Itzy's new hiding spot, the ready-to-be-thrown green basket in the garage. Preferably with the lights turned on and being left alone for hours on end. "Ignore the cat" is a common phrase said around Itzy when she seems to be enjoying herself. If seen and touched, she must leave and hide away for a while.
Only one is an established character.
5. Trumpeter Swan
A second bird in a row and the opposite color, the migratory Trumpeter Swan (not to be confused with the tundra swan). As the last piece in the series I found some color aspects a bit challenging. Up to this point I was able to add red in good portion that wouldn't detract from the piece.
While looking for references for another illustration I found the halter sometimes used for reindeer. After some thought, they work perfectly for my created species with some delicate snouts. An exercise in getting a better understanding in the anatomy I want for the species and a small re-design of these three.
4. American Crow
The American crow is an intelligent and fascinating bird. Able to recognize faces and remember any danger that they have come across. The amount of black in this piece gave me trouble for a moment. Different to the rattlesnake as the pattern disrupted the amount of black needed. With a crow you can't get away from it.
There's the idea of dedicating 100,000 hours for a skill. I can't say that I have come anywhere near that but improvement is improvement. Stumbled across an old drawing while transferring files from 2015. Actually having an understanding of how to use references and anatomy has payed off.
3. Plains Bison
Back again with another black and white illustration. In North America there are two types of bison, showcased here is the plains bison.
Wildlife photography is something I truly enjoy to look at and examine. The animal, environment, and the effort it takes to get a good photo. Unfortunately I have never had luck finding a print in my budget of some of the lesser cats. So made my own in and made a canvas print.
2. Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
The next done in the series of Wild America 30 is the Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake. This illustration was partly inspired by tearing up an old patio to replace with a garden bed. It is interesting and challenging for me to differentiate pattern with no color to use.
Simply coming off of a art block and wanted to draw something a little softer.
N. American Black Bear
As a way to get past both art block and lack of inspiration I created myself a list of native North American animals to illustrate in a monochrome like style. This is a no pressure challenge for myself in drawing animals I never do and in a restrictive palette. With 30 creatures to have a random pick from the north American black bear was the first to get done.
A Display
I recently came across the tancho pattern in bettas and they have become my new dream fish. Based on patterns I saw on three different fish, I made them into little betta drakes. A bit of a stream of conscience drawing, so this is more how I often plan out a polished piece. As it’s a quicker style there are a number of drawings like this sitting on my computer.
Sitting Crow
A sort of blind remake of a drawing I did years ago that I cannot find anymore. Crow here is a character I have had for a while that I made after a dream I had. In the world Crow belongs to, harvest/blood moons make unnatural/other worldly creatures appear more. This drawing was more for fun than polish.
Work-in-Progress Dappled This is a work-in-progress piece I am currently working on. With how I plan on working this piece, I am unsure when I will have it finished. It will be a more detailed piece for sure.
The Wanderer
“Inhabiting the same world as the Hare and Water Bull, the Wanderer is their pseudo aimless leader. While the perspective does not show this, the Wanderer is taller than the tree canopy and has an ability to regrow dead foliage.”
This illustration is the second version of a finished piece as the first I had gotten rid of too much contrast.
The Water Bull
“A similar entity to the Hare, the Water Bull is a larger than life spirit that inhabits a chain of islands. Especially residing in the cool mountain fed lakes.”
First finished illustration I have done since college has ended for me. My last course took a lot out of me creatively and motivation to do much art for myself. It feels good to finish this and to see more of the world I am slowly creating for stories.
The Hare
Having fun creating and exploring some colors in shades that I don’t often use. There was going to be a second image to go along but felt it was unnecessary after I finished the first.
