Okay that’s why I’m 100% sure that going to Heaven was Aziraphale’s choice and he just wanted to do the right thing !!
(No coffee theory)
1. Metatron asks Nina if someone ever asked for death instead of coffee and she says no obviously why would you ask for death
2. For Metatron “Give me coffee or give me death” literally means you either accept coffee or you die
3. So when he’s offering Aziraphale coffee he’s testing if he’s gonna accept it or if he’s gonna die (being erased by the book of life), foreshadowing to the offer he’s gonna make that’s why he says “are you going to take it” if Az declines the coffee, the stroll, the talk, the offer he’s gonna die (“give me coffee or give me death”)
4. If there was something in the coffee that could control Aziraphale’s mind he wouldn’t say that he didn’t want to go back to Heaven the first time he heard the offer
5. When he comes back to Crowley he’s all excited because he always saw Crowley’s good side, how he always helped people and Aziraphale in the first place and he saw how happy was Crowley creating stars. He just thought that Heaven was the perfect place for being together. Also he wants to change things up there, he wants to protect Crowley and humanity and by being a supreme Archangel he can do that
6. He’s ready to abandon the bookshop (one of his dearest thing) for Crowley and when he says “nothing lasts forever” it’s just because he’s trying to be strong for the both of them, he’s saying that in hope for Crowley to change his mind
7. After the kiss, he’s heartbroken and in pain because he knows that there’s nothing more to do, that he lost Crowley. At that point when Metatron comes back he’s worried about the future of the bookshop but once again he tries to be strong
8. Aziraphale knows that being in Heaven is the only way to make sure that Crowley is safe, that neither Hell or Heaven gonna pay him attention and he’s more sure of his choice once he hears about the second coming. He has the opportunity to be in charge of everything and stop things if he wants
So no Aziraphale isn’t manipulated by Metatron, he knows what he’s doing and he prefers to suffer and reject spending eternity with Crowley if it means that his demon is gonna be safe…
