it was hard to remember a time when the two of them weren’t at each other’s throats; when their nights would be filled with joy and laughter, poking fun at each other as the nights went on before they’d inevitably roll between the sheets. and then she got pregnant, which was mistake number one, but mistake number two was falling for the man himself in the end. how stupid of a decision that was. how uncalculated.
“i’m the mother of your child, dakota. not one of your side pieces. you make time.” she said coldly, nose scrunching slightly as she took in his appearance once again.
yael bit the inside of her cheek, attempting to prevent herself from completely bursting at the seams despite how much her insides were practically screaming for her to unload on him to her fullest potential. “i’m not sure how much more ‘human’ i can get, dakota. please explain it to me; i’d love to know,” her voice dripped with sarcasm, rolling her eyes annoyedly.
she glanced over to the banner in question, lips pressing in a tight line. “i won’t work with you? do you know how many times i’ve had to cancel my own plans, call up a sitter, just because you decided last minute that you couldn’t take her? for fuck’s sake, dakota, don’t act like i’m the bad guy here.” yael shook her head. “you’re welcome to come to my apartment to spend time with her, but i’m not letting you take her outside of the hours that we agreed to. unlike you, i can’t exactly switch my schedule around to my leisure.”
“oh, fuck off,” dakota’s hostility slipped at her accusation... side pieces. please, he’d made such a damn effort to be loyal the whole time they were dating. little difference that made, he now realized. part of him wished he’d cheated on her, since apparently it was just going to be accused of him either way.
it took all his power to stay calm while she spoke, hoping that if he just kept his mouth shut, head down, behaved.... then maybe, just maybe, she’d actually give him his way for once. of course that was a fairy tale, and kota couldn’t even feel surprised when she came back with a definite no to his request.
there she went again - taking things from him. restricting his happiness. dakota pushed the heels of his hands into his eyes before meeting her gaze again. “yael, c’mon, you can’t be serious. just let me have her, during the week, on my day off.”
forcing himself to swallow a painful bite of pride and meet her eyes, dakota gritted his teeth about the next word he was about to say. “please,” he finally added, though it damn near pained him, physically, to do so.
