Bloggers: It’s Time to Clean Your Pinterest Account
Cleaning your Pinterest Account is something you need to do in order to get your boards, pins and profile to rank high on Pinterest’s search engine and make sure they’re visible to your target audience.
And by “cleaning” I mean deleting all the pins that are sitting in your boards with just a few or absolutely no repins or likes, specially the ones that are repinned from other sources.
Spring time means time for renewal so it’s time for a good cleaning and renewal of your blog’s Pinterest presence.
But why exactly do you need to delete pins that have just a few or no repins?
Many people that are used to other social networks think that Pinterest works the same way: the more you pin and repin like crazy the more people will find your content and follow you.
This is simply not true with Pinterest nowadays.
Whilst this was indeed true in the beginning of Pinterest 6 years ago, currently there’s something called Smart Feed that basically values quality accounts.
And quality accounts are not the ones that pin and repin everything but the ones that only pin and repin quality content and have pins sitting in their accounts that have lots of repins and likes.
This is how Pinterest ranks your account and will show you more to people that are searching for your products, services and topics.
This is actually very similar to how Google ranks websites for their organic search: quality of content on a website is a major thing in SEO nowadays.
So if you have pins in your boards that have a few or no repins you’re basically affecting your Pinterest ranking in a negative way (and your Google ranking too for that matter).
Time to ged rid of them and keep the pins that have a high number of repins.
If your account is filled with content with only high repin numbers, Pinterest views your account as someone who ranks high in their guidelines and will also place your original pins (from your website) in a higher ranking score, thus sharing your content more often to your followers as well as people who aren’t already following you.
How to easily delete those pins?
You can just go to each and every pin with low repins and manually edit and delete them, but there’s an easiest way to delete pins that is not time-consuming and tedious like that one.
The easiest way to delete your pins with low repins is to use a feature called “Move Pins”.
To find it, click on the board you want to clean up and at the top below the search bar you’ll find this feature:
Click on it and you’ll now be able to move, copy or delete pins. We’re focusing on deleting pins in this article but this is also a great way to move or copy pins into other boards.
So now you can go through your board and select every pin that has zero or just a few repins.
My advice to you is to delete a maximum of 50 pins in one go/day.
Pinterest has an interesting system to combat spam and if you delete too much too soon it might flag your account for unusual behaviour and you might end up on “Pinterest jail” or have your account shut down. So, be gentle about it.
You can do one session of deleting pins per day or at least 3-4 sessions per week.
This cleaning will also give you a clear view of which boards have more repins. Although you have access to that information through Pinterest Analytics, is also good to see it this way to give you a bit more awareness.
Knowing this information will help you understand the types of content your followers are interested in sharing and will help you find more great similar content to pin into these boards.
This is of course a strategy that should be present all year round, but if you’re cleaning and deleting pins and finding yourself in the end with boards with just a few pins, it’s time to find new great content!
