I've been thinking about what to do for this Pride Month for a couple of days now. I could not stay silent, but truthfully, I felt I had nothing to say. Or maybe I felt I could not say something. It's so easy in these times to fall prey to despair, to become tired and numb and unresponsive to wave after wave of heartbreak and terror, whether that be from an ongoing unstoppable virus or the murder of yet another Black person. And so, if you cannot find the energy to speak or to react, that is okay. I will not blame you, and I hope no one else will either.
But if you can do something, please do. There are people out there who do need help. Local Black-owned businesses that have been hard-hit twice now. Bail funds in cities that have not yet been fully funded. First-time protestors who don't know what to expect. Every little bit helps.
I don't have much of a platform here, but I'll be using this Thirty Days to try to cobble together some resources for people - either people or organizations in need, or information for others who want to help, or simply an article telling us what's going on. If it reaches one person that it helps - even if it reaches no one at all - it will be a testament that I was not silent at this time. And of course I'll still be posting music - even in times like these, especially in times like these, we could all do with a little respite.
They keep telling us that these are unprecedented times. These times are in fact very precedented - they have happened before, and, unfortunately, they will likely happen again. Don't give up.
