OG!Dunk was either a beta or alpha in the story, but when Duncan came in, his biology instantly changed to fit Duncan's secondary gender as an omega. Aegon is confused bc how?? while Egg is Egg.

OG!Duncan was a beta. That was no surprise, really. Dunk doesn't want to be mean, but it's pretty obvious that 'beta' is the designated side-character gender for when the author couldn't be bothered to come up with a special scent. It's not like he's gonna complain. Having to deal with heats and ruts and all the other stuff is just a giant hassle to deal with anyway.
Instead of instantly changing once Dunk comes in, it's actually a process that happens over time. He takes in Egg long before the kid ever presents (usually ppl get their second gender during late puberty, so 16-18), meaning that Dunk is surrounded 24/7 by soft, milky pup scent. Normally, this shouldn't really matter much, unfortunatly this is when two other factors come into play:
A) Targaryens have a lot of wonky biology and subgender shit going on due to being dragon hybrids
and B) Unlike the original whom he replaced, Dunk does actually care for the pup and takes an active role as a caretaker.
So if you combine his desire to care for Egg and the Targaryen plot convenience bs, add in that in the AU betas are a bit more malleable, and then throw it into a blender with being around a pup and you've got yourself a recipe for omega!Dunk. His body just decides to change gender to better care for the new addition to the family. Dunk himself barely even notices the changes in his body until he wakes up in his first heat.
It's a mess, low-key. He's never had a heat or a rut before and doesn't know what to expect. Mating Cycles in my version of the omegaverse aren't automatically smut, though. Most don't even entail any sort of sexual encounter- much less with anyone that isn't the subject's chosen mate or partner. Usually it's just a time for people to live out their instincts and rest. Which for Dunk means that he suddenly has an unusual desire to hole up with his pup Egg and just. Nest. Nest and hug and cuddle and scent and stay safe-safe-safe-safe. He has no idea what's going on. All he knows is that he needs his tiny little boy in his arms and smothered in his scent. Dunk's mewling and cooing down at his squire.He's out of his mind, just head-empty instincts on.
Luckily for him, Egg quite enjoys all the attention his muña is giving him. Especially since his own instincts are preening under the knowledge that he's got an omega caretaker looking out for. Young pups get extremely stressed without having a set caretaker to turn to the same way normal babies do. Only it is much worse for them since they have the omegaverse stuff to add onto it.
This also leads us into the section about OG!Aegon. He is, to no one's surprise, an alpha. A prime specimen of one, even! Tall, large, handsome, smart, charming...the perfect ideal anyone could ask for! Unfortunately, his instincts are incredibly messed up, though. OG!Duncan was always a little jealous of him- perhaps he notices the hints of the boy's future gender -and thus didn't exactly care much for making sure his instincts were fine. Add to that that he never had an adult to look after him as a pup and it just becomes tragic. His ruts are a nightmare of pain. He gets angry and territorial. Doesn't know how to handle his own urges. Has issues with his scent. Something is still fundamentally broken within Aegon from the years he spent being abused, with no one able to truly cure him of that.
It's why it only cuts deeper when he sees the kind of relationship Dunk and Egg have. Especially once he finds out that this version of his old master also used to be a Beta but ended up an omega. Imagine knowing that somewhere out there, another version of you got another version of your tormentor that not only loved him... but loved him so much his body physically changed itself so he could be the best possible caretaker for the boy. All while you yourself still deal with the fallout of your own botched childhood.
Egg gets to grow up with a soft muña that smells like sunflowers and forest and wet earth while you got hard eyes and even harder fists. Egg has an omega mother that builts him big sprawling nests. That scents him while they cuddle in there. His first rut won't be spent somewhere in forest being chained to a tree because Ser Duncan didn't wanna bother. He'll have his in a warm room at the Red Keep, getting to hide in Dunk's side while he talks him through the growing pain and lets him take refuge with him. It's everything he has to go through in a non-omegaverse but worse.
And since we are on the subject of Aegon and mating cycles.....just imagine Dunk's first heat after he arrived. The poor man has always had more intense heats ever since becomming an omega. Usually having Egg with him is more than enough to distract him, but now? Now there are two Eggs, aren't there? A pup and an adult. But the adult is still the same pup in his arms. His pup. His pup that isn't with him. That is alone. That Dunk cannot protect or scent because he's not here with him in his nest. Which is horrid. And bad. And dangerous. So obviously he needs to fix it by bringing his unruly adult pup here. Silly thing thought that just because he's an alpha he doesn't need his Dunk anymore? How mean. He'll be grounded.
Aegon's first experience with parental instincts and care is omega!Dunk bodily picking him up and dragging him into his nest with him lmao. Just plops him down next to Egg before he climbs ontop of both of them, each of his pups on one side as he presses them into the scent glands under his chin, purring up a storm. Egg needs to tell his other version to stfu and not disturb their muña when he's just trying to look after them properly.
