A visit to one of the few luxurious skybars in Bangkok is a must while visiting the city!
Before catching my flight out of Bangkok later that night, my cousin and I got dolled up and headed over to Red Sky Bar for a evening drink and some great views!
Just getting all the way up the Red Sky Bar was an experience. We took two elevators and climbed two small flights of stairs before we were all the way at the top on the 55th floor!
The bar at night was an amazing sight, with neon lights lining the stairs and guiding your way. We sat right on the edge where we could see all of Bangkok city below us as we sipped our mixed drinks!
In addition to the obvious necessities like toiletries and clothing, here are my essentials - what are yours?
Comfortable Shoes
The easiest way to ruin your trip? Aching feet and/or blisters (trust me, I know). Unless youāre traveling in luxury, you can assume that anywhere you go you will have to spend a large portion of your day on your feet. Bringing the appropriate footwear to ensure you remain comfortable from sun up to sun down is a must so you can get the most out of your trip!
Backpack
I like to bring just a backpack as a carry-on whenever I can because once you check your bags in you are FREE! No more pushing and pulling luggage around. A backpack is also big enough to carry all your essential items and small enough to fit under your seat so you donāt have to fight for overhead bin space. Even better, when you get to your destination and start exploring the new city youāre in, you can do it hands-free... and if you buy things throughout the day you can just stuff them into your backpack. Win-win!
Music
No matter where you go, there will be moments where youāll have some downtime. Airplane, bus, subway, car, taxi, train... perfect places to listen to some music while taking in your surroundings! I also find that when Iām traveling alone, having headphones in and listening to my favorite tunes as I walk around makes me feel a little less lonely, but Iām introverted like that :)
Camera
This goes without saying, but I figured Iād throw it in anyways because I love documenting the places Iāve been. Nowadays I mostly use my smartphone to snap some pictures but I used to carry a camera around before the days of the iPhone. Most people like to pose and take pictures but if you follow me on Instagram youāll barely see pictures of me in them - I prefer to capture organic moments and scenery so I can fully enjoy the moment.
Extra Battery Pack for your Smartphone
We rely so heavily on our phones now that I would hate to run out of battery at home let alone abroad. Thatās why an external battery pack is an essential item to carry around when traveling. Gotta make sure you can still navigate and contact people especially in case of an emergency! As a side note, I strongly suggest switching to T-Mobile if you travel a lot. Your data is throttled but at least there are no roaming charges and texting to US numbers is free. Just make sure you check which countries are excluded but there arenāt many that are.
Money
Obviously you need money with you when you travel, but I have a couple of thoughts that go with this. The first is to make sure you have a credit card that doesnāt have any foreign transaction fees. Most major cities take credit cards nowadays and it reduces the burden of bringing cash with you. That being said, you still need to bring cash! Some people Iāve talked to over the years think itās okay to not have cash when you travel and itās always blown my mind. Your card could get denied, you might not be able to find an ATM, or your card might not even work at the ATM! I also strongly recommend having some of the local currency with you before you arrive, most banks and airports have currency exchanges. And lastly, keep some USD with you in case of emergencies!
Luggage Locks
Whenever I check my bags I always make sure that I have a TSA-approved lock on them. It prevents theft and provides me with general peace of mind. Unfortunately people rummage around your checked luggage a lot both at home and abroad and if youāre not careful you could become a victim. Better safe than sorry! I also like to lock my bags when I leave them at the hotel just in case, and if youāre staying at hostels some places have a basket you can lock under your bed!
