The Year I Entered the Worst Relationship of My Life
And how it took me 9 months to realize it
I have always been a somewhat spontaneous, outgoing girl who is not afraid to try new things. I also have a fairly diverse sexual past. Thus, when I met Kyle, a 28 year old teacher, on an online dating website and he mentioned his pee fetish, I was not phased one bit. In fact, embarrassingly enough, the idea intrigued me. I mean, his questions seemed harmless; “Do you ever pee in the lake?” came first, followed by: “Do you ever pee in the shower?” Since I wanted to find out more, I lied and told him yes. It did not occur to me that Kyle would use his pee fetish to emotionally abuse me for 9 months.
The first date we went on was a convergence of sorts. I had admitted that I was really nervous to meet someone in person off a website since I had never done it before. Thus, in an attempt to be sensitive, Kyle created a remarkably chill atmosphere. He bought a 6-pack, some ice, and we just drank and talked at a picnic table in one of our state parks. I was immediately infatuated with Kyle. We had a lot in common – a love of cars, running, and spicy food. I also learned he was in the process of buying a house which made him that much more appealing. I've always been attracted to older men, but that summer in-between my 2nd and 3rd years of pharmacy school, I had finally come to terms with the 65,000 dollars of student loans I owed and I put anyone who had a "real adult" life on a pedestal. As the date continued and I got tipsy on my 3 beers, I eventually had to “break the seal.” Obviously, Kyle wanted a front row seat. Figuring it was not the weirdest thing in the world and since I had to pee anyways, I lifted my skirt, took off my underwear and let him watch the stream. Kyle was immediately hard. I had told him before we met that I was not going to sleep with him on the first date, that I was looking for more in a relationship and he assured me that he felt the same way - he was a nice guy and wouldn't hurt me. Nevertheless, after I peed in the wild - we were both turned on and Kyle started to finger me. I hate to admit this since Kyle treated me with the least amount of respect possible, but he knew exactly what to do to get me off. Long story short, we had sex in the park on the picnic table. I know what you're thinking. How can she expect to develop a serious relationship by sleeping with the guy the first time she meets him? Yes, I agree, it was a mistake. But at the same time, sometimes you just go with the flow and it honestly felt right at the time. Our date got cut short because Kyle had to go make an offer on a house, but he hugged me goodbye and asked if we could hang out tomorrow. I was on cloud nine. Everything was perfect - the sex was fabulous, he wanted to see me again, and I truly enjoyed talking to him. However, that was the last time the "relationship" would be great. The next day, I told Kyle I could stop by after physical therapy. He said he had already "taken care of himself" and it takes him "a long time to reset." So I offered the option of just hanging out. He was not interested. I should have known. We continued to talk with him mostly bringing up sex and myself trying to steer the conversation away from it. Eventually, about 1.5 weeks after our initial meeting, he ignored me for an extended period of time only to text me on July 4th saying, "Sorry, I've been thinking about it and all I'm interested in is sex." I was blown away. What had happened? What I had done to drive him away? I started to beat myself up. Maybe I wasn't receptive enough to his fetish, maybe I was too clingy, maybe I had offended him at the park.
Why?
Why can’t I be happy for my friend who is experiencing new things? Why do I have to be selfish?
Let’s be honest
You know how you always think that you aren’t going to be “that girl?” Come on, everyone does it. No one wants to be seen as the crying girl or the one who just can’t cut it. That is exactly what I have continued to tell myself for the last 9 months.
“Why doesn’t he like me?”
“I’m not depressed.”
“You can do better, but then why do I like him?”
“I’m not eating to make up for what I can’t have.”
How can the pharmacy student from a wealthy city in Michigan be depressed? To an outsider, it would seem I have nothing to be upset about. I go to an amazing University, I have lots of friends, my family is supportive and once I graduate, I’ll have good job and salary prospects.
It’s not uncommon when growing up in an affluent area like mine to be ashamed of depression. I grew up thinking that I shouldn’t need medication - I can tough it out. In fact, although my parents are practicing pharmacists, they believed pretty much any problem could be fixed with a quick dose of ibuprofen.
After class one day, a friend texted me and asked if something was wrong because I looked bummed. That was the final straw for me. I honestly had no reason to be upset. But the depression was affecting me enough where someone else noticed. So I sought help. Rachel used to the “fun” one. Whenever I went out, I was always relied on to liven up the party and lately I never wanted to go out. I had become inconsolably irritable, picking fights for no reason. Even more concerning, I was withdrawn and it was hard for me to engage in what was happening around me. The worst part was when I had no strength to carry on a conversation with one of my best friends and I didn’t care!
I saw an MD about it and although my depression score was a “6″ on paper, Dr. M believed my diagnosis was more severe than I indicated after talking to me. I probably rated my depression lower than it should have been because I was originally so ashamed. Since I told her up front that I was a pharmacy student, she asked me what drug I wanted to try. Lately, first line for mild to moderate depression is Bupropion, but I also wanted it because it caused appetite depression. Mistake - don’t take a drug for its side effects. You will be disappointed when you’re in the small percent of people who don’t experience weight loss.
I felt immediately better within 2 weeks of taking Bupropion. This is the honeymoon phase. And then everything went to shit again. My emotional outbreaks spiked to a new level and I was keeping it all contained. I am so good at putting on a face for everyone and coping.
