things about lafayette that you probably didnt actually know

-his full name was marie-joseph paul yves roch gilbert du motier de lafayette -he was basically raised by his grandmother bc his mom was too sad abt his dads death to raise him and went off to paris -orphaned at 12 -was arranged to marry Adrienne de Noaillles but was super in love with her anyways so its all good -RLLY didnt want to get placed in versailles and purposely insulted the Comte de Provence so theyd stop talking abt placing him there -he wasnt raised in the court so he couldnt dance and he never got the hang of it and one time marie antionette and the whole court laughed at him -once spent an entire night trying to fight hid friend bc he was convinced they were trying to steal his gf (they werent) -was rlly excitable and passionate and was bullied for it when he was young and so he became rlly shy and people thought he was cold and unfeeling -fell in love with america the very first time someone mentioned it -went DIRECTLY against the kings orders to travel to america and bought his own ship bc he was super rich anyways -dressed up as a pregnant woman so he wouldnt get caught -apparently he wasnt greeted very nicely but he still wrote about how kind and wonderful everything and everyone in america was hes so pure he loved everything so much -his friends wrote about how awful the trip to america was but how his sunshiny attitude made it better -offered to fight for free for america he didnt care he was super rich anyways he just wanted to help -learned english within a year -loved america so much even after the war he came back and he wanted to help politically but americans wouldnt really let him because he was a foreigner -he also loved france a lot and john adams was an asshole about it and kept accusing him of having questionable intentions and laf apologized like a thousand times and kept trying to say that he had no bad intentions and he offered to deliver letters for him and adams was just still an asshole and lafayette was rlly hurt by it -he loved george washington a lot so he had a portrait of him in his house and also he named his only son georges washington de lafayette its so cute -once he napped underneath the same cloak as gwash while they were talking crap about charles lee -also one time spent 10 days at gwashs estate and only left once during that whole time -he was a member of the french abolitionist group Societe des amis des Nois -he fought for the freedom of a slave that wasnt his for like two years -he wanted to take in slaves on an island with gwash and educate them and let them get work and be good citizens but gwash decided nah so laf did it himself -respected native americans a lot and even through the language barrier they could tell how sincere he was so one of the families adopted him and named him Kayewla after one of their warriors and no one ever mentions this but its so neat and american leadership always went to lafayette for advice counsel and assistance when it came to anything having to do with native americans -he was super interested in science and joined the republic of letters -he was definitely not fine during the french revolution and he had to run to austria to escape but he got caught and was imprisoned for nine years until Buonaparte and Washington freed him -during those nine years hamilton and washington took care of his son -ok u prolly do know this one but hes literally buried under american soil his kids shipped soil from bunker hill to france and hes buried under that soil even though his grave is in france

July 12, 1804

Alexander Hamilton was in a duel with Aaron Burr on July 11, 1804 and passed away the next day from the injury inflicted by Burr. 

This was the the second last letter he wrote to Elizabeth 202 years ago on the 4th of July. Only 8 days before he passed. 

“To Elizabeth Hamilton

[New York, July 4, 1804]

This letter, my very dear Eliza, will not be delivered to you, unless I shall first have terminated my earthly career; to begin, as I humbly hope from redeeming grace and divine mercy, a happy immortality.

If it had been possible for me to have avoided the interview, my love for you and my precious children would have been alone a decisive motive. But it was not possible, without sacrifices which would have rendered me unworthy of your esteem. I need not tell you of the pangs I feel, from the idea of quitting you and exposing you to the anguish which I know you would feel. Nor could I dwell on the topic lest it should unman me.

The consolations of Religion, my beloved, can alone support you; and these you have a right to enjoy. Fly to the bosom of your God and be comforted. With my last idea; I shall cherish the sweet hope of meeting you in a better world.

Adieu best of wives and best of Women. Embrace all my darling Children for me.

What really struck me was how he already felt that he was going to die, since he mentioned it in the letter. But another thing was that he hoped to meet her in the future as reincarnated. When I read this “best of wives and best of Women” just made me start crying because Lin literally made this letter a song, he took everything he could out of it and made a hella hit song. 

Alexander’s second letter was written the night before his duel against Burr which is where Lin could have based around the time period of the first letter/second letter to be written during that song.
