Died on this day: powerful and confrontational documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark (20 March 1940 – 25 May 2015), who captured the lives of societal outsiders (like homeless people, sex workers, mental patients and carnival folk) with unflinching grit and compassion. Mark also occasionally photographed celebrities and public figures – like this portrait of old Hollywood cowboy star Clayton Moore (best remembered for playing the Lone Ranger), photographed at his home in Los Angeles.