However, my doctor just increased my Bupropion dose and I honestly feel better again - way more like my old self. My doctor said she was going to get “fun” Rachel back and I trust her. But I think the biggest lesson I learned from all of this is the original reason I became so messed up in the first place - Kyle.
9 months ago, I entered what I now see as an emotionally abusive relationship. It started off harmless, a nice date drinking beer in a park, but eventually I was pulled into his sick world. He was only interested in sex. And it wasn’t normal sex. He had a “pee” fetish. I let him watch me pee, because hey, he liked it, and I wanted to impress him. And honestly, whatever - it was just peeing right? But it got worse. I let Kyle watch me wet my pants. He wanted to pee on me - No problem. He wanted me to drink his pee? Get me a glass! You want me to come over at 1:30 AM? Hell yes! I literally did whatever he wanted and I still got orgasms, but I never got to call the shots. It was always on his time. And I never got to spend the night. I always had to drive home at 3 AM, even if we had drank a couple beers. Kyle put me in danger. We never used condoms and thankfully I never got pregnant, but he didn’t even seem to care about the consequences. He would ignore me for weeks at a time and then just expect me to fine when he texted me. Kyle also fucked other women even though I asked him not to. I knew we weren’t dating, but that grossed me out. As a 23 year old having sex with a 28 year old with his own house, 4 year degree, and full time job - I expected a bit of maturity. He is the most immature man I’ve ever met. He doesn’t know how to treat women with the respect they deserve and when I called him out on it, he told me we were never hanging out again only to text me 5 weeks later because he was horny.
Obviously, Kyle had some sort of hold on me that I will never understand, but I finally realized that I can’t validate myself by how many times he wants to have sex with me. The sex was catered to him first of all. And he isn’t mature enough to interact in normal situations. Eventually, it will catch up to him. I know that. And here I am, stronger than I was before because I will NEVER let anyone emotionally slap me around like that. I know what I need now and it’s someone who doesn’t avoid eye contact when you run into each in Starbucks, like what happened today.
This is just a rant to anyone out there who has ever struggled with mild depression, boy or relationship problems, and abuse. Sometimes you don’t even realize it’s happening. But you have to take a step back to get it. Listen to your friends. I got a tattoo “Sei Gesund,” meaning be healthy in German to remind myself that I never want to feel like that again and I will take all the appropriate steps to be “fun” Rachel once more.
Custody of the Empire
"He who loves his body more than dominion over the empire can be given custody of the empire."
-Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
This quote perplexes the shit out of me. Mostly because in my eyes, I am the empire. If you want me and my empire, you have to work for it. And I never realized how true that was until I met Kyle. Kyle does not love the empire more than he loves his body. But yet I gave him dominion over it anyway. I let him control me. I let him call me up at 1 in the morning, go to his place, do kinky things, and then I fucking drove home at 3 in the fucking morning. In what kind of effed up situation does a fuck buddy make you drive home? You should at least be given the benefit of the doubt and allowed to sleep over. You made me so unhealthy towards my own empire Kyle. I betrayed loving my own body and for that - I will never forgive you.
Last Semester of "Didactic Learning" Ever! (for now)
So, today began my 12th semester at the University of Michigan. Crazy how fast time flies by actually. It really seems like yesterday that I was doing freshman orientation and figuring out how to cross the bridge to Couzens Hall. But I am beyond excited to have no more exams/tests after this semester. I still have one whole year before I finish pharmacy school, but it's all clinical rotations so I'll be doing real shit! Oh my gosh. It's all starting to become real. This is why I feel like I'm waiting for my life to begin sometimes. College is temporary. Even grad school. It's even more temporary when you will have been in the same place for 7 years.
""You know you love him if you put him in your will. But who will save your souls if you won’t save your own?""
Every once in a while I feel like lyrics speak to my life in this exact moment.
The Year I Entered the Worst Relationship of My Life
I'm just gonna jump into this and hopefully you all can follow along. More than 6 months ago, I met a man named Kyle from an online dating website. We chatted for a long time over text learning about each other. We both enjoy spicy food, going up north in the summer, and ironically we both worked at 630 AM that summer. He was 28. I was 23. He was trying to buy a house and I was flat broke, owing 50,000 dollars in student loans to go to pharmacy school, but uselessly trying to save up for a porsche that I'm still convinced I can buy once I graduate.
Eventually, the texts entered a more personal subject one night, when I mentioned that I liked spicy food because who wouldn't want everything in life to be hot? You get where this is going? In an instant, our text conversations revolved around sex. But I didn't care. I'm Rachel. I am an expert on sexting. Ask anyone who knows me. You can hand your phone over to me and I can make renovating a house sound sexy. But, I was also trying to find a relationship that would last at this point in my life. I had gotten over the one night stand phase in my life and decided to give getting to know people a try. So, his incessant sexting and need to see me at 11 PM started to give me pause. I called his bluff and told him I wasn't comfortable with that and he straight up said he wasn't only looking for sex, that's just the way the conversation happened to be heading. He promised me he was a nice guy and he wouldn't hurt me.
Boy. That was the biggest pot of bullshit I have EVER HEARD because for the last 6 months, all I can talk about is Kyle and how big of an ass he is, but how I am hopelessly addicted. I should have stopped when I was ahead.
But my new year's resolution was to be done with him. And so far I've gone two weeks without speaking to him or seeing him. (unless you count anonymously signing his number up to receive cat facts daily). That's my own form of revenge.
More to follow on what happened in those last 6 months.
