Interview
A short interview with The Modern Wonder. Transcript below or follow the link. Introducing Zachary Russell! He does instrumental Christmas music. His most popular release has been 2013's EP titled Hello Xmas. This year's release is titled The Christmas Eve Takeoff and is meant to be an ambient soundtrack to Santa's trip around the world. Checkout his website helloxmas.com and also his interview below. TMW: Where are you from? Z: Columbus, OH TMW: Why a Christmas album? Favorite holiday? Z: When I made the decision to start a solo project I knew it had to be something appealing due to my music being instrumental. Christmas was always a fun time of year growing up and it just made sense. I've found there are endless possibilities within the Christmas theme and every release I make takes a different route. TMW: Name 3 artists that inspire your music or sound? Z:Pinpointing exact inspirations is difficult but I have always navigated towards the basics. The punk rock genre as a whole has played a big part in the music I make. Even when it doesn't sound like it. TMW: How long have you been doing music for, what got you started? Z:All of my life - the past 30+ years. I grew up in a musical family. TMW: What should listeners expect when they hear your album on the 27th? Z:This year's release is meant to be a fun one. I tried to create an ambient soundtrack to Santa's sleigh ride. Each song sets the mood for a different chapter in the trip. Hopefully people with get a kick out of it. The theme is nostalgic and I think it's sets the proper mood. TMW: Name a venue that you dream to sell out one day, and why? Z:. This Christmas project has been alive for three years but no shows yet. Maybe in the future but I'd have to build a band first. If that becomes a reality I wouldn't really care which venue. I currently play drums in another band that fulfills the live show aspect of being a musician. We've traveled the region and such so there's no desire for me to take this project to the stage yet. TMW: What are your top five favorite songs on your playlist right now? Z:At this very moment... in random order: Reubens Accomplice - No Motion, Vacationer - Paradise Waiting, Augustana - Just Stay Here Tonight, Thrice - Night Diving, Motion City Soundtrack - I Can Feel You TMW: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? Z:My goal is to release new music every Christmas season so in another five years I should have eight albums available. Let's hope TMW: Any other new projects coming up anytime soon? Z:. In 2016 I plan to follow up my 2013 release titled Hello Xmas. It featured a handful of 90-second punk rock versions of old Christmas classics. It's definitely been my most popular release and I've always had intentions of making a volume two. If all goes well, Hello Xmas II should be available November 2016. Maybe even some new merch (shirts, etc) as well. TMW: Where can people listen to some of your music or learn more about you? Z:Everything is at helloxmas.com. From there you can find updates via social media, music, merch, etc. Select releases are available on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, etc. as well.
