needed, we see it with how they describe their disinterest in succulents as plants, "I need something that reminds me it's a living thing with wants and desires".

Avery craves reciprocity. And Julius does geniuenly care, in his way. Both outcasts, at very different levels, with their own sort of communication.

Which is why Avery protects that relationship so much! Why they're so willing to go to bat for Julius when pressed.

it's not neccesarily that Avery has low standards. Nbody else in town is offering anything.
